Our Paths Cross Again

Chapter 28

Hermione and Severus were the last ones to enter the Great Hall for breakfast. Albus and Minerva gave the couple a weak smile. Both new this could be the last peaceful moment the couple would have. No one really knew what was going to happen. After breakfast, Albus had the heads of each house gather their students.

Flintwick, Trelawney, and Firenze were going to be staying with the students in a secluded location until it was safe for them to return. An hour after the students were gone, the Order, Aurors and the light’s allies were gathered in the Great Hall.

“Now then, all we must do is wait. That is the hardest thing. I want everyone to spend the day preparing. At six this evening, Hermione and Severus will set out for the lake. Those who will be in Hagrid’s hut will move into position before sunset. Now go and prepare.” Albus instructed.

Severus and Hermione exited the Great Hall and headed for the dungeons. Just then Remus, Sirius and Harry stepped out in front of them.

“Did you guys need something?” Hermione asked.

“We were wondering if we could talk to you two. It won’t take long.” Remus answered.

Severus nodded. The five continued on to Severus’s sitting room. Once inside Severus quickly poured them all a drink. Severus sat beside Hermione on the sofa while Sirius remained standing and Remus and Harry took the two arm chairs.

“What did you want to talk about?” Hermione asked.

“We just wanted to tell you two to be careful tonight. Sirius and Remus will be in Hagrid’s hut. I’ll be waiting with Albus and the others. Also, if things get to hairy for you, I want you two to promise that you will retreat.” Harry answered.

“Harry…” Hermione started.

“No! Hermione, you and Snape promise me! I’ve already lost Ron! I’ll be damned if I lose you two as well! I know that Snape and I never got along, but you have chosen him. I would like the chance to maybe get to know him. I can’t do that if you two get yourselves killed!” Harry yelled.

“We promise Potter. If things get too bad tonight I will get myself and Hermione out of there.” Severus said.

Harry and Severus just stared at one another for a moment. Finally, Harry nodded. The five went over the plan to make sure Severus and Hermione would at least make it away when the fighting began. Ten minutes later Severus and Hermione were alone. Severus noticed Hermione was trembling slightly.

“Hermione, what’s wrong? You’re trembling.” he asked.

“I can’t shake the feeling something is going to happen. Something bad.” she answered.

Severus just took her in his arms. He had been feeling the same thing. They remained in his chambers. Finally, it was time. Hermione and Severus donned their cloaks and made their way to the main hall. Albus gave them each a pat on the shoulder and nodded.

Severus and Hermione made their way toward the lake. On the outside they appeared as calm as usual. However on the inside, both were alert and were clutching their wands. Ready for anything. From Hagrid’s Sirius stood watching the window that Hermione had magically placed there.

“Should be any minute now. They’re nearing the forest.” he said.

Outside Hermione and Severus were looking toward the forest. Suddenly Hermione caught movement.

“Did you see that?” she asked.

“Yes. Get ready.” Severus answered.

A second later two stunners came flying at them. Severus shoved himself and Hermione to the ground. Then it began. The Death Eaters and Voldemort came rushing out of the forest at the same time the forces on the light came pouring from the castle and Hagrid’s hut. The battle began.

Hermione and Severus were now standing with Albus, Minerva, Sirius and Remus. Harry was plowing his way through the group of Death Eaters as he made his way toward Voldemort.

“Well, well. Harry Potter.” Voldemort said.

“Time to die Voldemort.” Harry hissed.

Instantly the two began dueling. Hermione and Severus soon found themselves separated from the others. Hermione was covered in blood. When she wasn’t using her wand she was using a sword. Suddenly, Severus caught sight of something.

“HERMIONE! LOOK OUT!” Severus yelled.

Just as Hermione turned around, she was hit. A second later Severus too was hit. The battle continued as somehow Sirius and Remus got Severus and Hermione into the castle and to Poppy. It was shortly after ten when Severus came too.

“Ugh. What happened?” Severus moaned.

“Take it easy. You were hit by a curse Severus. You’ll be just fine.” Poppy answered.

“Hermione? Where is she? Is she all right?” Severus demanded.

“She’s right here. It seems she was hit by two curse that canceled each other out. She will be just fine. I expect she will awaken tomorrow. She’ll have one hell of a head ache, but she’ll be good as new.” Poppy explained.

Severus let out a relieved sigh. Severus spent the night in the hospital wing sitting at her side. He went to sleep only after Poppy forced him to drink a vial of sleeping draught. When he woke up the next morning and found Hermione sitting up eating breakfast.

“You’re awake!” he cried.

“Yeah.” she smiled.

Severus was instantly at her side, pulled her in his arms and kissed her. Hermione melted into his embrace. They pulled apart a few minutes later.

“I was so worried when I saw you hit.” he said.

“Severus, I’m fine. I had a headache, but that’s about it. Poppy said once I finish breakfast and you eat, we can go. I’m anxious to find out what happened.” she replied.

An hour later the couple made their way to Albus’s office. Albus greeted them both with a smile and hug. They all sat down. Albus fixed them a cup of tea and began telling them what happened.

“After you were brought inside, Harry started gaining the upper hand. We managed to capture or kill all the Death Eaters. Now it was up to Harry. We watched. Their wands locked. Suddenly Harry pulled out a back up wand and yelled the killing curse. Voldemort didn’t even have the chance to scream. Suddenly he exploded. The only thing left was his wand. Harry snapped it and burned it. Voldemort is gone for good.” Albus explained.

“Sounds kind of Anti-climatic.” Hermione said.

“It was really. Now, what are you two going to do now that the threat is over?” Albus asked.

“Well, I will be leaving soon. I don’t belong here anymore.” Hermione answered.

“As for me, you better start looking for a replacement. When the term ends, I will be leaving as well. I’ve been here long enough. Perhaps, too long.” Severus replied.

Albus nodded and smiled. The three stayed and talked a while longer. Severus and Hermione left the office and headed outside. The day was bright and sunny. They walked toward the lake and just watched the sun glitter off the water. Finally both were free.
