Chapter Twenty - Amends
Olivia didn’t know what to do. If they were to move forward past this gaping hole in their marriage, Lucius had to help her do it. All she knew was she still loved him and didn’t want to lose him. If she could forgive him for this, would he ever forgive her for her own deceit? She had never confessed her empathic nature, fearing to lose him. Was it now too late? Would the added strain of her confession break their marriage apart forever? She was at a loss. Taking the cowardly way, she decided not to tell him just yet.
She just said simply, “Lucius, I love you. Everything else is secondary as long as you love me too. Do you?” Olivia had never heard the words from him although she had been reading his strong emotional feelings for her for some time.
Lucius did love her but was ambivalent about telling her so in the present circumstances. He was unhappy and ashamed with her practically living with him in prison and being subjected to the horrid, fetid little room. He had promised himself he would provide her with the elegancies of life and instead he had nothing to offer but a jailbird husband and a noisome stone cell.
Olivia could feel the wash of hesitancy, guilt, love, anger, and despair in her bondmate but she didn’t know what he was thinking to cause all those riotous feelings. She soothed sadly, “Never mind, Lucius. Never mind.”
Lucius pulled her into his arms and held her, burying his face in her curls. “Ah Livvy,” he whispered, “I do love you. You make me crazy. I always want you and need you.” He settled them down onto the cot, “It’s the situation I hate. I have a hard time getting past this reality. Every day I wake up and become conscious of where I am all over again. This cage, the smell, and worst of all, you having to see it. Your presence here shames me, but is also the only thing holding me together.” He mused, “I haven’t seen the dementors lately, though. Maybe things are getting a bit better.”
Olivia cuddled against Lucius, hope welling up inside at his words. She knew he loved her and now she had the words. She had access to his entire empire of wealth, but she had what she truly wanted right on the cot. A frisson of fear swept through her. She just hoped Lucius would love her enough to accept her extra little ‘mind quirk’. Maybe her constant skirmishes with the dementors had banished them. She hoped so.
