CLASSES
In her first class there was only one open seat when she arrived, next to a young man with striking blond hair and an angry disposition.
“I’m sorry, but do you mind, there is no other seat.” She asked quietly. He was about to make a snide comment when he looked up at her. He was silenced by the sudden butterflies he found in his stomach. His breath was caught in his throat. He was utterly speechless; he could not find the words to describe the creature in front of him. He shook his head slowly. She sat down and hunched herself over putting her head down on her arms. He just watched her. Then out of nowhere the professor, a Professor Snape, went flying into the room.
“Open your textbooks to page 672.” He bellowed. Amber opened her book mindlessly and listened to him lecture. She caught a few words here and there, noting that he was talking about the fascupido amare potion. It was a potion to give you a look at who you was destined to be your partner. After a few moments she heard him ask a question, and she knew the answer.
“No one?” Snape sneered. Amber hesitantly raised her hand.
“Miss Thibodeau.”
“The answer is balm of gilead, sir.” Not even Hermione had had her hand raised for that one.
“How did you know that?”
“We did this in my school two years ago.”
“You did?”
“Yes, when I left we had just finished the veritaserum and were starting in on….” She left off when she remembered that the morphing potions they had started working on had been her father’s specialty. “….an advanced morphing potion.” She whispered. Snape was astonished, apparently this school in America was very much ahead of him, and she had to be at least a year and a half, if not two years ahead of the students in her class.
“Well then, Miss Granger, I think you have finally met your match. There is someone here who knows more than you.” Snape smirked and Hermione was excited. After her display of intelligence, Amber laid her head down again. On the outside, Draco kept his same indifferent look, but on the inside he was amazed at the intelligence of the young woman sitting to his right.
Up front Snape could not hide the amazement in his eyes at the appearance of this young girl. She would do well if she could get over the events of the past week. He began writing their assignment and pairs on the board. He decided to give his favorite student a wake up call.
“Um….hello!” Draco said poking her trying to get her to lift her head up and get started.
“I see it on the board, yes we’re partners and yes I know what to do. Now quit wetting your pants and let me finish reading the damn thing over again, as I said it was two years ago, I don’t have it memorized.” Amber whispered angrily. She couldn’t understand this young man beside her. She could feel the presence of the wall he put up around himself and she could not help but wonder what for. After she finished reading the passage she lifted her head up and pulled her hair back from her face into a ponytail. Then she looked at him.
“I need for you to go up there and get the ingredients. We need one adam and eve root, one sprig of mistletoe, and ounce of dream herbs, three tablespoons of balm of gilead, nine violet leaves and two cups of water.” She ordered him as she began to set up the cauldron. He had to make two trips to retrieve it all and when he brought the last of it he sat and looked at her with his arms crossed on his chest.
“Don’t look at me like that blond boy, start slicing the adam and eve root; we need ten pieces sliced to be precisely one eighth of an inch thick.” He was astonished for a moment at the change in her demeanor, but he noticed how into her work she was and just assumed potions must be her favorite subject.
They didn’t talk while they worked unless Amber was instructing Draco on what to do. When they finished their potion was exactly what it needed to be. Snape came by and saw her spooning it into vials. He took one and examined its color, consistency and odor. The crimson, watery, violet scented potion was perfect.
“Ten points to Slytherin and Gryffindor.” He sneered taking the vial with him. He reached the front of the classroom and held it up. “This is what it should look like, take note, especially you Longbottom. The class stared at the vial and then at their potions. Ron and Harry’s was a horrid pink color and Hermione and Neville’s had almost reached the proper consistancy, but somewhere Neville had waited too long. Not one group had completed it perfectly, it really was quite a difficult potion; unless you timed everything correctly you were bound to flub it up.
“….er…thank you, I needed a good grade in here.” Draco said quietly and quickly.
“Now class.” They all heard Snape announce. “Draco and Amber may use their own potion, but for the rest of you, I have vials for you to use. You are to each take a dose and note what you experience. For next class I want thirty-six inches of parchment describing in detail the effects of the fascupido amare potion. Now, get to work.”
Draco handed Amber one of their vials and they each drank them down. Amber remembered the feeling of dizziness and fuzziness expectant of this potion. She recalled what she had seen the last time she took it in her other class, she had seen a very faint figure standing in front of her, taller than her, very slim, with a light colored hair. She had sensed a foreboding with this person, as if there was trouble attached to their relationship.
This time, Amber saw in front of her the same vision, but this time it was clearer, much clearer. The man was at least six foot tall, if not more. He had a slim build but with defined muscles and his hair was not just light; it was blond, very blond. The sense of foreboding was even worse, as if she knew that even though they would love each other greatly, there would be trouble, lots of trouble. Then the potion began to wear off and Amber wrote down her notes and prepared to leave like the rest of the class. Draco stared at her a moment before walking out behind her.
“Amber?” He called. She turned and Harry came up next to her.
“Go away Malfoy, it’s bad enough she did all your work for you this time. You’re not going to get her to do it again.”
