Chapter Three – Dinner
Lucius dressed in his black velvet evening suit, tied a black cravat around his neck over his silk shirt, and tied back his silver blonde hair at the nape of his neck with a black velvet riband. He briefly checked his appearance in the mirror and left for the main drawing room again. The house elves had told him his guests were there now.
Lucius entered the drawing room and nearly stumbled before recovering himself. For an instant he had thought Olivia was naked, her short beige dress resembling her own skin tones. His physical reaction was sudden and intense. He walked grimly over to Olivia and her father. “Would you care for a drink before we go in to dinner?” he asked. He quickly moved behind a wing chair to hide his body’s obvious interest.
“Do you have lemonade?” asked Olivia. Her father agreed that lemonade would suit him also.
“I’m certain we can find some,” Lucius replied smoothly. He summoned a house elf and gave the order for two lemonades. The drinks appeared immediately. Lucius was quietly pleased that his future wife had chosen a non-alcoholic drink. He personally was abstemious about liquor. It made one lose control and this was anathema to Lucius. He was already shaken from his lack of control at his reaction to Olivia’s imagined nudity.
Dinner was served in the large dining room and Lucius escorted Olivia while her father trailed them down the hall. Lucius again was experiencing a distinct reaction to being so close to Olivia. He saw her to her seat and hurriedly sat down to hide his lap.
After the second course of their sumptuous meal, Olivia’s father asked Lucius, “Mr. Malfoy, why is pureblood a requirement in your bride?”
“My family can be traced back for many hundreds of years. The Malfoys have always married and bred only pureblood wizards and witches. Our heritage includes extremely prominent ancestors well-known in the British magical world. I wish to continue the tradition.”
“So you hope to have more children then?” asked her father.
“I definitely hope to have more children, Mr. White.” Lucius turned to Olivia who had sat silently as the men conversed. “Do you hope for children, Miss White?”
Olivia colored up but said evenly, “Yes, I would like children Mr. Malfoy. And please call me Olivia, or Livvy if you wish.”
“We agree then,” said Lucius. “Please, I would be honored to have you call me Lucius, Olivia. And you too, Mr. White.”
“And I am James, Lucius. This meal is delicious.”
“Thank you. My house elves see to the food and housekeeping. Do you have house elves in California?”
“No, no elves. At home our wands have to do the work of your elves,” said James White.
As the meal continued Lucius discovered that his potential fiancée had been home-schooled instead of sent to school for her magical training. Her mother and father had tutored her in the entire curriculum needed for an educated witch plus knowledge of the Muggle world which no magical school included.
“In California and in the United States as a whole, our community is much more spread out than in England. We would have a great deal more trouble dealing with our surroundings if we had no understanding of the Muggle world. It’s more of a survival technique there,” said James.
Lucius mused, her knowledge might be an advantage somewhere down the line for me, as much as I despise the Muggle world. He knew he was ignorant of a force he might do well to cultivate later. He made interested noises and sent for the next course.
Toward the end of the meal James said, “May I ask bluntly when you will make a decision on considering my daughter for your wife?”
“I’m sorry,” Lucius raised one aristocratic eyebrow, “I had thought the decision was made when you came through the portkey. I am quite willing to accept Olivia as my bride. I would like to discuss wedding arrangements as soon as tomorrow if both of you are agreeable.”
