A/N Bear in mind that my ficlets will not always be linear. My original intention was to expand The Watcher into a full-length fic but it just wouldn’t be pushed so I’ve tried to do something a little different.

Familiar

Harry Potter dreams of dancing teddy bears, soft red hair and the smell of mint. When he wakes, it is dark. It is always dark until Uncle Vernon unlocks the cupboard door. He waits calmly, patient for an eight-year-old. Harry is familiar with waiting.

Today, Aunt Petunia is taking him shopping for shoes, the one thing Dudley can no longer hand down because Harry’s feet are small, much smaller than Dudley’s.

Aunt Petunia takes him to a charity shop, and they find a pair of brown shoes that fit. They are very comfortable and have no holes in them. Harry loves them. The shoes are the only things he has ever been given that didn’t belong to Dudley first.

When he says thank you, Aunt Petunia glares at him. Harry is familiar with that glare.

At school, the children laugh at his shoes; they are not ‘cool’, not new and not the right colour. The other children do not approve of them, so they laugh and point and throw things. Harry says nothing and tries to concentrate on his drawing. He is familiar with humiliation.

He assumes a vacant expression and zones out the rest of the class. He is drawing a lady, she has thick red hair and green eyes just like Harry’s.

~

Harry walks home alone - Dudley has measles and Aunt Petunia will not drive to the school just to pick up Harry.

He doesn’t see the boy because he is admiring his shoes. The boy wrestles him to the ground; he doesn’t fight back and he doesn’t cry out. He never cries anymore. Harry is familiar with pain.

He must have lost consciousness because when he wakes it is nearly dark. His shoes are gone. A pretty lady with blonde hair is standing over him, asking him if he is okay. She smiles kindly when she pulls him to his feet and asks him if he needs a doctor. She touches his arm gently. Harry flinches and runs away in panic, his bare feet slapping against the concrete. Harry is not familiar with kindness.

When he reaches the door of number 4, Privet Drive Uncle Vernon is waiting for him.

He gets three lashes for being late and seven for losing his shoes. He is sent to his cupboard without dinner. This Harry is very familiar with.

As he drifts off to sleep he thinks of the kind smile and the gentle hand on his arm and shudders.
