~Chapter twenty: Mothers and muggings~

Isis went to dinner with a feeling of dread growing in her mind. She continually looked up at Professor McGonagall to see if she had to go yet. Finally around seven Isis was escorted to a small room off of the Great Hall. Isis sat on a low armchair until her mother arrived looking very grim.
"Isis Rose Lupin! You are in so much trouble." Her mother’s voice called. But as always Isis had developed a sudden and keen interest in her shoes.
"For what?"
Isis could feel her mother’s frustration fasten like a noose around her neck. "For what? Isis you know perfectly well what you and that boy did."
"His name is Sirius and we didn’t do anything."
"You were naked."
"Even Jerry Fallwell has been naked mom!"
"You are in no position to talk back to me Isis. Dumbledore is just too kind to expel you…"
"Or it might be because there’s no proof." Isis said starring at a brick three inches to the right of her mother. "And do you know why there’s no proof?"
"Enlighten me." Persephone said dryly.
Isis stared hard at her mother. "Because nothing happened!" she whispered urgently. She stood up, "Nothing!" Isis crossed to the door. "I’m going to finish my dinner and do my homework. And maybe just to spite you, do my boyfriend!"
"Isis, you are too much like your father sometimes." Persephone said.
"Good." Isis retorted. "I’d rather be a little like him, rather then a lot like you." Isis took a deep breath. "He died because of me. I was the one who didn’t use any discretion. Then you made me run away when I should have helped him! Why didn’t you let me?"
Persephone sat down in the chair Isis had been in. "Do you know why Dodmorderen is hunting you?"
Isis shrugged.
"Because you are more then just a princess of our people, but you’re a blend of them, Human, dryad, elvish, and you’re a mage. You are what Dodmorderen fears the most. You aren’t a pure-blood anything, but you have bourocratic power and a powerful magic."
Isis glared at her mother. "I don’t have any power! I don’t want it!"
Persephone looked at her daughter. "Honey you have it whether or not you want it. There will come a time when I won’t be around and you’ll have to take the throne or it will go to the stewards."
"I don’t want the throne." Isis said mildly.
"Isis, your father was a good man. It’s not your fault that he died." Persephone put her arm around her daughter. "You mean so much to me Isis. I don’t want to lose you for anything. Don’t give up part of yourself either. Sweetie you’re only fifteen."
Isis hung her head. "But I want to… so badly…"
Persephone shook her head. "Isis do you know how old I was when I had you?"
"No."
"I was a teenager, by elven standards anyway. I love you so much, but I wish I had been a bit older. I know you love Sirius, but give yourself some time."
Isis smiled. "So your not mad?"
"I am angry, but if you say nothing happened I have no choice but to believe you. Go finish your dinner, do your homework, but please be mindful."
"I will." Isis said.
* * *
On Saturday Isis and Sirius were escorted to Hogsmead where the Potters and the Lupins were waiting for them.
"Hello Isis." Mrs. Potter said politely as she joined her aunt and uncle.
"Hello Mrs. Potter. Mr. Potter," Isis replied.
Lyn Lupin greeted Sirius with a hug.
"How are we getting home?" Isis asked her aunt once she had retrieved her things from the enchanted dolly that followed with her and Sirius’s belongings.
"Were taking the knight bus." Lyn said. "Mr. and Mrs. Potter have agreed to have tea with us and all four of us will have a conversation with you and Sirius."
Isis slumped.
George Lupin put his arm around his wife, "Dumbledore believes you two and so do we. It’s just an issue of the future. We care about both of you and we just want you to know that… erm… well…"
"... That there are consequences?" Sirius added.
"Precisely Sirius." David Potter added.
David then threw out his wand hand and with a bang a very purple bus came to meet them.
Sirius recognized the bus immediately. He remembered all too well the ride from London to Edinburgh. He hauled himself and his trunk onto the bus and saw that the brass bedsteads had been changed to low mismatched armchairs. The chairs were placed rather haphazardly and Sirius had a suspicious feeling that it was due impart to the way the bus was handled. Isis clambered on after him and settled herself in an armchair near the back.
Sirius sat down next to her, "Don’t get too comfortable." He advised.
Isis had only gotten a chance to look at him questioningly when the bus roared out of Hogsmead. Isis had been thrown onto the floor and her chair had fallen soon after landing on her calves. Sirius got down and picked the chair up from her legs and propped it up right. Isis on the other hand chose to stay on the floor. Sirius thought she was slightly mad until the bus stopped again and he was thrown and Isis had managed to stay where she was and keep the chair from falling on her. Isis just smiled at him while he picked himself back up.
"What are you grinning at?" He asked jovially.
"You." Isis responded in an almost dreamy tone. "The floor is more comfortable if you don’t want to fall all over the place."
Sirius slid out of his chair and settled on the floor next to Isis and found that it was more comfortable. He found that he only slid a few inches and his body weight kept the chair from falling on him. He looked at Isis with a renewed sense of respect, but Isis didn’t notice. She was picking at her robes distractedly.
"What’s wrong?" Sirius asked.
Isis looked up at him with mild surprise etched in her face. "Huh?"
"I asked what’s wrong. You don’t seem all there." Sirius said putting his hand to her forehead.
Isis pushed his hand away and looked at him darkly before continuing in hushed tones. "Have you noticed that Severus has been lurking around a lot more then usual lately?"
Sirius shifted his weight. "No not really, but then again I don’t keep tabs on old Snievlly."
Isis heaved a heavy sigh. "Maybe I’m just being paranoid, but I swear he’s everywhere."
"Honey O.W.L.s are coming up. All the fifth years are in the Library or the Great Hall all the time. I’m sure its just coincidence."
Isis smiled. "Yeah you’re right. I’m sure its just coincidence."
