Chapter Three

Hermione spent two more days in isolation before she went back to the Gryffindor dorms. She was walking into the common room when she saw Ron cuddling up with a sixth year girl that she didn’t know all that well. Rolling her eyes, she went over to the bedroom that she shared with two other girls that had decided to return to school after the war had ended the year before.

She honestly didn’t know why Ron even bothered to come back to school. Hermione also wondered if he had come back simply to find a girl to marry so he would have someone to take care of him like his mother, she thought as she went about gathering together her books so that she could get over to the library.

Hermione was walking out of her rooms with her shrunken books when she saw Ron kneeling down on one knee in front of the girl that she had seen him with before. She stopped walking and just watched. But instead of the girl accepting, she jumped up and ran away, clearly upset that he had asked at all.

“What just happened?” Ron asked, puzzled as if just waking from a dream.

“I think you just asked Salt…”

“Pepper…”

“…to marry you,” she told him. “I really don’t know as I missed most of it. I’ve catching up to do in my studies. I’ll see you later.” Hermione turned and left, wondering if Ron was thinking clearly when he opened his mouth to ask a girl he only had a keen knowledge of her body to marry him.

Once to the library, try as she might she couldn’t get any studying done at all. If it wasn’t the images that she picked up from the things she touched, it was the chattering of the people around her. It was enough to make her scream. So when everything went quiet at once, her head popped up and she saw that she was in the library alone. Frowning she wondered what happened to the other students or even to Madam Pince.

If she had exited the library, she would have seen them there in the hallway. They were getting up slowly, rubbing the various body parts that they had landed on rather hard when they had vanished from the library and were dumped unceremoniously into the hall. When Madam Pince tried to get in, the doors wouldn’t open. She was, in essence, locked out of her own library.

So it was a furious librarian that went over to Snape’s office and demanded that he find out immediately what had happened. He asked if anyone was still in the book depository to which she answered the one name he had hoped she wouldn’t.

“Miss Granger,” she said tightly. “She was the only one not thrown out and I would like to know why.”

“As would I,” he murmured. “And I will find out shortly. Please in the meantime, calm down. I seriously doubt this was done on purpose.”

“Miss Granger.” It was the voice of the Headmaster, but he wasn’t there in the room with her. “You have done something that has your fellow students standing in my hallway and Madam Pince as mad as a hornet.” Hermione was blushing by the time he went on. “Miss Granger, you must come over to my offices immediately, if only to restore the calm.”

Hermione left to her own rooms as quickly as possible, hoping that would be enough to allow the chaos to end.

It wasn’t. Soon all the Gryffindors were outside of the portrait asking the Fat Lady what had happened. She had no answer, but was able to get the Headmaster over to clear up the mess. He found Hermione hiding in her bedroom, looking scared. It was with a sigh that he went over to her.

“Miss Granger, you did it again,” he told her. “It would seem that you want to be alone and you are magically evacuating those near you in order to get it done. This isn’t acceptable. But seeing as you aren’t doing it on purpose, what am I to do?”

“I don’t know,” she whispered. “I-I wish I could explain it.”

“As do I,” he replied. “But as that can’t be, I’m only left with one option. Bring in a person that just might know what we are dealing with and just how to control your new powers.”

“Who is that, sir?” she inquired quietly.

“It’s best that I speak to him first,” he replied, with a sardonic tone. “There’s no telling what this man will say.”

“Let me see if I understand you correctly,” the man said. “You are coming to me for help?”

“What is so unusual about that?” Severus asked him.

“It’s just that I thought I would be the last person in the universe that you, or anyone else for that matter, would come to for any sort of assistance whatsoever.” The wizard leaned back in his chair smiling to himself. “I best cherish this while I may before I tell you no.”

“It’s Hermione Granger.” This had the man sitting up straighter. “She’s in need of magical training to be able to control her new magical powers.”

“Really?” he whispered. “What exactly has happened so far?”

Severus told him all from the beginning. The knowing things by touch, the shield, and now the moving people magically from one location to another. When he finished, he took a deep drink of fire whiskey and muttered, “I’m at my wits end. She needs help, but I have a school to run and students that from the looks of things need protecting from her powers.” He stood up, watching the other man intently. “If I have to, I’ll use the life debt you owe me.”

He held up his hand and replied, “There’s no need to go that far.”

“So you’ll do it?” he asked, when he didn’t answer Snape pressed, “Malfoy…”

“I’ll do it,” he sneered at him. “But on my terms, in my way, is that understood?”

“Fine,” he replied, stepping back. “But remember, I am expecting her to be safe here as she would be at Hogwarts.”

“Is that a threat?”

“No, Lucius, it’s a promise of pain untold if she isn’t kept as safe as a babe in arms.”

The regal blond wizard let out a bark of laughter, but when he saw that his friend was deadly earnest with his threat, he roped in the humor and said, “She’ll be safe. You have my word.”
