Chapter Nineteen
Hermione watched as Severus Snape spoke in nearly silent tones to Luna who was quietly crying. Lucius’s strong hand slid around her waist, pulling her closer to himself.
Kissing her temple, he asked, “How is she?”
“She was attacked,” she whispered, clearly still concerned. “In a place that should have been safe.” Hermione looked into his eyes. “The wounds will heal. It’s her spirit I worry about.”
“Miss Lovegood is strong,” he assured her. “Remember what you’ve told me—there’s more to her than meets the eyes. This is no different.”
She leaned into him, needing to feel his strength as he held her. His arms went all the tighter around her. Hermione closed her eyes, letting out a weary sigh.
“Have you eaten?” he asked her.
“I haven’t an appetite.”
“Starving yourself will not help her,” he pointed out.
Smiling she said, “I’m well aware of that. Unlike you, I had a rather large breakfast.” She frowned. “Which is odd, because usually I don’t touch morning meals.”
“I hate to interrupt your tender moment of domesticity, but I wish to leave the room without becoming a part of a threesome,” Severus said, as he walked over to where they were standing.
Pulling Hermione out of the doorway, Lucius asked, “Well?”
“She doesn’t know who attacked her,” he said coldly. “I went into her mind and saw it all. The person stayed to the shadows and was swift.”
“So you don’t know if it was a man or a woman?” Hermione inquired, looking over to Luna.
“Nothing,” he muttered. “I want this attacker to suffer. How dare they assault a student under my care?”
Hermione pulled away from Lucius going over to Luna. Quietly she stroked the blonde’s hair off of her face with a tender hand. Her friend opened her eyes, smiling as best as she could with half her face swollen. It would take another few hours for the potions to heal her completely.
“If you wanted to visit again, all you had to do was ask,” she whispered, making Luna giggle. “Luna, do you want to know who did this to you?”
Her friend thought it over and nodded. “I don’t want anyone else hurt.”
“Did your attacker say as much?” Hermione inquired.
“Maybe. I don’t remember.”
“Can I look into your mind? See the attack?”
Luna trembled at the words. “Will I…will I see it?”
“I don’t know,” she answered honestly. “I don’t think so. But what I think and what I know, are two different things.” Hermione settled back down into her seat, knowing her friend wouldn't be able to handle the memory of the violence at the moment. “So I’ve been reading up about different magical inheritances. Did you know that they run in pureblood families?”
“Oh yes, it’s fairly common knowledge,” Luna murmured.
“According to the book I’m reading, it’s rare for a half blood to have one and impossible for a muggle born to do so,” she said quietly. “Which brings up several questions.”
“That goes without saying,” she stated airily. “But you should be careful. Not only are there those who are prejudiced against what you have, but those that are jealous as well.”
“What do you mean?”
“Some pureblood families want your extra gifts. But because of one reason or another they can’t have it. I figure its inbreeding.”
Hermione let out a hum. “Genetics?”
Luna nodded. “The ones that still have the magic inheritances have powerful genetics. They also have more than a handful of babies born on the wrong side of the blanket, thus disbursing the seed as it were.”
“You mean to say that I could be a great-grand bastard of a pureblood?” Hermione whispered, feeling shaken.
Luna took her hand. “It’s language such as that I find horrid.”
“But…”
“Hermione,” she said, her voice strong. “This isn’t about you, not really.” Luna took a deep breath and said in her usual singsong voice, “It’s about power. Who wants it, who has it, and, Merlin help us, who wants to destroy it.”
Hermione blinked at Luna. She had sounded so unlike herself. The airiness was gone, but what was there was pure galvanized steel. The brunette smiled at her.
“When it’s all said and done, Luna, you’re tougher than anyone gives you credit for,” she murmured.
The blond grinned. “I know, but it’s lovely to hear.”

Hermione looked at the boxes that sat before her with an air of trepidation. They held her parent’s papers. She had put off looking through them until this moment. But now she had a reason, more than one she realized as she thought it over. Worrying her lower lip, she went over to the first box and opened it up.
She set up different piles around her. Paid bills, insurance papers, and assorted personal correspondence that she would go through later were all arranged neatly around her as she made head way through it all. Some of them should have been shredded and disposed of years ago, but her parents tended to keep a hold of everything—including tax forms that went as far back as a decade before she was born it would seem.
Hermione was about to burn them when she noticed a manila envelope that looked younger than the paperwork surrounding it. Pulling it out, she was a little shocked to see her name on it. She opened it carefully and pulled out a thick pile of papers. Among them were her birth certificate, a small picture of her curled trustingly in the arms of a scared looking woman, and…
Hermione practically dropped the papers. It couldn’t be, she thought. There was no way...was there? With trembling hands she lifted the papers and looked it over. Was it a fake? Could this be some sort of ruse? No, she thought. To what end? This wasn’t the kind of joke her parents would perpetrate on anyone, least of all on her.
Lucius walked in. “I should have known that you would be in here. Dinner…” It was then that he saw the look on her face, as well as the lack of color in her cheeks. “What is it?” he asked, moving to her.
She turned to him, looking utterly lost. “I-I was adopted.”

Hermione adopted! Raise your hands if you saw this coming. Okay, I'll put my hand down. And here my evil ways continue by dropping another cliffhanger. But take comfort in the fact that I update daily.
I need to go back for only a moment to the last review sing-a-long. I am very aware that Wings was Paul McCartney's group, but as he has since performed the music solo after the band (Wings) broke up, I accepted his name as the performer of "Live and Let Die". It only seemed fair as there were those out there that didn't know of the group, but only knew of the leader of the band (pun intended). Thank you.
Time for the answer to the last review sing-a-long! As many of you know the song was "Sweet Dreams (are Made of These)" by the Eurhythmics. I had no idea Marilyn Manson recorded it as well. Go figure, but I'll accept that as well. Cookies are going out to a lot of people today!!! VoraciousReader, Diamond-Helen, margaritama, ladysnape, Maggiecate, Raine, PutrescentQueen, Tenar10r, Chelle, Chyara, sirsevchick, Laur, nonentity, and catstaff. Chocolate chips go out to Mia, moni, and Steph for knowing the song, but not the performer(s). If I missed anyone, I'm sorry.
Time for the next review sing-a-long!! "Every review/just like the last/I'm the ship tied to the mast/two distant lands takes both my hands..." Tough one here people. And just to be a pain in the rear, no clue as more than a few of you will more than likely Google it. Thanks for taking your time to read and review my work. Have a terrific day everyone!
