The Summer
Chapt: ~T: ~The Summer~
There was no love lost between Harry and the Dursleys, but this summer sank to a new low, and Harry simply did not have the strength to put up with it.
The summer holiday started off badly as usual, with Uncle Vernon waiting at the train station in London. Harry would have rather gone home with Mrs. Weasley who was standing next to Uncle Vernon, attempting to carry on a conversation much to Uncle Vernon’s chagrin. Harry could see the vein in Uncle Vernon’s forehead pulsating. When he spotted Harry he shouted “Here Boy!, About bloody time you showed up! We are going NOW! I’ll not be waiting ‘round here for all this blathering nonsense.”
Harry quickly said his goodbye’s to the Weasley’s and Hermione who hugged him and said, “Be strong Harry, and don’t forget to write”. Mrs. Weasley also grabbed him and hugged him and said “maybe later you can come for a bit”.
Uncle Vernon, about two yards away, yelled “BOY! You best come NOW! I am leaving this bloody place with or without you”. Harry was extremely tempted to just let him go but he knew Dumbledore would not be happy if he didn’t go back to Privet Drive.
Harry didn’t say anything on the ride back to #4 Privet Drive, he just looked out the window and like wise Uncle Ve did didn’t say anything either which suited Harry just fine. When they arrived at Privet Drive Uncle Vernon stepped in front of Harry and yet again for what seemed the thousandth time said, “We’ll not be having any of your foolishness, you hear? Not one bit of your abnormality or I’ll lock you in your room and you won’t go back to that place ever again.”
Harry could feel the anger rising in him. His eyes narrowed at Uncle Vernon and in a chillingly calm voice said “If you do, then you will have to answer to my Godfather, you know… the murderer…?” That seemed to do the trick, it shut Uncle Vernon up for the time being.
Harry pushed passed him and carried his tings up to his room. Harry knew he had two blissful days without Dudley before he come back for the summer holidays, and he fully intended to enjoy every minute of it.
Before he knew it Dudley was there, but Harry paid little attention to the Dursleys. He slept when he wanted, ate when he felt like it and did his homework even in the middle of the day. He no longer feared the Dursleys, and quite frankly, no longer even gave a damn about what they thought or said to him. Amazingly enough they seemed to leave him well enough alone-- minus one or two small incidences which consisted of Uncle Vernon or Aunt Petunia yelling and Harry wordlessly glaring at them.
After a week of this Harry sent Hedwig off to Dumbledore asking to go to the Weasley’s, Dumbledore wrote back saying ‘not yet.’ This went on twice more and finally on the 3rd week of the break he simply owled Ron and told him he would be there June 1st by way of the Knight Bus and not tell anyone, he didn’t want Dumbledore to step in and make him stay at the Dursley’s.
Harry finally showed up for breakfast on June 1st at the Dursley’s and simply informed them that he was going to his friend Ron’s for the rest of the summer. The Dursley’s didn’t say anything, Uncle Vernon simply grunted. Harry got up form the table, went upstairs, packed his things and got ready to go. Suddenly one of the school’s owls flew in his window; the letter was from Dumbledore and said:
Harry;
I know you are probably going to the Weasley’s regardless of what I
say. I do wish you would stay with your Aunt and Uncle a bit
longer. I will write you later at the Weasley’s.
Sincerely;
Dumbledore
Headmaster, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
Harry would have loved to do what Dumbledore wanted but he just couldn’t stand being at the Dursley’s any longer. Harry checked his watch it was a little after 8:30am. He grabbed his wand and his money pouch and dragged his trunk and Hedwig’s cage downstairs and outside. He sat down on his trunk and stuck out his wand and waited.
He didn’t have to wait long, the Knight Bus come shortly Harry climbed aboard told the driver he wanted to go to the Weasley house in the Burrow and paid the fare. Fortunately the Burrow was on the way to another stop and Harry was there by 9:45am.
Ron seemed to have been watching for him. He burst out the front door hollering at him, “HARRY…HARRY…you’re here!!!”
Ron was soon followed by the twins, Ginny, and Mrs. Weasley. “Harry…” Ron began in a whisper, “I didn’t tell them, honest, Dumbledore wrote mum and said you were probably coming anytime now, she has been frantic thinking you would have shown up already.”
Mrs. Weasley walked up before Harry could say anything and hugged him so hard Harry thought she was going to crush him. All she said was “Thank the Gods you are alright, where have you been??? I have been so worried, ever since Dumbledore wrote us earlier and said you were coming…” she drifted off.
Harry spoke up…”I wrote Ron, but I told him not to tell you. I didn’t want Dumbledore saying I couldn’t come. I am sorry I didn’t mean to make you worry.”
“It’s ok Harry.” She said, then she turned and looked at Ron and said “YOU MEAN YOU KNEW…. YOU KNEW and you didn’t tell me??? You let me get all frantic with worry and you didn’t tell me… RONALD WEASLEY! How could you!?!?!?”
“But Mum,” Ron protested. “I promised Harry I wouldn’t. I couldn’t break my word.”
Mrs. Weasley looked at Ron scathingly. A look almost reminiscent of Professor Snape, Ron shuddered.
