Chapter 1 - June 5, 2006 10 a.m.
Draco Malfoy opened his front door slowly, expecting to encounter a hostile force on the other side. What was actually there was more surprising, and more than a little unnerving. Harry Potter was standing there, grinning madly at him.
Harry’s eyes lit up when he saw Draco, “Good morning, Malfoy. Happy birthday.”
“Potter,” Draco inclined his head civilly, “To what do I owe this ….. honor?”
“May I come in? I need to speak with you about something private.”
Draco didn’t move, “What are you talking about, Potter?”
“Professor Snape.”
“Is in Azkaban.”
“And it’s killing him.”
“So? He was a Death Eater.”
“So were you. And besides, you know as well as I do that he was feeding you information for the Order. The Ministry wouldn’t let me keep you both out of prison. Not after he killed Professor Dumbledore. I decided to pick my battles. You went free and he got a reduced sentence.” Harry looked around apprehensively, “May I please come in? There are things that must be said and I know the Ministry has someone watching me.”
Draco opened the door in exasperation, “Oh, very well. Come in.”
Harry smiled again, “Thanks.”
Draco led Harry to the library and was pleased when he saw the other man’s eyes goggle. “Wow.”
Draco sat behind his desk and motioned for Harry to take the chair opposite him. “Now, how do you know Severus is dying?”
“We’re in contact. We write about once a week, and I have special authorization from the Ministry to see him once a month. He never says it, but prison life is killing him, slowly.”
“I understand, but why come to me about it? I have no authority to change his circumstances.”
“I spoke with the Ministry. They have, very reluctantly, agreed to allow him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest, provided I become his full time jailor. Keep him in line and all that.”
“And this has what to do with me?” Draco was becoming impatient. It was all a good story, but he couldn’t see how any of this affected him.
“The Ministry has agreed to allow one other person to reside with us as a Potions assistant to him.”
“Potions Assistant?”
“The main reason the Ministry has agreed to allow him out is that he believes he has come up with a way to modify the Wolfsbane potion to actually cure Lycanthropy. We all know I’m not much more than a joke at potions, especially around Severus. Besides I cannot effectively be his warden if I’m his assistant too.”
“What did Severus say when you told him you would be asking me?”
“It was his idea, you were his first choice. The Ministry doesn’t like it, but I pointed out to them that you were on our side in the end, both of you. And I would be just as effective against both of you as I would against one. Which is to say very little, in my own opinion.”
“What do you and Severus speak about?”
Harry blinked at the rapid change of subject, “I beg your pardon?”
Draco sighed, “You said you are in contact with him quite often, what do you discuss?”
Harry’s brow furrowed in confusion, “I don’t see that it really matters, but he usually tells me what his new theories are on certain potions, and I give him news about what’s going on in the world. Why?”
“So you don’t really talk about anything personal?”
“Severus is hardly the type of man to inspire confidences.”
“I don’t think you quite realize what you’re signing yourself up for, Potter.” Draco smirked.
“I don’t understand.”
“Severus can be quite prickly in a… domestic setting. It goes far beyond his bad temperament and overabundant pride. You may be the one the Ministry thinks is in charge of the house and situation, but Severus is too dominant by half to ever take orders, especially from a former student. Then there is the matter of his... social peculiarities.”
“I understand he won’t be inclined take orders, but my role in all this is pretty simple, I’m only there to make sure he doesn’t attempt to leave the house or contact old Death Eater buddies. So long as he doesn’t try anything funny then I am somewhat superfluous. You and he are the ones that will be doing all the real work. You will also be the only one allowed to leave the premises, at least in the beginning.”
“Will I, I don’t think that will do any of us much good then. It was made perfectly clear to me when the war ended that while I may have ended on the side of the Order, I was still a Death Eater, and would never be trusted or welcomed in the Wizarding world again.” Draco said coolly, it still galled him that he had been treated as a common criminal.
“What did you mean ‘social peculiarities’?” Harry asked suspiciously.
“Oh, I think I’ll let you figure that part out on your own. It’s really not for me to divulge.”
“Still the same smug bastard I see.”
Draco’s grin was sharp, an unfamiliar glint in his eye, “Always, Potter. You’d do well to remember just what I am capable of, and just who Severus is. Caging a wolf does not mean he’s tamed.”
“Well that was nicely cryptic.” Harry sighed, ready to move on, “Yes or no, Malfoy?”
“For how long?”
“He will be delivered into my custody at noon the day after tomorrow. He will be my responsibility for four years, seven months, and thirteen days. At which time he will be set free, with certain restrictions.”
“And precisely where will we be residing for the next four and a half years?”
“I haven‘t decided yet. I have a cottage in Godric’s Hollow, or my godfather’s townhouse at Grimmauld Place.”
“I suppose Godric’s Hollow is a Wizarding community.”
“No, Godric‘s Hollow is completely Muggle. No one will know you there, but they all know me now. They won’t have any reason to dislike you or treat you badly, unless you give them one. It is a very small village, and the people and atmosphere are pleasant.”
“If you go to the cottage then I will agree to help.”
“The cottage is not very big, but the grounds are fairly extensive, and there is a large potion’s garden. If you would prefer Godric’s Hollow, then that is where we will go. I thought you’d rather be in London though.”
“London holds no diversions for me,” sighing wistfully Draco stood, “Very well, give me the coordinates and I will arrive at nine a.m. the day after tomorrow. I assume I will have a room to myself.”
“Of course, there are four bedrooms, and they‘re all fairly spacious. You may have your pick. Severus and I will choose from the remainder.”
“Very well, Potter. Was there anything else?”
Harry stood, pulled an envelope from his jacket pocket, and handed it to Draco, “Here are the coordinates, a ring that will allow you to pass through the wards, and a key to the front door. Owl me if you have any questions.”
“Thank you. I will see you in two days.” Draco stood and showed Harry out the door.
