Chapter Twenty-Three - Freaks

Olivia shared continual moving photos with Lucius of their baby’s progress, while mourning her inability to bring father and son together. Minnie was a great help with baby care and they both shared upkeep of the house. Olivia and Minnie became friends instead of mistress and elf. It was a surprise to Minnie that she liked it.

As the months and then years rolled by, Lucius was able to hear his boy on the phone and then talk to him. Their son had numerous awkward child’s questions as he got older, but Lucius tried to answer them truthfully. If Lucius was disconsolate on the inside during Olivia’s visits, he tried not to show it, not understanding she could read it all on him anyway. She allowed him his private grief and brought flurries of daily photos. Their routine as a family was unusual but they managed to thrive together. They were still surviving day by day in the cold North when word came of Voldemort’s downfall and death. It seemed a remote event.

Lucius was relaxing with Olivia on his cot one afternoon while she slept off a romp with their son that morning. He looked down at her funny, endearing curls and remembered a sayng from a Muggle headstone he’d once seen. He quietly quoted aloud, “‘And the wolf shall dwell with the lamb’. I wonder which of us is the wolf and which the lamb?” Their son would be four in a few days. He would miss the birthday, but he was due to leave Azkaban in three months. He smiled at the thought and fell asleep beside her.

Lucius was getting to know his wife very well. He could practically read her mind, he thought one day, when she attempted to sneak a photo of him for their son. He could feel her furtiveness focused on him. He laughed at her, and evaded the lens again. It was getting easier and easier to keep her from snapping him in his prison garb. He didn’t want his son to see that or his tiny cell. He found her magic phototaker and confiscated it. “That makes seventeen, Livvy. Please stop. You know I don’t like it.”

Olivia was not astonished any more at his perspicacity. She knew he was beginning to make the longed for connection with her emotionally. It was one legitimate reason she had held back from telling him before. He needed to have an equality of minds with her to feel comfortable in their future. But she also admitted she was scared to death he would leave her.

Lucius arrived on her doorstep at ten o’clock one evening three days before he was due to get out of prison. Olivia was shocked, then thrilled and jumped up into his arms. “Why?” she said through her happy tears.

Lucius hugged her tightly, walked into the house with her clutched to him and said, “Apparently the Warden’s nephew just got sent to prison for robbery, and the Warden wanted my cozy little nest for his relative. Don’t worry, I had my lawyer check all the papers and I’m legally released.” Lucius set down Olivia and said, “I guess my son is asleep already. Can I see him?”

Olivia and Lucius stepped into their son’s room and Lucius stood looking at him for a long time. He finally sighed, “He’s so beautiful, Livvy.” Then he turned to his wife, “Now, where’s your bedroom?”

Lucius took off his prison uniform for the last time and whisked it far away into the North Sea. He was pale as marble from five years without the sun, but the skin color looked oddly right to her. Olivia was entranced again as always. Lucius felt her physical attraction and responded unconsciously to it with his own quickly apparent arousal. He stalked his wife and she laughed, running around the bed. Lucius lifted her with a flick of his wrist and dumped her onto the bed, and came down beside her. He growled, “My rule – no clothes in bed!” and her clothes went flying against the wall leaving her as naked as he was.

Lucius was almost drunk with his sudden freedom. He moved over Olivia immediately and started touching her with intent. He knew she was getting excited by her emotions and by her wetness, but he didn’t notice his psychic connection in his own feverish concentration. Lucius responded to Livvy’s wandering hands by sliding into her. He was an expert now at satisfying her without suffering mayhem to himself. Lucius knew that Livvy just had a short fuse and he usually went along with her. He had no complaints about her extremely pleasing sexual eccentricity.

But Lucius hadn’t been in a real bed for many years and the freedom and sheer happiness went to his head. He stroked himself in and out of her, building a fierce magic aura around them that he’d not done before. He raised their senses to a fever pitch of pleasure that blended to the edge of pain for both of them. Lucius carried Livvy higher and higher until they both detonated with tremendous climaxes, hurling them into blackness.

Olivia was the first to recover and she felt Lucius as dead weight on her. She smoothed his hair from his face and kissed him. He groggily opened his eyes to slits and nuzzled her cheek before rolling off her in slow motion. They both lay there completely winded.

“What was that?” she sleepily whispered.

“I, uh, used a magic spell for our lovemaking,” Lucius replied.

