Our Paths Cross Again

Chapter 20

Remus sat in his study at his cabin. Sirius was out on a mission with Harry and Ron. He was actually enjoying a peaceful evening when he heard a tapping at the window. He looked up and saw Severus’s raven. Remus sat down his book and walked over to the window. The raven flew in and landed on the window seal. Remus removed the letter. The raven flew over to the coffee table and began picking at a biscuit.

Lupin,

I need your help. Could you meet me at Hogwarts tomorrow evening at 10 in my classroom? I have a favor and you’re the only one who could help me with this particular situation. Please send word back with my raven.

Severus

Remus was interested. What situation could Severus possibly need his help. And why so late. Remus grabbed a piece of parchment and wrote back. Telling Severus he would be there. He gave the letter to the raven who immediately flew out the opened window.

The next morning at breakfast Severus’s raven returned. Hermione was in the Room of Requirement. She was going to work out some aggressions. Severus smiled as he read Remus’s reply.

“How is Hermione?” Minerva asked.

“She’s fine Minerva.” Severus answered.

“Severus, I don’t mean to sound like an old mother hen, but I’m worried about her. I know she will never be the Hermione she was as a student, but please help her heal from whatever demons she’s battling.” Minerva pleaded.

“I’m trying Minerva.” Severus said.

Severus finished his breakfast and headed off for his classes. All day he was teaching. Hermione spent all morning working out. She made an appearance at lunch and looked much better than she had at breakfast.

“Have a good workout?” Severus asked.

“Yes. It felt good to take out my feeling on a punching bag.” Hermione answered.

“Well, if you even need a human punching bag, you know where to find me.” he said with a smile.

Hermione gave a quiet giggle.

“Oh, I’m meeting Remus in my classroom tonight at ten. So I will join you in your sitting room after the meeting.” he said.

“I was actually going to turn in early tonight.” she replied.

“In that case, why don’t you stay in my rooms tonight and I will join you after the meeting.” he suggested.

“Something wrong?” she asked.

“No, I just need his advise on a personal project. He actually has very good knowledge on the project.” he answered.

“All right. You’re rooms it is.” she said.

For the rest of the day Severus taught and Hermione read. She was very relaxed. It had been a long time since she had felt so relaxed and she was going to take full advantage of it.

Instead of eating in the Great Hall, Severus and Hermione had dinner in his rooms. They were laying in front of the fireplace feeding each other their dinner. The scene caused Hermione to laugh.

“What’s so funny Madame?” Severus asked.

“If someone had told me six years ago that I would be here in love with you, let alone feeding you dinner in front of a comfy fire, I would have hexed them into the next century.” Hermione answered.

Severus began laughing as well. After dinner they just laid in front of the fire. Hermione had her head resting on his chest with her left hand resting over his heart. Severus was playing idly with a strand of her hair.

“I love you Hermione.” he said.

“And I love you Severus.” she said with a smile.

Severus leaned over and kissed her. They just laid their kissing gently. After thirty minutes Hermione gave a yawn. Severus shooed her off to his bedroom. It was ten minutes before Remus would arrive. He got up and went into his classroom. At exactly ten Remus knocked on the door and entered.

“Good evening Lupin.” Severus greeted.

“Good evening Severus. You wanted to see me?” Remus asked as he took a seat on the desk in front of Severus’s desk.

“Yes. What I’m about to tell you doesn’t leave this room. Understood?” Severus replied.

“Understood.” Remus said.

“Okay. Hermione and I are in love. You know that.” Severus said.

“Yes. What’s that got to do with me?” Remus asked.

“She is having a hard time fully trusting me with her heart. The night before last she showed me a few of her memories. I promised her I would not tell anyone what I saw and I won’t. It’s because of those memories that she can’t fully trust me.” Severus explained.

“And?” Remus asked.

“I need to show her that I love her unconditionally and that I won’t hurt her. That’s what she’s afraid of. The problem is I have no idea how to do that. I know you help Potter when he was trying to win Lily’s heart. Now I’m asking for your help with Hermione.” Severus answered.

“Hmm. Okay. When are you planning on doing this?” Remus questioned.

“Saturday. I know Hermione’s not fond of Valentine’s Day and neither am I. But It seems like the perfect time. I just want something that will show her what I feel.” Severus said.

“Okay. I think I have the perfect thing. Do you think you can keep Hermione out of your rooms for the day?” Remus asked.

“Yes. That shouldn’t be so hard.” Severus said.

“Perfect. On Saturday, leave me access to your rooms and I will take care of this. All you have to do is keep Hermione away until dinner. And don’t have dinner in the Great Hall. I will take care of that as well. Plus you have to trust me. I won’t go overboard, I promise. It will be perfect. For both of you.” Remus said with a smile.

“And you promise not to tell anyone? Especially Albus or Minerva. I know that they know, but they’re keeping it quiet. It will be Hermione’s decision when we actually tell everyone.” Severus asked.

“You have my word.” Remus answered.

“Will you need any money?” Severus asked.

“Yeah. About ten galleons will cover it.” Remus replied.

Severus pulled out his money bag and handed the whole thing to Remus. Remus tried to argue, but Severus told him use what he needed and keep the rest or he would curse Remus into a flubberworm. Reluctantly Remus accepted. The two bid each other good night. Remus left and Severus headed for bed.

He entered the room. He found Hermione sound asleep. He smiled softly. He undressed, extinguished the candles and climbed in with her. He pulled her into his arms and drifted off to sleep. He knew Remus would come through. After all, Remus had never let anyone down before.
