~Chapter nineteen: liars and lamentations~
Sirius braced himself and stood up. He felt Isis stand up next to him; she didn’t seem to be bracing herself. Instead Isis picked up her tart and walked from the Great Hall after Professor McGonagall. Sirius fell into step behind Isis and wondered how much Remus had reveled to the headmaster.
"Pepper Imp." Professor McGonagall said at the foot of the statue that hid Dumbledore’s office. She looked back at Isis and Sirius. "You two are to meet with the headmaster now and then the three of you will meet with your parents."
"Mom!" Isis cried. "I have to meet with mom?"
"Yes Miss Lupin."
Isis’s shoulders slumped. "Oh no."
Sirius felt slightly better. He didn’t have anything to worry about. His parents wouldn’t care. Then he felt a sudden jolt. What if Dumbledore called the Potters instead?
As they climbed the stairs Sirius could hear Isis sniffling behind him. He knew that she had already gotten in serious trouble this year; he wondered what this would mean for Isis. Sirius knew as one of the best students in their class he had nothing to really worry about. Isis’s scores were about the same as his except in Arithoromancy maybe she’d be all right too.
Professor McGonagall quickly rapped on the door. As it opened Isis’s breath caught in her chest. The last time she had been here she wasn’t in half as much trouble as she was bound to be in now.
Dumbledore smiled. "Hello Isis. Sirius."
"Hello." Isis and Sirius mumbled together.
"Please sit down." The headmaster said invitingly.
Isis heard professor McGonagall leave. The door seemed to ring out a death sentence as it snapped shut. Isis suddenly felt like she couldn’t breathe, she and Sirius were being accused of doing something they hadn’t gotten a chance to do.
Dumbledore smiled kindly. "As I understand it you too are romantically involved and your passions have been getting the better of you lately."
Sirius nodded. "Yes sir." He said quietly.
Dumbledore steeped his fingers, "Well I’m not saying that I agree with your actions. However it is very hard to live a life free of romantic passion especially when you’re young. Yet I can not stress more the importance of understanding your own mind." Dumbledore looked toward Isis. "Life isn’t the how. Or what if? Life is why? What are your motives? If you are truly in love then you have my congratulations. Still punishments are in order. Expulsion is not the right path. If expelled I know that you two will find ways to perform magic. Especially when you become of age. So after a long talk with Mr. Lupin and a long night without sleep I think the best course of action is a one-week suspension during which you will live with you’re appointed guardians. Isis you will stay with your aunt and uncle. Sirius you will stay with Sarah and David Potter."
Isis sighed. "When does it take effect sir?"
Dumbledore smiled again. "Next week during the Easter holidays so that you don’t miss any class this close to OWLs."
Isis smiled. "And do we have to serve any detentions?"
"Of course. I’ll just schedule it for a night that won’t interfere with other detentions." Dumbledore smiled. "You’re almost too accustomed to detentions Miss Lupin."
Isis smiled again.
"I have called your parents." Dumbledore said more seriously. "Miss Lupin your mother says that she expects to meet you after dinner tonight. Sirius your parents…" Dumbledore took a deep breath.
"They don’t care. Do they?"
Dumbledore frowned, "No. In fact Philnius suggested expulsion."
"Among other things!" A painting called from the walls of Dumbledore’s office. "My great great grandson, always bitching about something."
Sirius put his hands behind his head and balanced his chair on it’s back legs and sighed. "Not one to suffer fools…" He let the chair down on to all of its legs. "May we go back to breakfast sir?"
Dumbledore smiled again. "Yes."
Sirius took Isis’s hand as soon as they stepped out of the office. Isis saw his eye give a sudden subtle twitch.
"I’m sorry about your parents." Isis said quietly.
Sirius turned his face so that it was even with Isis’s line of vision. "It’s not your fault… but thank you." Sirius smiled meekly. "I feel like skiving off today. How about you?"
"What would we do instead?"
Sirius put Isis’s hands over Isis’s hips. "Anything that won’t earn us another detention."

Isis lay on Sirius’s bed and Sirius lay next to her. They were each reading books from the Library. Isis was reading a book about muggle philosophy and Sirius was reading Quidich Through the Ages. (For the seventeenth time) The dorm was silent as a tomb except when one of them turned a page.
Sirius stretched sometime around ten and saw that Isis was completely absorbed in her book. Sirius looked over the top of the book and tried to read a paragraph about a man named Plato, but reading from upside down and without Isis’s knowledge was a slight disadvantage. Sirius was just up to the part where Plato’s teacher Socrates had drunk a vile of hemlock when Isis snapped the book shut. "I should write a book." She stated.
Sirius stared at her with saucer wide eyes. "About what? Hemlock?"
