Amanda's Strange Dream

Author’s Note

In this chapter our new Seer has a very strange dream. Hmm…snakes and mongooses…what could it mean?

Enjoy!

Amelia

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Amanda’s bare feet stepped cautiously on the dewy grass beneath them. The forest around her was lush, but dark and foreboding. The only light that shone was coming down from the full moon that was perched high in the sky above her. Carefully, she made her way through a grouping of trees, sweeping the leaf-laden branches away from her face so they wouldn’t scratch her. Then she saw it, a round, homemade broom leaned up against a tall oak tree. That was her key. She stopped in her tracks as they key jolted her mind into consciousness. She had set the trigger of the broom image in her mind each time she meditated. She had used that symbol to induce a lucid dreaming state for years, and with excellent results.
As she came to herself, she began to hear hissing noises from a clearing up ahead. Her brown eyes looked down at her body and she suddenly realized that she was dressed in her nightgown. Quietly, she concentrated on her Dream Self. In a few seconds, her appearance changed. She was no longer a short, pudgy woman, but a tall, lady knight with an athletic build and long, blonde hair. She was now dressed in leather and light chain mail covered by a blue tabard that was adorned with the Collins family crest. A quiver of silver-tipped, wooden arrows was perched on her back, and a long recurve bow was in her right hand. Around her neck, a silver pendant with the Eye of Horus engraved into it glowed with a soft, white light. Tall, leather boots adorned her feet.
She moved slowly, stopping behind a tree at the edge of the clearing so that she couldn’t be seen. When she peeked into the clearing she saw several snakes gathered in a circle. All but two of them were black and rather smallish. One was quite large and had red stripes on it as well as a cobra’s hood. The other odd one was white and also had a cobra’s hood. The white snake was next to the black and red snake, and seemed more observant than the others that were present. It was strange. The white snake had dark brown eyes, while the rest had red eyes. They were hissing in turn, as if they were conversing with one another. Amanda wondered if it was the language she had heard about, but since she’d never heard parsel tongue spoken, she couldn’t be sure. Off to the right, she spotted a small, brown mongoose that was tied to a tree. It was struggling to get free from the ropes that held it, and was chattering angrily. Its red eyes were ablaze with rage.
For a minute she pondered what to do. She knew that the only animal that was effective in killing snakes was a mongoose, but why was the mongoose tied? It didn’t make much sense, but then again, it was a dream. Everything was symbolic. Finally, she decided to help the mongoose. After pulling an arrow out and placing it against the bowstring, she took careful aim at the knot that held the rope around the mongoose and fired. The knot was instantly severed, allowing the mongoose to squirm free. She watched from the shadows as the mongoose ran towards the black and red snake. A terrible fight ensued between them. To her surprise, the white snake attacked the other black snakes. After an intense battle, the mongoose and the white snake succeeded in killing the other snakes.
She woke with a start and looked around to see that she was once again in her small bedroom in the Astronomy tower. After taking a minute to center herself, she sat up and pondered what she had just witnessed. A white snake turning on its own kind and helping a mongoose certainly was strange. That would never happen in nature, so she wondered if it meant something important. The dream had certainly been lucid, and quite vivid.
As she got ready for breakfast, she kept going over the dream in her mind, but decided to keep it to herself until she could properly analyze it. Tonight, she would have to do a reading to get more insight into what the dream was telling her. She had a strange feeling in the pit of her stomach, a feeling that something important was about to happen, but she couldn’t put her finger on it. Before she came, Albus had warned her that the Dark Lord was back and now out in the open. Perhaps the dream had something to do with him. If it did, trouble was sure to follow, she was sure of it. She had to be careful though, considering her predecessor’s dramatics. An outright prediction of peril would certainly be met with skepticism. She wasn’t about to be another Sybil Trelawney.
