Chapter Twenty-Four - Hiding

Olivia was left to console her son and explain to a four-year-old why his father had left him. He didn’t understand why his father should be scared of him or angry with him. He thought he had done something wrong. Olivia tried to let her son know that his father wasn’t used to sensing the feelings of other people, that it was new to him and had scared him.

She promised her little boy, “Your father will come back when he has learned to control his senses.” He understood that much, because he was still learning the same thing. “I could help him,” her son generously offered.

Olivia had no choice but to wait for Lucius to work out his grievances with her and she hoped his love for his son would overcome his antipathy about his offspring’s genetic makeup. Lucius was now literally in the position of knowing exactly how it felt to be empathic, if he could only accept the change. Lucius would only ever be able to read his wife and now his son. Not others. He wasn’t a true empath, only bondmated to one.

Olivia waited on the Scottish shore for two weeks, but Lucius never came. She finally closed up the house and removed herself and her son and Minnie to the estate in pursuit of her errant husband. She was through waiting for him to work things out and return. Her son was hurting and that she would no longer tolerate.

Lucius had gone home to his estate and hidden away from Olivia and the magical world. The house elves took care of everything as always, but he was discovering his refuge was now turning into more of a cage than his prison cell had ever been. The rooms echoed with memories of a wife he had learned to love, and his favorite rooms had become unbearable. He tried to move to other rooms in the mansion, there were many to choose from, but after a few days, he always needed to move again. Lucius needed time to be part of the world again after his long incarceration, but he also felt the need to protect himself from the unhealing wound from his wife.

His investments were still being run by his father-in-law. James White had offered to return the reins of the businesses to Lucius, but Lucius held off, citing illness. He was afraid to meet anyone and find he now read the emotions or thoughts of others. He hadn’t really absorbed the fact that his only talent was with his wife and child.
