The Tale of the Halfblood Prince 2
Hermione awoke the next morning, thinking that she had the strangest dream ever.
Then her hands went to her throat in rememberance of last night, and she gasped. There was a metal choker on her throat.
Ginny woke up yawning at Hermione's gasp, then spotting the choker, she let out a loud gasp. Without talking to Hermione or
going over to her bed to say anything, Ginny rocketed out of her bed and shot downstairs, calling for all the Weasleys.
"Mom, Dad, Ron, Bill, Percy, George--oh no!"
All the Weasleys got out of bed with groans and beds creaked all over the house as they came out into the living room downstairs.
"Hermy, Hermione, our Hermione has gotten the choker of the bond. Someone's bonded her last night!"
Hermione had followed Ginny into the kitchen and now stared at the redheaded girl in complete confusion.
'What bond,' she thought.
"Oh my, by Merlin's beard, it is the bonding choker," cried Mrs. Weasley.
Mr. Weasly was silent, staring at Hermione with a sympathetic gaze. All the Weasleys gathered around her and began chattering confusedly.
Ron was another exception like Mr. Weasley, silent in his gaze.
Hermione turned to him amidst the confusion, looking for support. To her surprise, Ron turned angrily away, and she thought she could see tears in his
bloodshot eyes.
Lost, Hermione turned to Mrs. Weasley who hugged herand with her free hand got a chair out of thin air for her to sit.
Settling down around Hermione on suddenly appearing chairs, the Weasleys explained to Hermione that her life had changed, completely by the looks of it, because
of some silvery metal choker on her throat.
Hermione skipped breakfast. She cried herself to a nap back in Ginny's room. Ginny joined her worried family downstairs to leave Hermione in peace, if that was possible.
Apparently, an ancient charm had been summoned on the behalf of some powerful--as the spell's powers were drawn from the wizard's own supply of magic, the involved wizard had to be above
average in his powers--wizard. The dwelling of the wizard was the initiator of the spell, and the house elf, the messenger. The choker was a physical manifestation of the spell itself. Another elf
of the dwelling would have been dispatched to the wizard as well, and on his finger would be a ring of the bond. In a sense, the ancient magical dwelling of the powerful wizard was playing matchmaker to
the wizard and the witch to ensure that the inhabitants of the house do not die out.
To Hermione's anguished consternation, the spell could not be revoked, unless death did them apart. Hermione let out a hollow laugh at the literally binding marriage that she was now being forced into.
"Until death--" she laughed.
Downstairs, Mrs. Weasley was comforting Ron who had opened his mouth, finally breaking the shocked silence, into loud portests of what had just happened. He loved her, Ron shouted. She was his friend
and lover, and never meant for another.
Just then the doorbell rang, and with a sigh Mr. Weasley went to get the door. The wizard should have gotten his own insigna of the bonding now and awaited his bonded bride. As to the bride's whearabouts,
the elves undoubtedly told him.
Mr. Weasley opened the door and found none other than a very haggard looking Severus Snape.
He paused for a moment, saying, "You know Severus, now may not be a good time for--" until his eyes landed on the silver ring that Severus held out to him angrily.
"I presume you know about the ancient magic of Avada Bondavra. I have been sent here on behalf of Spinner's End for the witch who will bear my heir and thus continue the place. Hail longevity," Severus ran through
the ritualistic lines with the utmost disdain that he could muster in the situation.
Mr. Weasley blinked, then led Severus into the house. The Weasleys grew silent at the unexpected guest then the silence was broken by Ron who burst out cursing as he had spotted the ring.
Even Hermione who had been wrapped up in her woes heard the upheavel and came downstairs. Slowly, walking down the steps, he spotted Severus Snape and wondered if he was here to help her break the magical bond before
some strange wizard came to whisk her away. She did not notice the ring until her choker began to glow silvery bright, and it grew tighter around her neck and--she fainted in the arms of Severus Snape.
"The bonding shall be completed," muttered Severus, and saw to his relief that the choker loosened again.
"You duddering fools, someone bring her water," he said.
When Hermione awoke, she again almost fainted as she saw what was now attached to her throat. A thin, fine chain now glowed from her choker all the way to Severus' ring. The chain had appeared as soon as Severus had declared
that the bonding shall be completed.
"Professor Snape?" Hermione spoke, and she dead fainted again as the weight of reality hit her.
