Chapter 3 21.3
Hermione took a seat next to Ron and Harry in the meeting room. The Order had called an emergency meeting. Everyone sat as Albus Dumbledore spoke privately with Matt Conners, one of their field scouts.
Hermione looked around the room. Several of her former professors sat whispering with each other, possibly questioning why they were there. Professor McGonnagal spoke with Madame Pomfrey.
She observed the black clad professor sitting alone. Professor Snape narrowed his eyes at the pair at the front of the room. ‘What was he thinking?’ Hermione thought.
Conners took a seat as Professor Dumbledore cleared his throat. The room fell silent. Hermione watched Professor Snape as he still stared at the scout that was earlier speaking with the silver haired professor.
Hermione sat tuning out the headmaster of Hogwarts as he spoke. She shut her eyes for a moment. The war had taken its toll on everybody. It pit witch and wizard against their own brethren. Many of her graduating class played integral parts on both sides of the war. Many had already given their lives fighting against Voldemort and his Death Eaters.
Death Eater activity seemed to be increasing over the past couple of months. Their forces seemed to increase in strength; gaining new members each week. These were dangerous times as Professor Dumbledore put it.
There was going to be an offensive that evening; an ambush that could turn the tables on the side of the Dark. Conners’ information placed several prominent Death Eaters in an abandon villa on the outskirts of town; probably planning their own offensive. The wizened professor requested a call for action. The majority of the audience cheered.
Hermione shook herself out of her daze, just as the room started to empty. A group of young wizards gathered near Conners and Professor Dumbledore. She saw her husband and her brother-in-law in the crowd. She felt as if her heart leapt into her throat. Professor Snape joined the now growing group of young wizards and witches who were volunteering for the latest mission; although to Hermione he seemed to do it with reluctance.
Hermione stayed glued to her spot. She had a strange feeling about this mission. She watched as the group emptied into the hall discussing their plans. She got to her feet to follow the group hoping to catch her husband.
“Ron,” she said as she lunged for his arm; she missed. “Ron!”
“Hermione,” Ron said, turning to see the concern in his wife’s eyes. He turned to Harry, “I’ll catch up later, Harry.”
Harry nodded at him. Ron turned back to Hermione, smiling. His smile faded as he saw the somber look on her face.
“Ron, something feels wrong about this,” Hermione said as her husband pulled her into an embrace.
“Hermione, we have to act,” he said pushing her away a little so that he could look into her eyes.
“I just feel like something is going to happen.”
“We need to stop them. Taking those guys out will tip the balance into our favor.”
“Can’t you just hold off on one mission, Ron? You’re allowed to skip one,” she said looking into his eyes.
“Hermione.”
“What about us?” Hermione couldn’t think of anything else to say.
Ron almost forgot about their anniversary. He saw a tear roll down her cheek. He wiped it with his thumb.
“Hermione, to not join in would be irresponsible of me. It would be selfish, you know that.”
“I don’t want to lose you, Ron.”
“I’ve always come back, Hermione.”
“I know, Ron,” she said as tears started to flow once again. “I just have a bad feeling about this.
“This isn’t fair. We’re supposed to be celebrating our life together.”
“Hermione, succeeding in this mission would mean peace in our world. You know that,” he said kissing her cheeks. “It’ll give us a future. It’ll give our kids a future.”
Hermione looked up at him. She grabbed the back of his neck and pulled his head down for a deep kiss as if for the first and last time. He kissed her back, just as deeply.
Hermione knew he was right. She also knew her auror intuition was never wrong either. She knew she wouldn’t be able to talk him out of going. Their eyes locked for a long moment. She looked down.
She could hear his breathing. She looked back up at him. She gave his left hand a squeeze. She grabbed for his shoulders and pulled him into a hug.
“Come back home safe,” she said into his neck. She felt him nod.
He gulped as she let go of him. He took one last look at her before he left her in the hallway as he followed the rest of the members. She remained glued to her spot again, crying silent tears as she watched him walk farther and farther away.

Hermione tossed and turned as she tried to get some sleep. She didn’t know when she stopped crying. She didn’t know when she fell asleep. But she did remember waking up with a start. She remembered crying into her palms until she saw the sun peek over the horizon from her bedroom window.
