Saving Hermione
“What’s Hermione doing here?” Severus asked.
“There was an attack on her house.” Harry told Severus dully. “Her parents are dead, and she’s dying. Lucius thinks there’s something that can save her, he went to find it.”
Shacklebolt entered from the apparition chamber. “Here’s something else to twirl your brains around. The wand signatures match, meaning that the same person who attacked Molly is the one who murdered the Grangers.”
Lucius came up behind them, saying, “That lends support to my theory on why this happened. But I’ll explain later. If we’re going to save Hermione, we’ll have to move fast. Motioning them to follow, he warded Hermione’s door. They could always obliviate the Healer later.
He shoved Severus down on the bed next to Hermione. “Petrificus Totalis!” To the others, he said, “If he moves, it could ruin it. I can’t take chances.” He used a slicing spell to make a small cut in Hermione’s arm, then an identical one in Severus’s. Uncorking the potion, he poured some into the cuts, then bound their wrists together. Hermione’s breathing, which had been rapid and shallow, became deep and even, signifying she had fallen into a natural sleep.
Lucius smiled and unbound them, picking Hermione up and carrying her to a soft chair he had conjured in the corner. “She needs physical contact for the bond to work, but Severus is too weak right now.”
“Y-you BOUND them?” Fudge squeaked in horror.
“Essentially, but in a way that has never been tried before. This,” he said, holding up the vial, was the last potion I made for Voldemort.” Ignoring Harry’s gasp, he continued as if he hadn’t heard him. “Voldemort was concerned about the orphans that would be left after the war. This potion creates a parent-child bond. His plan was to farm them out to loyal families to raise. The bond, in this case, breaks the curse her intended killer placed on her. Now, when the man in the next room dies, she will not die with him, as this bond has overridden the bond with him. They are no longer connected.”
The healer spoke. Everyone had almost forgotten he was there. “Could this theoretically be used to create a bond in a child with an attachment disorder?”
“I suppose so. Why?” Lucius was curious as to where this question was leading.
“We have a girl downstairs in the pediatric ward who could use this. She watched her parents die, her godparents, and then her foster parents. She’s afraid to get attached to anyone, fearing they will be taken away too.”
“We’d need to find a suitable parent candidate.”
“I’ll do it. If Severus can adjust to parenthood, so can I.”
“Sev had Molly.”
“I’ve put in another marriage bid. I feel since I got her into this, I had the obligation to provide Rosmerta with some sort of choice. I don’t know who she’s chosen yet.”
“I’ll have to make more potion, it will take a couple of days.”
Finally, Hermione began to wake. ‘Where am I?’ she thought. ‘And why is Lucius holding me, of all people?’
“Welcome back.” Lucius smiled at her.
“Hermione! You’re ok!” Harry looked as if his knees would buckle with relief.
“Harry! How did you get here?” Hermione smiled, but even that hurt.
“The bastard who did this went after Molly next. Harry avada’d him.”
“So did Lucius, but don’t tell anyone.” Fudge stepped into view.
One of the other healers came in. “Here are the testing supplies you requested, Mr. Malfoy. You all can see Mrs. Snape in about ten minutes, they’re moving her into a room for the night for observation.”
“And the baby?” Severus’ heart was in his throat.
“She’ll be alright. Molly will deliver early, though. I recommend you remain at Hogwarts near Madam Pomfrey. No Floo, no stairs, no running, minimize stress, and she’ll have to teach sitting down when she can. If the guy had hit her with a second curse we may well have lost them both. Now, Lucius, you said you had an idea what caused this?”
Lucius responded by picking up the test kit. He took some blood from Hermione and some from Severus.
‘Bloody Vampire!’ Severus thought.
“Lucius, can we let him loose now?” Shacklebolt asked.
“Sure. The hard part is over with.” Lucius touched his wand to the test paper. It turned a soft pink.
“Congratulations, Severus, it’s a Niece.”
