Hermione Weasley finished reading the letter and stared at it, dumbfounded. Slowly, she started to cry. If she had known that Draco had these feelings, she would have never married Ron. For years, she had loved Draco but had never expressed her feelings. If she had thought, for one moment, that she had a chance, she would have gladly spent the rest of her life waiting for him.
She had decided to marry Ron when she had read, on the Daily Prophet, that Draco was engaged to Pansy Parkinson (which she later found out was pure bullshit). Hermione had just woken up that morning and had picked up the Daily Prophet. The phone rang, just when she finished the article. It had been Ron. After stuttering for what seemed like an hour, Ron finally formed enough words to propose. (Who the fuck proposes over the phone?!)
Hermione did not know what made her say yes. Maybe it was because she did not want to wait anymore. Maybe it was because she did not want to hurt anymore. Maybe it was because at that moment, she realized that she was never going to get her happily ever after. Whatever the reason, she had said yes and in a few months time, she was walking down that aisle.
There were moments in your life when you remember every detail about an event. It seemed that the wedding that you never truly wanted was one of those moments. All she remembered from that day was Draco. He was standing at the back of the church dressed in a black tuxedo. She did not see him until Ron and her exchanged vows and rings. Hermione had turned away from the priest and started back down the aisle when she saw him. Her heart broke at the sight of him. She realized, at that very moment, just how much she would miss him.
Now, as she sat in the kitchen, she could not help think that if she had just waited a bit longer or she revealed her feelings, maybe she would be married to the love of her life right now.
It wasn\'t that Ron was bad. He was the best husband she could possibly ask for. He tried hard to make her happy and treated her as if she would break. However, no matter how hard she tried, she couldn\'t forget how Draco looked on her wedding day.
After her wedding day, she had decided that she was going to forget about Draco. She arranged the honeymoon on an Uncharted island and even managed to charm it so that owls couldn\'t find it. If she had known that he was in surgery or that he had died, Hermione wouldn\'t have gone at all.
===================================
It was hours into the evening before she managed to pull herself together. Ron would be home soon and she couldn\'t have him thinking that she was crying for his hated rival. Thank whatever God there was that Ron remained ignorant to everything around him.
Hermione went into the bathroom and tried to look presentable. Suddenly, she remembered the end of the letter. She went back out and picked up the second piece of paper. The will stated that everything went to her. She looked at the phone number scribbled on the bottom of the page for a very long time. Finally, she picked up her cell phone and dialed the number.
The phone rang 3 times before someone picked up and said, “Nathan Merit speaking.”
“Hi, this is Hermione Granger and Mrs. Malfoy told me to call you about Draco Malfoy’s will.”
“Oh! Yes, I need you to come by the office tomorrow and sign a few lines. I also have a letter in my possession. Mr. Malfoy wrote it and I was instructed to give it to you if anything was to happen to him.”
“I will definitely pick it up tomorrow. Thank you for your time and I will see you tomorrow.”
“Goodbye.” With that, Mr. Merit hung up. Hermione stayed on the line for a long time until she heard the front door open. Ron came in and immediately came over to kiss her. She didn\'t respond at all, her mind on other things. Soon, Ron forgot about dinner and he carried her up, or tried (He tripped and dropped her near the middle of the stairs). In a few moments, he had her undressed and he entered her. As he was pounding away, Hermione’s mind wandered. She was always thankful that Ron wasn\'t the most attentive person. He never noticed her lack of reaction and never noticed that she never orgasmed. Thankfully, in a few minutes, Ron came inside her and fell asleep almost immediately. Hermione, on the other hand, stayed awake and stared at the ceiling.
Later that night, Ron snoring next to her, Hermione got out, climbed out the window, and sat on the roof. Hermione couldn\'t fall asleep. Just the thought of Draco leaving a letter made a million thoughts run through her mind. She didn\'t know what it was going to say but it was the last part of him she had left. After 15 more minutes outside, she climbed back inside and went to bed. There was no use trying to answer something that had no answer to.
=============================
The next morning Hermione got up before Ron and went out. She drove to the office, using the address on the will. It was well over an hour before all the paperwork was finished and she managed to get out of the office.
She drove to an empty parking lot and opened the letter.
=============================
Dear Hermione,
If you are reading this letter that means that I am no longer with this world. That means that the surgery was unsuccessful and that I am dead. Easy way to put it, huh? I am dead. I don\'t know any other way to put it and you always wanted me to get right to the point. I want to congratulate you on your recent wedding. I\'m sorry I didn\'t have time to congratulate you right around after the ceremony, I was needed elsewhere. I truly apologize that I wasn\'t there for the most important day of your life and believe me, only the most dire needs would have kept me from being there for you. I hope, with all my heart that found that love that people search for all their lives.
You were never an impulsive person and that means that you have thought a lot about his proposal and you made the choice that made you happy. It is my life’s dream that you\'d be happy and I hope you stay that way for the rest of your life.
I hope that the Weasel gives you everything you ever wanted and gives you everything you will ever need. I have a feeling that you will be very happy with him and if he pisses you off, I\'m sure my lawyer will justify any dismembering done to him. I know that he had loved you since back in the first year and I don\'t think that love will run out anytime soon. Love like that last a lifetime and more.
I never thought that things would turn out so good for us. We became best friends and we were able to have many memories together. I will always remember you and the times that we had. I will not easily forget the times studying, reading, and even fighting. If it weren\'t for you, I would\'ve never understood that you don\'t have to be the person people expect you to be. You taught me many wonderful lessons and I will cherish them, even in death.
Don\'t cry for me. I deserved any hell I\'m may be going through and a pretty face like yours should not be marked with tears. And, if you aren\'t crying for me, at least shed a tear. Come on, I was one of you best friends! Yeah, that’s right. That’s a proper tear. Funny, huh? How it’s so much easier joking about your death when you\'re actually dead.
All the funny things aside, I want you to know that you are the one person in my godforsaken life that believed in me. You were the only one to hug me when my father died, the only one to take care of me when I was sick. Hermione, you are the most important person to me and know that I will be forever thinking about you, wherever I may be.
With all my Love,
Draco Malfoy
==============================
Hermione finished the letter, tear streaming down her face. She stared at the letter for several long moments then read it again and again. She kept on reading it until the words were etched onto her soul. This was the only piece of Draco she had left and it was only paper. She couldn\'t believe that he apologized so many times about not being there for her. She should be the one to apologize. She was the one that wasn\'t there. She wasn\'t even there for his funeral.
Hermione felt her heart breaking as she sat in her car. Her soul was being ripped to shreds. She couldn\'t do anything about it and there was no way to put it back together. She loved him with every fiber of her being and it wasn\'t until this moment that the fact really sunk in. Draco was dead. Draco was dead and she was still living. She sat in that car, oblivious to everything. The world seemed to have stopped turning. The world couldn\'t possibly be turning when Draco wasn\'t in this world anymore. Hermione sat in that car until she had no more tears to cry and still she sat.
By the time she had composed herself enough to enter the real world; it was already in the evening. Hermione started her car and drove slowly out of the parking lot. She didn\'t know where to go from here. Was she to act like nothing was wrong? Was she to divorce Ron and go chasing a ghost?
=================================
Hermione pulled into her driveway and entered her house. Ron sat on the couch and looked up when she walked in. He got up and hugged her, not noticing her red nose and puffy eyes. Hermione closed her eyes. It was in that moment that she decided what she was going to do. Draco said that he wanted her to be happy and goddamnit she was going to be happy. Draco wanted her with Ron and that is what she was going to do. Even if it killed her, she would be happy. There is no such thing as a happy ending anyway.
