Chapter two: Time is never ending
Present time…
Kari sat beside her little brother in their old, but sturdy apartment. It was an apartment with just one room and an old mattress in it. There was also a little bathroom, but that was all she could afford. She was not unhappy. She was actually very grateful. How many sixteen year old girls with hardly any education except the books she read and elementary schooling had their own apartment? When she was only five they had been found by a woman and she took them in. The woman was nice at first except the fact she keep telling her and Sora that there Daddy was dead, when she knew that he was not. She had no proof but she just knew. She often wondered why no one found them. There daddy would try to find them right?
The woman who took them in was a very boring person. Best way to describe her was normal. So when Kari told the woman that her daddy was a werewolf and a wizard, the woman did not take a liking to her. Years passed and strange things kept happening to the point where the woman began to panic and began beating her, hoping it would stop. Kari was never weak, but when the woman first hit her little brother Sora on his 10th year she lost it. The woman somehow ended up a bed of crawling vines. She stole all the money she could find and bought two tickets to London. No one found them and they had been living there since
She was 13 when she found her first job. Well sort of. She stood in front of shops and stores and sung her heart out trying to get money. She did that with the causal pocket picking. She never told her brother about it. She wanted to keep him as innocent as she could, but her brother was now to the point where he was scared of pretty much anything except her. It broke her heart seeing him act like a beaten puppy. She blamed herself. After two years of singing around in the beginning of her 15th year a club owner asked her to sing at his club offering an ok pay plus all the tips she got. She accepted it gratefully. Everything went up hill from there.
She began to get popular to the point where a lot of pubs and clubs began to ask her to sing there. Money became steady. She had always liked singing, even as a child. She felt like she was dancing on a wave as she sung. Her brother always told her that her voice was like a medicine that you could not taste or see, but feel. A comforting warmth, but it depends on the song as well. She still had the strangest dreams. She knew her brother and herself were different, something along magically. She knew that there is magic out there. They just long its connection. She also thought that was why her dad never found them. So here she was. She had a home and good food.
She smiled down at her brother who was reading a book on the floor. “Sora I have to go to that new café. You have the address if anything happens. I will be back before the moon hits the night. You should rest well or you will be sick.” She said bending down to kiss his head. He looked up at her with his midnight blue eyes.
A flash of gold flickered within them. “Sister, why do you work so hard? Why do you just leave me? All I am is trouble. Why do I have to get sick all the time?” He asked quietly. Kari frowned at her brother. “Don’t you ever say that again! I’m not going to leave you ever. I love you and you know that you inherited the sickness from dad.” Kari said hugging her brother.
He pushed away from her. “I hate dad.” He mumbled. Kari stood still for a second. “Sora you don’t meant that.” He looked at his sister with hate burning in his eyes and she knew he did. “Yes, I do. Dad never did anything but give me a disease and leave us!” He yelled. Kari’s face held a mask on tightly. She knew her brother never knew their dad and because of the fact he did not remember their old world she could not get him to understand. “Sora I’m sorry you feel that way. I do love you a lot and your dad did too. I have to go. I’m already late. Please just get some rest.” She said wile holding the door looking back once more and then left the apartment heading towards the Café’.
She arrived only eight minutes late. Thankfully her boss did not seem to notice. He grabbed her pushing her towards the stand in the corner of the room. She wanted to laugh. ‘God he is pushy. Not even as drink.’ The crowd looked towards her. Some excited to finally hear her and others who did not ever seem to know who she was. She laughed now. “Hi, my name is Kari Black, I will be singing for you all today. Hope you like.” She bowed goofy.
Unknown to her a mysterious old woman stared at her like a sad nightmare from the past. She picked up the mike. A flash of history filled her mind and quick as it came in her mind in flowed out her mouth. She sung a beautiful but sad a tale of a priestess who fell in love with a half-demon. Visions flew through her mind of an old land with magical creatures that lived along with humans in an on going war. The emotions of the priestess when she was betrayed by half-demon to the end when she killed him read through her and through her song affecting the crowd to deep affected silence.
When the song stopped she could feel the woman’s powers flowing through her. She bowed to the crowd walking off the stage with the echoing of clapping ringing through her ears. The owner came in with a mug full of tips he collected. She smiled warmly at him. She grabbed the money and gratefully took the money he gave her for singing at his Café’. “You lived up to your reputation. Thanks Kari for singing here. Maybe again some time?” He said. She smiled and nodded her head, while walking out the door. “Yes maybe.” She looked at the sky to see that the full moon was beginning to show. She began to jog towards her apartment. Not noticing the tabby cat following her.
She walked throw the crowd of ever lasting people. She knew she had to get home as soon as possible. She turned her head towards an alleyway that she knew would save her a good deal of time. She sighed and walked down the alley hoping to get to her brother before the moon rose fully. Ever since she was a child she hated alleys completely. Every time she went into one something strange happened. She made her way down the dark street. Her head whipped towards the sound of a can crushing.
A pair of hands suddenly grabbed her around the waist. She screamed but it was muffled by the stranger’s hand. She was turned around to see a punk like man. “Look what I got here.” He said. She could smell the alcohol in his breath. She elbowed him in the gut causing him to loosen his grip enough for her to run. She tripped over a pile of garbage hitting the wall beside her. The man ran at her slamming her farther in the wall.
She whimpered and hissed in pain.
Her mind clouded. Flashes of the priestess that she had seen in her vision while singing, swirled in her mind. She felt a warm pure white light pouring inside her. She pushed the man away with her hand. A bright blue light flowed from her hand pounding into the confused man slamming him to the wall knocked out cold. She stared at her hand like it was not part of her. “Shit it happened again.” She yelled. She ran over to the man making sure he was not dead. He was still breathing and no blood showed. She sighed in relief. Her head shot up to the moon lit sky. “Oh no! Not good!” She ran towards her house leaving the man in the alley. A tabby cat walked over to the man sniffing it once then walking over to the wall where Kari just was. The tabby cat transformed into an old looking stern woman. “What is going on? Who are you Kari Black?” The woman whispered.
