Chapter 28: As We Begin Our Lives in Earnest

In A Lifetime
Chapter 28: As We Begin Our Lives in Earnest

Hermione Granger-Snape and Ginevra Weasley sat at the edge of the frozen lake, Ginny completing the transfiguration of her shoes into ice skates. Hermione, careful as always, ran her wand across the surface of the lake, ensuring that it was, indeed, frozen solid.

“If I break a bone,” stated Ginny, venturing onto the ice with trepidation, “I will hex you.”

“Cushioning charms work wonders, Gin,” remarked Hermione, gracefully gliding onto the cold frozen surface.

“Right,” said the younger witch, “cushioning charms. Why didn’t I think of that?”

Charms in place, the two friends silently skated in the twilight, enjoying the chill in the air and the stars beginning to twinkle in the quickly darkening sky. The lake was illuminated by torches that got brighter as the night grew darker.

“Hermione?” Ginny’s voice broke the silence.

“Yes?”

“When are the others coming?”

“Severus said he would show up later, but that he would not strap a pair of blades to his feet for any reason. I believe Harry’s coming after his match, Ron will probably come with him, Minerva will be here shortly…”

“And Remus?”

“Remus should be here, too.”

“With Kyla,” stated Ginny, sighing.

“More than likely. I could hardly invite one without the other. Tonks should be here, too, and Neville…”

“This was a good idea, a winter skating party,” said Ginny, her attention drawn to a group arriving on the lake shore, “it’s Harry, Ron, Fred, George, and I think Tonks,” she said, squinting her eyes and waving a mittened hand at the group.

Hermione smiles as she pushed off sliding across the lake and coming to a graceful stop in front of her arriving friends.

“Welcome!” she said with a smile,” there’s hot chocolate and warmth under that canopy, not to mention Molly baked a ton of sweets. If you want to skate, the lake is frozen hard and all you have to do is transfigure your boots.”

Harry and Ron were first on the ice, with the twins headed to find the food and Tonks contemplating the dangers inherent in ice skating. Harry smiled at Hermione as he quickly caught up to Ginny. Ron lagged behind Harry and smiled nervously at Hermione.

“It’s good to see you,” he said, uncertainty in his voice.

“It’s good to see you, too, Ron. I haven’t seen you since the handfasting. You disappeared so quickly after the ceremony.”

“I wasn’t sure how welcome I really would be.”

“You were welcome,” said Hermione, taking his hand and skating around the lake, “have you done all Albus asked of you?”

“I’ve made amends with all those I’ve hurt. Except Remus. I’m hoping to talk to him tonight,” said Ron, the uncertainty again showing in his eyes, “I attempted with Snape…er…Severus…”

“And in his way, he’s forgiven. As have I,” said Hermione with a wistful smile, “things were so much simpler when we were children. When you were a prat and it could be explained away as adolescence. Now…it’s so much more. It’s intolerance, missing soul fragments, refusal to accept that things change.”

“I can’t blame it all on the soul fragment,” stated Ron sadly, “it would be so easy if I could. ‘Yah, um, sorry for cheating on you, Lav, but you know, I was missing a bit of my soul. I think it was the fidelity bit…’ Not that it would have worked, mind you. Lavender has accepted my apologies for lying, cheating, and being a lousy husband, but she will never forgive me.”

“And in reality,” said Hermione, “should she?”

“No.”

They skated on in silence, Hermione catching a glance at Ron’s eyes. They were watering but not from the cold. She squeezed his hand.

“We’re not children anymore, but we are still friends,” she said.

“And that means more to me than you could ever imagine.”

“I can imagine. We’ve all grown and changed, but there are things that can never be taken from us. Battles with trolls…”

“And the resulting troll snot.”

“The terrors we put Severus through.”

“You set him on fire.”

“Well, yes,” agreed Hermione, skating away from Ron backward, a gleam of childish mischief in her brown eyes.

“And you stole from his stores.”

“There is that as well.”

“And you constantly waved your hand in his class, irritating him to no end.”

Hermione nodded.

“Come to think of it, ‘Mione, you put Snape through the most of all of us.”

“He had no choice but to marry me in order to get on my good side,” she said, grinning.
“You’re happy?” asked Ron, slowing to a stop in the middle of the frozen lake.

“Deliriously so,” stated Hermione, “Now it’s your turn. Yours and Harry’s. I can’t be the only one with a happy ending.

“You’re the one who deserves the happy ending.”

“We all do,” said Hermione, her gaze turning to the shoreline where she glimpsed her husband chatting with Minerva, “All of us.”

With a brilliant smile, Hermione skated away from Ron, past Ginny and Harry, and took a literal leap of faith from the ice towards her husband. Severus neatly caught her in his arms.

“You took quite a chance there, my dear,” he said, his eyes radiating the love he felt.

“Not really,” said Hermione, “those we love will always catch us…one way or another.”

She wrapped herself in the warmth of her husband’s arms, and smiled radiantly at those around her: her comrades, her fellow Order Members, her colleagues…her friends. One more chapter of her life ended, and a new one beginning. That’s that thing about life. There’s always another chapter and always a chance for a happy ending.
