Chapter Twenty-Two – Good News
Two months after Lucius’ incarceration, Olivia found out why the dementors were staying clear of Lucius. She woke up in her little room at the inn feeling ill and exhausted after a full night’s sleep. And she felt what she had completely missed with all the turmoil of Azkaban. She was pregnant again. Olivia took a day and consulted Dr. Bennett who confirmed the baby and told her she was two months along.
The following day Lucius was happy to see his wife back, and he determined to be resolute about not thinking about their surroundings. She stared at her handsome husband, trying to get enough courage to tell him. Lucius blinked at her, wondering why she was dragging her feet coming into the cell. He saw she was reluctant and he immediately began to feel guilty again.
Olivia felt his reaction and groaned. Now she was hurting him even more because of her cowardice. She stepped forward briskly into his arms, hugging him. “Let’s sit,” she said. Lucius was completely confused, but obligingly sat with her on the cot.
“The good news first,” Olivia said.
“There’s bad news?” worried Lucius.
“Uh, not really, it’s more about your point of view, I guess,” she said.
“Now you’re alarming me,” Lucius complained.
Olivia took a deep breath, “Lucius, we’re having a baby.”
“What? When? We haven’t… Oh. Before?” Lucius didn’t know how to feel. He was simultaneously elated and intensely sad. “I certainly do know how to take care of you, don’t I?” he said with sad sarcasm. He sagged back against the wall. “I don’t want you here while you’re pregnant. I can take care of you that much, anyway.” In an unconsciously contrary action, he pulled her back with him and tucked her up against his side.
“Nonsense,” Olivia replied. “The doctor said there is no problem with me coming here as long as I don’t wear myself out by overdoing things. And this place is as cozy as we can make it already.”
Lucius said, exasperated, “Cozy is not the point. This is no place for you now. It never was. I’ve been fooling myself in letting you come here.”
They argued their own views vociferously to the point where a dementor was attracted to them, but quickly dodged out again. They looked at each other in confusion until Lucius started laughing. “That’s why we haven’t been bothered by the dementors. I’d heard of the phenomenon a long time ago, but hadn’t put it together. Well, why would I, until you told me,” he smiled.
“Are you going to tell me anytime soon?” Olivia said sulkily, still recovering from their argument.
“Dementors are actually almost poisoned by the purity of an unborn mind. They can’t be near them without suffering the same way they make us suffer.” Lucius could see Olivia mustering for another go at their argument and he held up his hands in surrender. “I concede. You can continue visiting me, and our newest little Malfoy can protect his big, evil father.” He sighed, “But I still hate the idea.”
At length Lucius enquired, “Well, what is the bad news?”
“I may be feeling a little under the weather for a few months, but mostly in the mornings,” Olivia answered. “Not to worry, the doctor says it’s normal.”
Lucius groaned. He suspected his miserable toilet might not be up to her being sick, but his mood almost immediately started to lighten with the realization of his impending fatherhood.
The months marched on with Lucius reveling in his wife’s mushrooming belly and Olivia telling him she was starting to feel like a walking beachball. Predictably, he didn’t know what a beachball was. Her tiny size didn’t allow for a lot of growing space and she was sometimes cranky. Lucius was very protective of Olivia, but had started making love to her again since pregnancy was no longer an issue and it definitely relieved her cranky attitude. A double plus for him.
She found a small farmhouse near the fishing village and purchased it knowing she was never going to leave the area as long as Lucius was in Azkaban. She asked Minnie to come keep house and help her but she didn’t demand it. Minnie was happy to be asked and they set up the farmhouse for the coming baby. Her father visited regularly and also met with Lucius over business interests.
The only sad part was the absolute refusal by the Warden to let a baby on the premises. Olivia wanted to be able to bring their baby to visit Lucius after it was born. She also suggested that she have the baby in the prison infirmary so Lucius could be there. Giving birth in the prison horrified Lucius and he thought she was becoming unbalanced from her pregnancy to even suggest it. He wanted her in the safety of their manor or at least at St. Mungo’s Hospital when the time came. Her suggestion was firmly rebuffed by both Lucius and the Warden who said her magicell phones emphatically did not extend to those kinds of privileges.
Lucius wouldn’t even let her be at the prison for the last month and her doctor agreed with him.
“We can talk on your magicell devices,” Lucius allowed, “but that’s all. My child's safety is worth more than mine.”
And so Olivia had to acquiesce. She knew Lucius and the doctor had been right when in the last month it became difficult for her to move around. When her time came Minnie had barely brought the doctor to the farmhouse before Olivia became the mother of a beautiful little son with a hint of his father’s silver blonde hair. The doctor pronounced her and baby fine. He joked, “I think the birth was fast because there was no more room for him to stay any longer.”
Olivia called Lucius on the phone and said, “Congratulations, you have another son.” Lucius was overjoyed and the dementors didn’t come near him for a month because of the bad taste in their psyches from his happiness.
