Epilogue
A/N: ok, this is it folks, the final chapter. I know it is a short one, but that is Severus, right? Simple and to the point. Thank you for all of your support. It has been a fun ride! By the way, if anyone wants to use this to jump start a sequel or whatnot, by all means do! I would love to read it..lol. I hope you all have a happy Holiday season. A couple of loose ends: Ron remains in Azkaban to this point, no further contact. Hermione remains close with the rest of the weasleys as she always was. Yes, everyone was shocked (and a few pissed off) that she and severus got married and were even involved. (but who is going to mess with that dour man?) Ginny and Harry have a little boy named James who is one year younger than Hermione\'s daughter. Ok, think that covers it....it has been a true joy!
Ch. 24 Epilogue
They were married on a Tuesday in August. It was small and simple, only Harry, Ginny, and Minerva McGonagall as guests. Over the next few years, life was not easy or simple. They had to adjust and sacrifice.
Severus was walking up to the front door of the small cottage he and Hermione had decided to purchase a couple of years back. The front walk was covered in snow. “Hmph.” He huffed, if Hermione would just let him acquire a house elf, it would not be an issue.
He opened the front door and was affronted with the smell of baked goods. He rolled his eyes. No doubt his wife had been baking all day, another chore that could have been avoided with an elf.
“Persephone, darling, come help mummy.” He heard her call from the living room. The sound of small feet padding through the hallway made him smile. He peered around and watched a 4 year old girl with light brown waves running to her mother.
The girl was her mother in miniature. The only trace of Weasley blood was the copper highlights that reflected in certain light off of her hair.
He put his coat on the hook by the door, removed his boots, and went to the doorway that led to their small living room.
As always, it looked like a Christmas nymph had vomited cheer all over the place. In the corner, Hermione was lifting up the little girl to put a star on top of the tree.
He shook his head, “Here, let me help ladies.” Hermione turned and smiled at her husband. He placed his arms loosely around her waist before giving her a quick kiss.
He put the star in place then picked up his little girl to receive his welcome home hug. He had realized, not long ago, that she had been HIS little girl from the day he heard her tiny heartbeat…genetics mattered not.
A cry from across the room detached Hermione from the trio. She gracefully glided over to a small basket-type bed and picked up a squirming baby boy. His head was filled with silky, black curls.
When she had the baby calmed, she turned to her daughter. “Persephone, do you want to tell your dad what you did today, or do I need to do it?” Severus looked down at the young girl with his intimidating sneer.
She looked defiantly back, arms crossed. Hermione sighed, “Well, our little angel used magic today to hit little James Potter with a small rock.” Severus had to bite back the smirk that was threatening to break through.
“And why, dare I ask, would you do such a thing?” he scolded. Persephone’s eyes filled with tears. “He keeps pulling my hair.” Severus led her out to the hall. He there gave her a quick hug and commended her efforts, but not to tell mummy.
She beamed and went back in to finish with the decorations. Severus smiled, oh to see his girl give Potter’s son his come uppance. He made his way back to the doorway.
Hermione was rocking baby Sebastian, who had been quite the surprise to both of them, while Persephone cuddled close to her. Hermione had a story book out, reading to them both.
The smile that crossed his face was a rare thing. But, as Severus looked in on his happy little family, he thought ‘after all the hard times and sorrow, does life really get much better this?’