~~
The rest of the summer went by with little drama except for the usual that involved the twins and their inventions. Other then that Harry enjoyed settling into the family routine which unlike the Dursley’s, didn’t involve yelling at Harry.
Soon it was time for a visit to Diagon Alley for their school supplies. But shortly before they left via floo Hedwig arrived with a letter fro Harry from Dumbledore, It read:
Harry;
Be careful on your way back to Hogwarts this year.
Voldemort has spies everywhere.
Stay with the Weasleys at ALL times until you get on the train.
Stay Safe.
Dumbledore
Harry didn’t say anything, all he thought was ‘as if I could lose the Weasleys’
The next thing Harry knew they were meeting up with Hermione at Flourish and Blotts to get their textbooks for the year. Harry looked at is list, he was taking Care of Magical Creatures, Potions, Defense Against Dark Arts, Transfiguration, Arithmancy, Herbology, History of Magic and Charms. He had finally dropped divination; he hated being told he was going to die every time he went to class. Their next stop was to pick up potion’s supplies, it seemed that Harry was out or almost out of everything. After all their shopping was done they had lunch at the Leaky Cauldron, after lunch Hermione and her parents said their goodbye’s to Harry and the Weasleys.
Hermione said “Harry, Ron, see you next week on the train.”
“Yeah see you then” they both replied.
~
Harry and the Weasleys flooed back to the burrow.
“Now all of you, upstairs, and put all of your stuff away, no just dumping it all over the place.” said Mrs. Weasley.
Ron looked at Harry and just rolled his eyes. As they headed upstairs to Ron’s room he snorted “That’s likely to happen”, with that Ron dumped his packages on his bed while Harry attempted some order with his in his trunk.
The last week was spent in an almost scramble to get things ready, especially last minute doing of homework.
“Two rolls of parchment for Professor Bins, and THREE for McGonagall! What’s wrong with them!” Ron exclaimed “You’d think we had nothing better to do all summer but homework.”
“Ron, maybe if you had started earlier you wouldn’t be so far behind right now” said Harry.
“You know you are starting to sound more like Hermione everyday” Ron huffe
“I
“I’m just saying…” Harry replied without looking up from his book on the history of Quidditch.
“I know, I know” said Ron shaking his head.
Just then Mrs. Weasley knocked on Ron’s door and stuck her head in. “Ronald Weasley!” she exclaimed “why aren’t you packed yet? We have to leave for London early in the morning! PACK NOW!” with that she slammed the door shaking the entire house.
Ron rolled his eyes, “Help me would you Harry?”
“Sure, what do you want me to do?” asked Harry putting down his book.
“Just help me shove all of this stuff in my trunk, I hope it all fits” said Ron looking doubtfully at his trunk and the huge pile of school stuff he had, which included a new set of much nicer dress robes. These robes, unlike his last set which still made him shudder, were a black velvety material with silver clasps and they even had special pockets on the inside for various things like his wand, money and anything else he might want. They were probably the best thing he owned-- Fred and George had bought them for him. Where they got the money he didn’t know but these robes were great. He and Harry finally managed to get everything crammed in to his trunk and Harry had to sit on the lid just to get it closed while Ron locked it.
“Ron you need a trunk like Moody’s, especially the way you pack” Harry snickered
“So I’m not a neat freak like you are, who cares.” said Ron scowling.
“I’m just kidding, you know” said Harry as he jumped off Ron’s trunk.
Before Ron could respond, Mrs. Weasley called up the stairs “RON, HARRY, GINNY, FRED, GEORGE… Dinner is ready!” You could feel the house shake and groan with the thunder of all the pairs of feet running down stairs.
After a hardy dinner that could rival the feasts at Hogwarts they all got ready for bed, they had a very early morning ahead of them. But before Harry went to bed addeadded downstairs in his bare feet and sought out Mrs. Weasley.
“Harry, whatever are you still doing up???” she asked when he walked in the kitchen in his pajamas.
“Mrs. Weasley, I just wanted to thank you for letting me stay, I mean with me just showing up and all…” his voice trailed off.
“Harry dear, you are a part of this family now, and always will be. You are always welcome here regardless, why I could no more put you out then I could any of my children.” said Mrs. Weasley “Now, off to bead with you, we have a very early morning”.
As he crawled into bed in Ron’s room Harry couldn’t decide if he wanted to laugh or cry. He was touched by what Mrs. Weasley had said to him.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Weasley was muttering to herself “ BY THE GODS, I swear that boy isn’t going back to that house so help me… practically begged Dumbledore to let him come after the first week…really…no place for a decent child…with thoes people…”
~
At the same time Mrs. Weasley was muttering to her self in the Burrow, At Hogwarts Dumbledore sat behind his desk, his eyes twinkling. The person in front of him was the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher and she was incredibly nervous about the prospect of the upcoming year.
“Really Professor Dumbledore, what will people think? I mean he is my nephew, and he will be in my classes…” she trailed off.
“I am sure, my dear, that you will handle the situation perfectly,” said Dumbledore slightly amused “You were, after all, an Auror”.
