Epilogue

“Yuriko!”
Kit jerked up in the bed reaching for someone who wasn’t there.
“Easy Kit, you’ve had a bit of a rough time but it’s over now.” Llewellen said putting his hand on the Hanyou’s shoulder.
Kit looked over to Shippo standing up to the ministrations of an over attentive Toshiro and a long glance passed between them.
“Yes.”

“I don’t know what you did out on the battlefield but draining your spirit energy like that is dangerous and not just for those standing in front of you.”
“Yes, Master.” Kit said ears drooping a little.
“As soon as we get back to Spirit Peak, we need to discuss this new ability of yours and how to train it. You will not use it again before then, understood.”
“Yes, Master.”
“Good. Now if you’ll excuse me, Terendil wants me to see about the castle shield spells.”

A few days later, a pale but recovering Kit was saying his goodbyes to Harry, Ron and Hermione in the great hall.
“I wish you didn’t have to leave,” Harry said.
“Yes, but it is rather inevitable given the fuss.”
“But that wasn’t your fault, it was the Skin Walker.”
“Yes, well not everyone sees it that way.”
He bent close and pulled them into a huddle.
“The pleasure of meeting you three more than makes up for it. You are special people and I think have big things ahead of you. Take care, ok?”

“It’s amazing,” Toshiro said as they walked away. “They have all forgotten about the Elves. Hell, most don’t even remember Dannon and he is still here.”
Dumbledore and another gentleman came up to meet them. Kit recognized the man as wand shop owner, Ollivander.
“Ah, Mister Coyote,” he said. “I’m glad I caught you. I had an unusual visitor to my shop just the other day. He was an American, looked a lot like you only older. He gave me a strand made from some type of fur and asked me to make a wand core out of it. Just the core, mind you, not a full wand.”
He handed Kit a small wooden tube.
“He wanted you to have it. I’m not sure what the fur is but I tested it like I do all my products and I’ve never gotten such a pure magical reading before. He said you would find a good use for it.”
“Thank you,” Kit said.
“Well, I must be getting back to my shop. Good day to you.”

As Dumbledore escorted Ollivander away, Kit looked at the wand core.
“What is it?” Toshiro asked.
“I think,” Kit said with the beginnings of a grin, “it’s a gift from Dad.”

They joined the others in the entrance hall where the House Elves were carrying the luggage out to a black van with red racing stripe parked out front.
“I’m glad to see Swift Wind is recovered.” Kit said pointing to the van.
“Yes,” Dannon said looking only slightly less pale than Kit from his encounter with the Bane Sidhe. “But we both still need some recovering before we’ll be ready to race at Serra again.”

Fred and George Weasley came up to them chewing on candies.
“So going now are you?” Fred said.
“Yep,” Kit answered.
“It’s a real shame to see you go,” George said tossing a candy to Fred before popping another in his mouth.
“Yes, it’s been really exciting having you lot here,” Fred said around the candy.
“I guess you’ll just have to manage without us.”
“Oh we will,” George said tossing a candy at Kit who caught in with his teeth in mid air.
“Yes, I imagine you will,” Kit said around the candy as he chewed.

Kit turned to join the others when he suddenly froze, his hand shot to his head and the shadows rippled around him a second. He let out a series of growls that made Toshiro, Shippo and Hanako’s heads snap up. Then he screamed and fell to his knees. The shadows rippled around him some more as small yellow feathers appeared in his hair only to disappear again. He collapsed twitching and jerking to the floor as Toshiro rushed to his side. With a last gasping wheeze, a small yellow feather shot out of his mouth and he lay still. Toshiro leaned his ear down to his face.

“Oh my word!” Professor McGonagall said rushing up. “Someone get Madam Pomfrey at once.”
“There is no need,” Toshiro said gravely as he looked up from the still figure under him.
He turned a glaring stare at Fred and George.
“What did you do?” He demanded.
“It was just a joke,” Fred said mortified.
“A canary cream it was just supposed to make him grow feathers,” George croaked.
“Yes, not kill him.”

“I’m sure it wasn’t intentional,” McGonagall said.
The boys looked at her.
“We didn’t mean it, really.” They said together.
They felt a hand land on both their shoulders.
“Then in the future think about twice about using transformation magic on a natural shape shifter,” Kit said with a big grin on his face.
The boy’s jaws dropped.
“Gotcha,” Kit said and the boys broke out in hysterical laughter.

The McGonagall left with the boys in tow, obviously not satisfied to laugh off the incident.
“Kit,” Toshiro called.
Kit turned and froze in shock. In Toshiro’s hand were the remains of his rosary necklace.
“It broke during your ‘death throes’” Toshiro said.
Kit felt his neck.
“I don’t understand, I still feel it.”
“What?”
“The connection to Yuriko’s soul, it was part of the magic. Why do you think I never really tried to get rid of it?”
Kit remembered the strange dream he had when he was comatose. Yuriko’s spirit had removed the connection to the necklace and made it to his heart. When he had asked, Shippo remembered nothing so he had just assumed it was a dream but what if it wasn’t? Then he remembered the new connection to Shippo. He glanced over at the elder Kitsune. ‘Something makes me think Shippo Old Fox,’ Kit thought, ‘our future has gotten more interesting.’