“Well, it was spectacular, but next time can you tell me it’s coming?” Olivia yawned.

“It was perhaps a slight miscalculation on my part,” Lucius admitted. “I knew you were home-schooled and should have realized that sex education might not have been part of your curriculum. You were supposed to add your magic to mine and give us both intense pleasure. With only my magic working, it got a bit out of hand and lopsided.” Lucius entwined his fingers with hers. “Great homecoming. I’m sorry.”

“Oh, no, I want to try that again as soon as possible – uh, maybe next week,” she joked.

They grinned sleepily at each other and then both of them blinked out dead asleep.

The next morning, Lucius was awakened by a small body snuggling between him and Olivia. He looked down and saw his son awake and staring at him. “Who are you?” asked his son. Olivia was still sound asleep. No help there.

Lucius carefully touched his son’s silver blonde curly locks and looked into eyes the same color as his own. “You have your mother’s curly hair I see. Everything else is Malfoy.” Lucius didn’t know if he should baldly announce his paternity without Livvy helping.

His son took the problem away from him, “Are you my father?”

Lucius sighed, “Yes.” What did he do now?

His son said, “Don’t you like me? Why are you so scared?”

Lucius stared at his son in confusion, “I’m not scared.”

“Yes, you are. I can feel it inside you. You’re scared of me. And you’re getting angry.”

Lucius was feeling apprehension coming from Livvy and he looked over at her. She was staring back… with apprehension.

“Perhaps you can explain what exactly is happening here?” Lucius was getting annoyed. He could feel waves of fear from both Livvy and his son. His son moved up against his mother, sensing her fear. Lucius could feel his son’s confusion, too. “Olivia?”

“Oh, Lucius. I wanted to tell you in a gentler way. Please always know I love you.”

Lucius was seriously alarmed now. He couldn’t get out of bed since he was nude and had no robe. He was trapped for now.

Olivia got up and pulled on her robe, took her son to Minnie and came back to the bedroom in time to see Lucius pulling the sheet off the bed and draping himself in it.

“First things first,” he said. “I need clothes.” Olivia silently pulled open a closet and he saw many of his own clothes in it. He abandoned the sheet and dressed. “For starters, I’d like to know what the hell that was, just now.”

Olivia sat on the bed. “You know I was home-schooled but you don’t know why. Our family has the gift of empathy. We can read emotions in others.”

“You can read my mind?” Lucius choked, trying to take that in.

“No! I can’t read your mind. I can’t read anyone’s mind. I’m not telepathic, I’m empathetic.”

Lucius said with awful sarcasm, “Oh that makes it all better then.” He belatedly realized, “Then you have been able to feel all my emotions from Day One? Just when were you going to tell me, Olivia?”

“Actually, I couldn’t do it much until the night of Day One, when we kissed in your study. I didn’t see it coming, truly. I was completely blindsided, but it was done. After that there wasn’t a choice for me. If I had told you then, you would have left me, and we both would have faded to shells.” Olivia tried to make him understand. “I was bonded to you before I knew it.”

“You were bonded to me,” Lucius echoed her words. He hit back, “I thought you were bonded to my money.”

Olivia sighed, “Lucius, my gift chose you, but the minute I saw you walk into the drawing room, I wanted you even without any connection. I was willing to go through my entire life without a true bondmate if I could have you.” Olivia felt his pain and cried inside for how much she had hurt him.

Lucius was feeling her pain as well as his and recoiled, “Why do I know how you’re feeling? You are the empath, not I.”

“You were so closed off from everyone, Lucius. I knew our connection would evolve very slowly. I didn’t want to tell you about a change in your senses that wouldn’t happen for years. You would have freaked out.”

“No,” Lucius aimed his dart defensively, “You and your family are the freaks,” and as a new thought came to him, “and dear Goddess, my son is tainted with your empath genes, isn’t he?” Even as he spoke, he could feel her agony at his words. Vaguely, he could feel the uncertainty of his son at his mother’s pain.

Lucius felt pulled apart by all the emotional turmoil inside him and around him. He was becoming overwhelmed at the bombarding his senses were taking. Am I a freak now, too?he wondered. He was only just out of five years of a small room with only his wife as a lifeline. Now he felt betrayed by the one person in the world he had trusted. His world was crashing around him and he couldn’t cope. Lucius apparated away.
