Critical Mass

Sorry this has taken so long to get to and is so short. Life has been more than a bit crazy for me the last few months. I do apologize for the delay.

***

Just one more moment

That’s all that’s needed

Lucius carried a kicking and screaming Hermione to the library. He surmised it would be the one place she was likely to do the least damage because she loved the books almost as much as he did. One particular movement very nearly jerked her from his grasp. He had to admit she was amazingly strong for a woman. He strode through the library doors and sealed them shut with a wave of his hand. He’d lock her in here until time for the ceremony if he needed to but she was not going to the damn grave today. Not today. Not when he wanted to throw himself onto the ground above where Narcissa’s body was and not move until morning. If he couldn’t give into selfish misery today neither could she.

“Put me down this instant !” she screamed in his ear.

He dropped her none too gently to the floor and stood over her glaring for a full minute. She glared back before standing and then, not bothering with a wand, slugged him in the jaw. He staggered back for a moment before getting his balance, swearing the whole time. She was almost instantly at the door trying to escape.

“It won’t open until I release it so you’re wasting your time,” he grumbled.

She whirled around to face him. “Let me out of here, Lucius, or I swear I will file kidnapping charges the moment I’m released.”

“Which will garner you nothing as you and I both well know,” he said, prodding at the swelling and tender spot just to the left side of his mouth.

She glared at him. “You have no right to keep me in here, Lucius. I’m an adult and I can do as I please.”

“Of course you can. But not when it disrupts this household and upsets your daughter to the point she’s in tears on an almost nightly basis due to worry about you,” Lucius said. “He is dead, Hermione. No amount of sobbing by his grave side or wallowing in self pity will ever change that. Your daughter is alive. If you think you have nothing left to go on for then live for her but do not try to will yourself out of existence simply because he’s gone.”

He sighed and shoved his hands through his hair in frustration. “Hermione, I know how you feel. However . . .”

Like wounded soldiers

In need of healing

“You can’t begin to imagine how I feel, Lucius,” she snapped and instantly realized what she’d said and whom she’d said it to.

He advanced on her menacingly, eyes flashing in a way that made him look particularly dangerous. “Don’t I? Do you think that I don’t wish she was here today, for our only grandchild’s wedding? Do you believe it doesn’t destroy me to go to sleep alone every night? Or when I wake up with my arms empty? Do you surmise that it didn’t break my heart to watch Draco become a husband and father without her? Do you truly conclude I don’t want her here with every triumph and tragedy in my life? Do you think I wouldn’t give up every last knut I own just to have her back with me?” he snarled, turning his back on her to gain some control of himself. The world famous Malfoy ice seemed to have melted and he needed a moment to calm down.

Time to be honest

This time I’m pleading.

Please don’t dwell on it

Cause I didn’t mean it

Hermione was so shocked at seeing him lose most of the restraint he usually had she couldn’t move for a few moments. His response really shouldn’t have surprised her. She knew he missed Narcissa every day, even after so long and he’d still tried to help her through her own grief. She paused for a little while longer before walking over to him and putting her arms around his waist, leaning her cheek against his back. She felt him stiffen and his back go ramrod straight but he didn’t move to shake her off.

“I apologize, Lucius,” she said. “I had no right to say you didn’t know how I felt. I know you do. I know how much you miss her after all these years. It’s just . . .”

He sighed and turned around, putting his arms around her as well. “It’s called grieving, Hermione. The deeper the love, the more keenly the loss is felt. You’re strong and I have confidence in you. That does not mean I don’t still consider you an obnoxious brat,” he said.

“Of course not,” she said, smiling faintly.

“That’s a bit better. We’ll get through the day together.”
