Our Paths Cross Again

Chapter 26

Nobody moved at first. They were all staring at Albus and then turning to face the man. Hermione was the first to get her voice back. She took a deep breath and then spoke.

“Okay, where’s Ron then?” she asked.

“We don’t know.” Albus answered.

Hermione spun and walked toward the man who was bound to a chair. A loud slap rang through the room. Hermione had just slapped the man so hard the chair actually tipped over. Hermione pulled the chair back upright and then stared into the man’s eyes.

“Where is Ron Weasley? And if you lie to me so help you god I will make Voldemort seem like a little school boy.” she hissed.

“I…I killed him. I have been keeping his body hidden and used a preservation charm so I could continue to collect his hair for the potion.” the man stuttered.

“Where?” Hermione demanded.

“In his apartment. He’s hidden in the bedroom closet.” the man answered.

Albus then nodded to Kingsley and Tonks. They grabbed the man and left through the floo. Hermione then looked over at Harry. Harry was sitting on the sofa with his head in his hands. She knew he was holding back his tears.

“What do we do?” Remus asked.

“I don’t know. Kingsley said he found the man in a brothel in Knockturn Alley. The owner said he had been there for at least an hour.” Albus answered.

“And I know for a fact that he was here for at least an hour in the hospital wing. I punched him and broke his jaw. Harry, what time did you two leave?” Hermione asked.

“By the time we got to the gates it was one.” Harry answered sadly.

“And the owner said he arrived a few seconds after her clock struck one.” Albus added.

“It sounds like he went straight there from here. So there’s a very good chance he didn’t tell Voldemort our plan. Unless Voldemort can talk to his followers using telepathy, we will still have the upper hand.” Hermione said.

“What do we tell the Order?” Sirius asked.

“The truth. Remus, Sirius, I want you to go retrieve Ronald’s body so we can bury him alongside his family.” Albus answered.

Sirius and Remus quickly rushed out. That was it. The entire Weasley clan was now gone. Hermione walked over and sat beside Harry. She saw his shoulders trembling slightly. Hermione took the young man into her arms and began stroking his hair.

“Don’t worry Harry. Voldemort will ay for this. I swear he will.” she whispered.

“I should…have…noticed. There…were little…things different…about Ron. I…I… should have seen it.” Harry sobbed.

“Harry, this isn’t your fault. How could you have known. We weren’t expecting something like this. Otherwise we would have noticed.” Albus replied.

“Potter, you need to go and rest. This is hard for you. You will be thinking more clearly after you’ve rested.” Severus said.

Harry nodded. Hermione hugged him and kissed his cheek. She watched sadly as Harry flooed home. Albus then told the couple to get some rest as well. Hermione and Severus walked out of the office. They walked into Severus’s sitting room. Severus poured them both a glass of Fire whiskey and joined Hermione on the sofa.

“You going to be all right?” he asked.

“I will feel much better once Ron and his family are avenged. And that will only happen when Voldemort is dead and gone.” she answered.

Severus summoned the bottle and refilled their glasses. Hermione sat staring into the fire. She couldn’t believe that Ron was dead. She had seriously considered killing the man outright, but somehow managed to restrain herself. She finished her drink, sat the glass on the coffee table and walked out of the room.

Severus knew she would need to be alone. He sighed, sat his empty glass down and headed for the lab. He decided to begin brewing some more healing potions. He had no doubt that they would be needed when the final battle happened.

That evening Severus ate in the Great Hall. He asked Hermione if she was going up to eat but she said no. He knew this was hitting her hard. The last time she had seen the real Ron Weasley had been the night before she was sent away.

“Where’s Hermione?” Minerva asked.

“She is in her rooms. She was going to eat in tonight. This is hard for her Minerva. When she is ready she will talk. I won’t push her. But somehow I feel that this is something she needs to work through on her own and I will respect that.” Severus answered.

Severus finished his dinner and left. He went in to check on Hermione. She was in her sitting room. Her dinner sitting on the coffee table while she sat on the floor before the fire. He quietly entered the room and joined her on the floor.

“I’m going to make that bastard pay. Pay for everything he’s done to me.” she said quietly.

“I know you will. Now, let’s get you in bed. You too will be thinking more clearly after you’ve had a good night’s rest.” he replied.

Hermione allowed him to gather her into his arms and carry her to bed. He used his wand and changed her into her pajamas. He then left, went to the lab, grabbed a vial and returned.

“Just in case. Good night, Hermione. I will see you in the morning.” Severus said as he placed the vial on the nightstand and kissed her forehead.

Hermione nodded. She knew what Severus was doing. He was giving her space. She knew that she would not cry while he was with her. SO he was giving her the opportunity to let those tears out.

Severus himself climbed into his bed ten minutes later. He hoped Hermione would let her emotions out. She was finally beginning to show emotions. He feared that the news of Ron being dead would cause her to shut down again. He only hoped his fears were wrong.
