Growing Up

‘‘VERNON’’ Petunia screamed as she saw the child on her doorstep. That’s when she saw one of her nosey neighbours and quickly whisked the child inside.

‘‘What is it pet?’’ Vernon asked ‘‘I heard you scream’’

‘‘This!’’ Petunia said in disgust holding the child away from her body like he was a disease.

‘‘Where did that come from?’’ asked Vernon suspiciously

‘‘It’s one of my freak sisters abominations’’ Petunia said

‘‘Well get rid of it’’ Vernon stated

‘‘We can’t. They expect it to stay here. We have to keep it’’ Petunia said in defeat.

‘‘Fine’’ Vernon said coldly ‘‘Put the freak in the cupboard under the stairs and then we’ll have breakfast with our son’’

‘‘Of course honey’’ Petunia said is a sickly sweet voice ‘‘Just let me get rid of this thing and then I’ll get our precious Dudders and we can all have breakfast’’

***************************************************************************

As the weeks passed since that fatal morning. It only got worse.

Everything Harry came with was taken from him. Everything was destroyed and discarded, because the Dursley’s didn’t want any of the freakishness off the freaks things to spread to them or their precious Dudders. Even the pictures of his family were taken and burned.

As all this happened the Dursley’s were receiving money to spend on Harry, but instead bought a new car, bone china, silverware, anything that would make them look more important. They even sent Dudley to the most posh nursery they could find, where all the rich children went.

However the nursery didn’t last long. Dudley was fed child sized portions and Petunia saw it as them trying to starve her baby, but what ended up leaving the nursery was Dudley attacking the other children and when it was called to the Dursley’s attention, they said that the other children must be bullying him and defended whatever Dudley did, but Dudley was kicked out of the nursery when he carried on with his behaviour and got worse and the nursery decided he was too dangerous to be around the other children and even the staff to be around. This just made things worse for little Harry and he was blamed for Dudley being dismissed from the nursery and his food was taken away for three days and he cried for food and was hit round the face by Vernon and he didn’t cry for the rest of his punishment.

Harry learnt in those few weeks that he should stay out of his Uncle Vernon’s way and stay as far away from Dudley as possible. He tried playing with Dudley once and not only did Dudley bite, kick and hit him, his Aunt Petunia put him in, what he now called, his cupboard and when Uncle Vernon got home, he got a beating for being mean to Dudley.

***************************************************************************

He was told his parents never wanted him and that they gave him to them and kept his older sister and even his twin brother, but didn’t want him. That he was too much of a freak even to freaks like them that his own parents and siblings didn’t want him. He was told of how his parents showered their children with gifts, but they saw him as a burden and got rid of him instead. He didn’t know what to do, to make them come back to him, but the Dursley’s said if he did everything they told him to they might come and get him, if they saw he had a use and so Harry did whatever they said.

Over the years he dreamed of someone coming to get him and did everything he could think of so he’d be wanted. He did his chores as best he could, he got good grades, but quickly learnt to appear less intelligent than Dudley, he was polite, when needed and quiet as a mouse, but still no one came, no one wanted him.

***************************************************************************

As the years passed, little Harry was blamed for more things and was beaten and starved. His uncle lost a contract and it was Harry’s fault. Dudley got in trouble and it was his fault. His aunt wasn’t invited to a neighbours party, when most of the neighbourhood was and it was his fault. Through all these faults he had, he just seemed to have more at every turn. It was never ending and through all this they never once said his name. He didn’t even know his name because all he was ever called was boy or freak. But he had to go to school, it would look too suspicious if he didn’t and they didn’t want people nosing around, but the Dursley’s refused to call the freak Harry.

The Dursley’s had read the letter that had come with Harry, explaining his name, Harry for James’s father and Lucas for Lily’s grandfather on her mothers side. They didn’t want the freak to have a name that came from freaks, but they couldn’t change his name completely and they couldn’t change his last name so they called him Lucas Potter, Luke for short, so at least his first name came from normal people.

(Harry will be called Lucas/Luke from now on)

***************************************************************************

At school he was fed good food, as much as he wanted, but from eating hardly anything at the Dursley’s, he ate hardly anything at school, while his cousin got bigger and bigger. However from eating more food he went from once looking like skin and bones to now looking more healthy. It destroyed all the Dursley’s work, to make him weak or so they thought. Even given more food he refused to eat. The Dursley’s taught him freaks weren’t meant to eat like normal people and he followed their rules wherever he was because he knew Dudley would tell on him if he disobeyed and he would be beaten worse. So he didn’t eat unless told to and gave his cousin all the food he wanted, which meant he usually gave most of his food to Dudley, if not all of it.

The school noticed how thin he was getting and informed the Dursley’s and although they tried to sweep it under the rug, the school didn’t fall for it and the Dursley’s had to agree to Lucas getting counselling or be looked down upon. The counsellor talked to him about it and Lucas started to eat more, but the damage had been done and although he gained some weight he never ate as much as a normal child would and from being constantly starved by the Dursley’s over the years, his body was malnourished and he had stunted growth, so he was smaller than everyone in his year and most children, two year younger and when he was stressed or scared or something new happened that effected him he would start eating less, until he felt comfortable again.

***************************************************************************

By five he was learning how to cook, while the other Potter children were learning to fly. He learnt to be quiet, while they learnt to play pranks. He learnt no one cared, while they learnt they were loved and cherished. He learnt he was freak, while they learnt they were special. He was surrounded by hate and pain, while the Potter children were surrounded by joy and love. He was cold and scared in his cupboard alone at night, while they were tucked up in their nice warm beds, knowing their family was close by. He was hungry and refused food, while they were full and allowed more. He had nothing, while they had everything. He worked to live, while they played for fun. He prayed for someone to come, while they prayed for more toys. He dreamed of them, while they forgot him. He lost hope day by day, while they had fun minute by minute. He was forgotten and neglected, while they were remembered and worshipped.

And as the years passed he lost faith that they would ever come for him and he dreamed of them less and less, until they were just strangers to him that didn’t want him. He lost faith in anyone ever wanting him and withdrew into his own world of books, he found at the Dursley’s and when he started school, he turned to the books for everything he needed. He pretended to be characters in the books and went on adventures, but he always had to come back to the world where no one cared for him, where no one wanted him.

***************************************************************************

And the cycle of abuse and neglect went on and on everyday with no end in sight.

***************************************************************************

Then the day came. His Hogwarts letter appeared.

MR. H. POTTER,
The Cupboard under the Stairs,
4, Privet Drive,
Little Whinging,
SURREY

But he wasn’t H. Potter, he was Lucas Potter, so the letter couldn’t be his.

Or so he thought.