Amber’s next class of the day was Transfiguration with McGonagall, again with the Slytherins. In that class they began talking about animagi. McGonagall said that they would be learning if they had the ability that day. However, Amber could already transfigure. McGonagall eyed her suspiciously when she announced her previous statement. She could see it on the girl’s face how much she wanted to tell her that she could.
“I don’t suppose there is any among you who are already animagi?” Amber slowly raised her hand.
“That’s what I thought. Miss Thibodeau, please come up here.” Amber stood and went to join her.
“Now, Miss Thibodeau, how long have you been able to transfigure yourself?” McGonagall looked at the girl encouragingly.
“Two years.” She replied softly.
“And what is your animal?”
“Bengal tiger,” Amber started.
“That’s wonderful, A—“
“…and a panther.” Amber continued. McGonagall looked at her in amazement.
“Two animals?” She asked, shocked.
“Yeah. I mean it’s just two cats, but when I was 15 I found the Bengal tiger, and then about 8 months after
that I found the panther. I'm decent at either, but the tiger is my favorite.” Amber said, starting to become more confident, she loved being a cat, cats were dominant and aggressive, and she could do anything she wanted as a cat.
“Would you please show us?”
“Um, ok.” Amber handed her wand to McGonagall and closed her eyes. Suddenly she opened them and they were rounder and a brilliant shade of green and the air around her was feral. Then her hair changed from dark brown to orange and she began to morph. Fur began to sprout all over he skin and she fell to all fours and grew.
It took about fifteen seconds, but when she was done she was a big beautiful giant Bengal tiger. She paced around McGonagall for a moment and then stood still, sensing something coming from Draco. This stopped her completely and she stared at him. Then, she began to change again. Never taking her eyes off Draco she transfigured into her panther form. All the students in the room were amazed at the beauty of the giant black cat.
“Well, thank you Miss Thibodeau.” McGonagall said. Amber moved closer to McGonagall and began rubbing her head on her legs, almost knocking her over.
“Yes, yes, I get the hint, class, she would love it if you pet her.” Some of the class giggled, but Harry, Ron and Hermione understood why. It brought her comfort to be touched and held by others. However no one moved. So Amber slinked through the desks to them. As she moved past the desks, the students hesitantly stuck their hands out and caressed her fur. Harry and Ron both smiled at her when she sauntered over to them. They reached out and pet her lovingly. When she got to Draco he made no moves to touch her, even though she knew he wanted to very badly.
“Oh, Mr. Malfoy, live a little.” McGonagall said with a smile, thoroughly enjoying how her class was turning out to be that day. When he still didn’t move, Amber huffed put her front paws onto his desk and stuck her face in his.
*C’mon pretty boy, I can smell it on you.* Amber bated staring into his eyes. Finally, Draco reached out and put his hand on her head behind her ear. She moved into his hand nearly knocking him over and closed her eyes. He began to caress her and she started to purr loudly. Then she licked his face and dropped herself off the desk and changed back into herself as she moved back down the aisles, not looking back to see the look on Draco’s face. She walked to McGonagall and took her wand back, then took her seat next to Hermione. Hermione giggled softly as she looked back at the look on Malfoy’s face. Amber joined her when she glanced back herself, she winked at him and they got back to work.
After her display in class, it was discovered that among the Slytherin and Gryffindor 7th years, that Draco Malfoy had the ability to transfigure into a white Bengal tiger, much to everyone’s surprise, Harry hoped it would be a ferret; Harry Potter could transfigure into a griffin, surprise surprise, Blaise Zabini could transfigure into a king cobra, Hermione Granger had the ability to transfigure into a chimpanzee, Pansy Parkinson could transfigure into a dragonfly, and finally Ron Weasley had the ability to transfigure into a Great Dane. All were pleased with their abilities, and while they, including Amber, were placed into the advanced class, the rest of the students remained in the class as it was.
After lunch she had a free period and went to the library to look up all she could on Voldemort and everything he’d ever done. She wanted to be sure she knew exactly what she was doing when she went after him. Draco found her a few minutes later surrounded by books. He peered at some of the titles for a moment and realized what she must be reading about.
“Why are you looking up that?” He asked suddenly. She looked up at him irritated he had interrupted her reading. Then she recognized who it was and her face softened.
“I have a paper.” She easily lied to him. “Why?”
“No one, aside from Granger, has ever wanted that much information about him. Besides, just ask Potter.” He said and turned away.
“Why don’t I ask you?” Her voice calm and smooth. He turned and he saw her staring at him, a purely innocent look on her face.
“What makes you think I know anything about him?”
“You do don’t you?”
“Well yes… But still, what makes you think that I would want to waste my time telling you anything of importance.”
“Because,” she said getting up from her chair and moving towards her. “ your death eater father taught you everything about the old bastard, and you can’t help but want to tell someone who isn’t a half wit like those goons you hang around with, or that little dog faced bitch who follows you everywhere. Right Draco.” His heart rate increased the more she talked to him. Then she stopped altogether and laughed at him.
“Now, go back to your dungeon and stop bothering me.” She said sadly as she sat back down and began reading again. He was shocked that she had done that; insulted his father, his friends, and he was letting her get away with it. He couldn’t believe he was leaving her there to study. What he wanted to do was go back there and tell her off, but he didn’t, he didn’t know what to do.
