They climbed out, one by one, and gazed up at the massive castle. Opposite of what they felt in their first year, the castle no longer intimidated them. Instead, it filled them with a jumble of feelings: apprehension toward the oncoming studies, happiness at finally being back, and eagerness to see all their friends.
“Come on, let’s get in there before everyone gets the good seats at the table,” Harry said, and all four rushed up the steps and in the great double doors. When they reached the Great Hall, they paused for a minute. They headed down to the Gryffindor table, and spotted four seats, two across from the other. They rushed to them and sat down, the boys on one side and the girls on the other.
Dumbledore viewed the Great Hall with a wide smile on his face and a bright twinkle in his eyes. He spotted Harry, Ron, and Hermione at the Gryffindor table. Next to Hermione sat Lialani Turowsky, the girl with a very powerful magical power lurking behind those mismatched eyes of hers. He watched them talk animatedly for a minute, but was brought out of his musings by a voice from his left.
“Albus, I think you should tell them about now,” Severus whispered.
“Yes,” Albus sighed and clapped his hands to get the students’ attention.
Everyone looked up at Albus and the only sounds in the entire Hall were the sounds of robes rustling as their owners swiveled around.
“Welcome back, those of you who are returning, and welcome to those who are just joining us. After the Sorting Ceremony, I have a few announcement to make,” Albus said and sat down.
Murmurs filled the Hall, but were quieted as the Sorting Hat sang this year’s song. Everyone watched as each House gained fifteen new members. They sat at their respective houses, and when it was over, everyone turned expectantly to Albus.
“First, I would like to say that this year have a returning teacher as the Defense against the Dark Arts teachers, Professor Lupin!”
Harry, Ron, and Hermione climbed to their feet to cheer loudly. Lialani took it one step further and stood on the table, put her fingers in her moth, and whistled loudly.
“Miss Turowsky, I would appreciate it if you stepped off the table and back onto the floor where you belong,” Lupin called out, but his wide smile betrayed the stern tone.
Lialani whistled again, and moved to get off the table. Harry laughed and offered her his arm to lean on as she hopped off the table. She smiled brightly at him, her teeth now back to their original pearly white, and sat back down.
Albus held up his hands and the Hall was quiet in a matter of seconds.
“Secondly, I would like to add that it would be appreciated greatly if students would please stay off the tables,” Albus looked pointedly over his half-moon spectacles at Lailani. “Thirdly, the Forbidden Forest is off-limits with the exception of classes. On the final subject, no one will be allowed to leave Hogwarts for holidays and vacations. The chance that Voldemort’s supporters will start attacking is too great and Hogwarts is the safest place you can be right now.”
The Hall was deathly silent. Any and all talk had ceased at this announcement. Everyone looked at everyone else, questions running through their minds.
Albus ignored the questioning looks, “And now you may enjoy the feast.” He clapped, the food appearing on the plates, and sat back down.
Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Lialani paid no attention to the food that had appeared. They looked at each other. Each had noticed the underlying worry in Dumbledore’s voice, and it bothered them.
Albus stood back up, having forgot one more thing. The students quieted as they noticed this.
“Would Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley, Hermione Granger, and Lialani Turowsky please step up to the Head Table,” Albus announced, hearing the murmurs start up again.
The four looked at each other, and got up, heading to the table. They walked closely together, each worrying about what was coming. When they reached the table, Albus beckoned to them and walked out the back door. They followed him, the same question mirrored in all four pairs of eyes, “What’s going on?”
When they reached Albus’s office, “Weasley’s Wheezes” and the gargoyle leapsideside. They climbed the winding staircase, and when they reached the office, they were met with Severus.
“Why is he here?” Harry asked, gesturing to Severus.
“I requested that he be here,” Albus replied. “Now sit.”
They sat immediately.
“Now, you want to know why I’ve called you up here.”
Four heads nodded eagerly.
“You know that Professor Snape used to be a Death Eater. And that now he works for the Order. But what you do not know, Mr. Potter, Mr. Weasley, Miss Granger, is that Miss Turowsky has been too, over the summer.”
Harry, Ron, and Hermione looked at Lialani. She smiled faintly, but her eyes had lost some of the sparkle that they had earlier.
“Now, Miss Turowsky has a very rare power, rarer than your Parselmouth, Mr. Potter. She has the ability to read minds, move things with her mind, start fires with her mind, all her senses are about fifty times more powerful than ours, and at her any whim, she can become ghost-like and walk through any solid object. Did I forget anything, child?” he asked Lialani.
The other three looked boggled at the thought of any more powers.
“Two things. I can levitate and explode things with my mind,” Lialani replied.
Harry’s, Hermione’s, and Ron’s faces wore identical expressions of shock.
“Well, Professor, I think you should say that she has a rare combination of powers,” Hermione said.
“No, Miss Granger, there is a name for this combination of powers. It is called ‘Magnesius’. Lialani is a Magnesius.”
“Oh!” Hermione cried. “I’ve read about those. There has been a single Magnesius in the past t hun hundred years!”
Albus nodded. “Therefore, you can imagine our shock when, in Miss Turowsky’s first year, she grew angry and most of her powers took effect at once. She went twenty feet in the air and fire appeared all around her so we could not get anywhere near her. Things started flying which way and that-Here, let me show you.”
Albus got to his feet, opened a cabinet behind him, and removed his Pensieve. He placed it on the desk in front of them, and swirled it. At once, the Potions’ classroom appeared. Everyone leaned in to fall through, including Severus, who was there when it happened.
An eleven-year-old Lialani stood before them, stirring her potion. Her eyes were bright with angry fire, and suddenly, she lifted up into the air, students aroher her being pushed against the walls by unseen hands. They watched as Dumbledore appeared in the doorway. Then, almost as if Lialani saw him even though her eyes were closed, a ring of fire blazed up around her, locking her in the middle, although unhurt by the heat given off by the flames. They saw Albus’ and Severus’ shocked faces as potion-ingredient bottles, chairs and Severus’ desk began to fly around the room. Cauldrons exploded one by one, strewing their contents all over the room. Then, as the past Albus pointed up, everyone in the room looked up and watched as Lialani floated through the ceiling and out of sight. With a flick of present-day Albus’ wand, the desed red room swirled around them. In a few seconds, the spinning colors ebbed away and they found themselves in the present, which was Albus’ office.
