Solitude

Warnings: you should know these by now, it's the 23rd chapter already!
Alex Lied on the desk with Severus still inside of her. This time had been different. Severus had been gentle. He had looked at her in the gentlest, most caring look she’d ever seen. He had been completely open to her, and she had looked straight into his soul and saw the man he truly was. He was hurt, completely lost, alone, hopeful, and his love in his eyes for her was so strong she thought she might break from the weight of it all. He was resting between her breasts. She idly played with his hair as she realized what he had done. He had given himself completely to her. For the first time, they had made love. A tear escaped from her. He had given himself as a gift, and in turn took what she had always given him, and memorized it. He had said goodbye. She had seen it and recognized it for what it was. He slowly pulled himself up, avoiding her gaze. He started to clean himself up and get dressed, and she did the same.
“Please don’t do this Severus.” She sobbed. “Please don’t act like you don’t care. I know you do. Why must you always turn me away? I love you and I know you love me.”
“I don’t love you!”
“I know you do!!! How can you say that after we’ve made love?!”
“We didn’t ‘make love’ as you put it. We fuck. I don’t do it with you, I do it to you, there’s a difference. I’m tired of your silly school girl crush.”
“I know you don’t think that way! You even said you die a little more each day without me and asked how could you live without me!”
The silence in the room was deafening save Alex’s sobbing as Severus racked his brain trying to remember if and when he had said that. Oh…right…that night…
“I was drunk.” He sighed.
“But you meant it!”
She was right. And worse, she knew. He gave up, defeated. Shoulders slumped, he took a deep breath. “We cannot be Alex. I am old, you still have your whole life ahead of you. One day, you’ll wake up and realize that you’ve been trapped with me all that time, and you’ll despise me. I cannot give my heart to you for you to cut it up, devour it, and forget after you wake up from this dream that you’re living in.”
She knelt down in front of him and took his hands. “But that’s what you’re putting me through right now! It doesn’t have to be a dream, Severus! I’m in front of you, right now! Why can’t you see that what you want is right in front of you? Literally!”
“But I have taken you! And I’ve corrupted you! I’ve ripped your innocence from you!”
“And I forgive you!”
“We cannot-I cannot do this. And I do not deserve your compassion. I’ve lived too long alone, not used to the company of others. I cannot drag you into solitude also.”
“You wouldn’t be. I have friends, I can invite them out anytime. You may make a few friends along the way-“
“I like my solitude… You see, it just wouldn’t work!…Please leave me, just leave. Before I change my mind.”
“But I want you to-“
“I like my solitude.” The finality of his statement made Alex realize that no matter what she said, his mind was set.
“So be it, Severus.” She stood and straightened her robes. She bent over and kissed him on the lips one last time before heading for the door. Her hand on the doorknob, she turned. “Just know, that if you change your mind, I’m here, waiting…” She got no response. “Have a good night, Professor.” Willing the tears not to spill, she shut the door quietly. And Severus was, once again, in solitude.
Sorry it's so short, and there's been such a delay! I've moved (again) and school started, and then I got sick! But it's all ok now! If you like it, review it!
