Saving Harry
2. Saving Harry
The first weeks passed quickly and it was Christmas. Harry was now and then curled up outside Severus`private chambers and they had settled into a routine that the potion master would find him and invite him to have breakfast. The stories Severus heard about the muggles which had cared for Harry made him more than angry. But he kept his thoughts to himself and that for a good reason. He personally knew that an abused and neglected child would react badly to anger in any form.
Harry turned out to be a bright student especially in defense against the dark arts. Not that Severus was surprised. He simply encouraged the boy to dive into his studies.
On Christmas eve the remaining professors and students had a feast in the great hall and afterwords they sat together and talked. Harry was the only Slytherin staying for the holidays. Both walked down into the dungeons in comfortable silence.
“Would you like to have some pumpkin juice before you retire to your dormitory, Mr Potter?“ Snape asked.
Harry simply nodded and Severus motioned him to sit down near the fireplace. When he returned he had a glass of firewhiskey for himself and pumpkin juice for the boy. He gracefully sat down in his usual arm chair. Harry nipped from the juice and smiled.
“Thank you.“
Severus simply tilted his head and let the firewhiskey warm him from the inside. Harry had finished his juice and leaned back into the cushions of the sofa. His eyes were fluttering as he tried to stay awake.
“Professor?“ He sounded sleepy.
“Hmm.“
“Happy Christmas.“
Snape smiled into his glass. “Happy Christmas Harry.“
The days came and went and after Harry had found the Philosopher´s stone, it was the last day of school. Severus found Harry once again in the hallway and invited him in.
“Professor? Sir?“ Harry was chewing on his lips.
“What is it Harry?“ Snape shifted the focus of his attention to the boy.
“I was wondering if I could...“ he trailed off.
“If you could what?“ Severus kept his voice even.
“If I could write you a letter?“ Harry lowered his eyes.
Severus nodded. “Of course you can. I will be at home but Hedwig should know where to find me.“
Harry´s eyes blazed with delight. “I am sure she will.“
The first week of the summer vacation passed without a word from Harry and Severus had to admit he was worried. He enjoyed being away from school as if he could dress more casually, spending his time either reading or exchanging letters with colleagues about various topics.
Therefor when Hedwig appeared in front of the window he was relieved. He let her in and gave her a treat before impatiently ripping the parchment open.
Dear Professor Snape,
I am doing alright I guess. Would you believe that this is the first time I was allowed out the cupboard under the stairs? I am sorry I have not written earlier but I was busy with working in the garden. I hope your summer is better than mine. And I am really looking forward to Hogwarts.
Yours, Harry
Snape felt once again anger well up in his chest. He placed the parchment on his desk and went into his living room.
Accessing the floo he spat: “Hogwarts, the headmaster´s office!“
Dumbledore´s face appeared in the flames.
“Severus. How can I help you?“
“I am fetching Harry now!“
The headmaster nodded. „Do that. And oh will you make sure he gets his things for the next school year?“
After a very curt nod he ended the connection and apparated to that blasted muggle suburb. He sneered as he took in the repetitive landscape and walked up to one door. It had been eleven years ago when he had approached the same door and considered to ring the bell. But instead he simply had apparated away knowing that Harry was safe here.
Not this time. He had spent enough time here to trigger the powerful wards of Lilly´s love and he would make sure that Harry would celebrate this year´s birthday. He rang the bell and put on his most intimidating expression.
An ugly muggle woman opened the door.
“Yes?“
“I want to see Harry Potter.“ He sneered and rejoiced in the literal step back of Petunia Dursley.
“There is no person of that name living here.“
Snape pushed open the door. “Listen muggle, you do not want to anger me. Where is Harry?“
Petunia pointed to a cupboard under the stairs. A quick unlocking spell opened the door and Severus peered inside. The boy was sleeping on a mattress and it took a little nudge to wake him up.
“Sir.“ His face lit up with joy.
Severus simply extracted his hand. “Come with me Harry.“ The boy nodded and gripped his hand tightly. The potion master accioed Harry´s trunk and Hedwig. Without another look at Petunia Dursley he apparated both of them away.
Harry enjoyed himself at Snape's house and spent most of his time either studying with Severus or playing in the garden. The days passed and it was Harry´s birthday. At the breakfast table Harry indulged in warm toast with strawberry marmalade. He was humming with pleasure and his feet were bouncing back and forth.
Severus sipped his tea. “We will be visiting Diagon Alley today. You need to get your supplies for the next school year.“
Harry nodded emphatically. After finishing breakfast they used the floo to the leaky cauldron. As soon as they stepped into Diagon Alley Harry stared around himself trying to take everything in. They got his books and then Severus steered them into the direction of Madame Malkin´s.
“You need some clothes.“ He gently pushed Harry into the shop. Inside Madame Malkin welcomed them.
“Ah Professor Snape. I have been expecting you. And this must be Harry Potter. It is a pleasure to meet you.“
Harry smiled at her. “It´s nice to meet you too.“
The next hour was spent with Harry trying on all kinds of robes and when the two wizards left the shop, Severus was pleased. He had a feeling that next school year things would improve for Harry.
AN: I usually avoid writing Hogwarts' setted stories I was challenged by a friend to write this story and it turned out longer than aniticipated. Since we have holidays in the next three weeks I figure I can finish this little gem. Consider this my holiday gift.