Isis ignored Sirius second question. "About Philosophy and the Dark arts. Plato believed in the soul so if it’s the same Plato I think it is…"
"…How many men do you know named Plato?" Sirius asked
"…Then he wrote the Republic." Isis continued. "This man believes that the mind is made up of three separate parts and each part has a purpose. It’s the perfect supplement to defense against the dark arts. It is!"
Sirius put a hand on Isis shoulder. "Well then shouldn’t you write one about meditation, I mean that’s helped me with all of my classes… well all of them except history of magic."
"I’ll put in a section on eastern Philosophy and meditation, but all of this stuff is helpful."
Sirius scratched the back of his head. "I don’t know Aye. I mean unless you want to teach… I mean you said you wanted to be an auror… I’m not saying you shouldn’t…"
Isis leaned up and kissed him, "I wouldn’t listen to you even if you told me not to."
Sirius smiled wryly. "Are you sure you’re an elf. Sometimes your so stubborn I have to wonder if your not a dwarf."
Isis put her left forefinger to her lips. "Shush. Don’t tell anybody."
Sirius laughed. "We’re in so much trouble when Remus and Lily come back after lunch."
"Unless we aren’t here."
"Where would we go?"
Isis smiled mischievously. "Well, we could go to lunch, or the hospital wing, or the lake…" Isis shrugged. "Or we can go to our separate beds. We have lots of options."
Sirius sat down on the bed next to Isis, "Well we have to go elsewhere Isis. If we’re caught then we’ll be in big trouble."
"Then lets go to the lake." Isis said sweetly.
"What would we do there?" Sirius asked.
Isis smiled. "Hide."
Sirius looked into her eyes. "I’ve been a bad influence on you."
"Maybe I needed a bad influence." Isis put her hands behind her head and lay down.
Sirius undid the two buttons on Isis’s stomach and blew a raspberry.
Isis flailed to try and knock him off, but it was in vain. He lifted his mouth from her skin and began to tickle her madly.
Isis was telling Sirius off in Elvish between gales of laughter. She felt her hair come out as she kicked and struggled to speak English.
Sirius scooped her up and held her like a sack of potatoes. "Didn’t anyone ever teach you that it’s not nice to kick?"
Isis caught her breath. "Nope."
"Then I’ll have to teach you." Sirius said beginning to walk out of the dorm with Isis still slung over his shoulder. "Let’s go down by defense against the dark arts." He said smacking Isis’s backside with his free hand.
"Oww!" Isis exclaimed. "Did you have to hit me that hard?"
Sirius grinned. "Yup. It’s a nice view from here."
Isis rolled her eyes. "Be careful. I just might start liking having you smack my ass."
Sirius smacked it again. "I wouldn’t want that to happen."
Isis squealed. "Sirius!"
"I’m trying to get you to like it." Sirius said opening the fat lady’s portrait.
Isis slumped and let her chin fall just bellow Sirius’s shoulder as he walked down toward the stairs. Isis heard Sirius hum an old swing song as he carefully navigated the steps. He continued to hum as he strolled down the halls and increased the volume every time they rounded a corner.
"Are you trying to get caught?" Isis hissed quietly in his ear.
Sirius chuckled. "Not really. Just going to Defense against the dark arts early."
Sirius suddenly stopped humming when the bell rang. He slid Isis off his shoulder and fixed his robes.
Isis found the floor quite easily as Sirius set her down. They joined the throng and went to class.
When they sat down with Isis between Sirius and Remus Isis noticed that Remus looked worried about something.
"What’s wrong Remus?" She asked politely even though part of her wanted to bash his head in on the corner of his desk.
Remus gave Isis a sudden look of relief. "You didn’t get expelled. Right?"
"Nope." Sirius said.
Remus smiled. "Good. I told the headmaster that you too were just getting too intense and he wanted to know exactly what I meant. So I lied and it may have come out that you two were more involved then you actually were. Then when you didn’t return to breakfast or come to class I thought… well, I’m just glad everything is alright."
"What exactly did you say?" Isis asked.
Remus shifted uncomfortably. "Well first I told Dumbledore that you two were just getting carried away. So he asked what I meant. I told him that I found the two of you in a precarious position. Dumbledore kept pressing me because he could tell I was hiding something. So I went on that I had found you naked in bed and that I had no idea what had happened before I walked in. I know now that nothing happened, but Dumbledore might not."
"What made you realize that nothing happened?" Isis asked.
Just then the teacher walked in. Remus took a piece of parchment and scrawled a note to Isis.
Isis read the note carefully after Remus passed it to her, but she had just finished and was ready to pass the note to Sirius when Professor Toms walked up to the desk.
"Passing notes are we?" Professor Toms asked.
Isis crumpled the note and pressed it to her chest. "Ummm…"
Toms took Isis’s hand and Isis watched as the note fell from her hand and into the teacher’s palm.
"I realized nothing had happened when you told me to fuck myself." Professor Toms read aloud. He leveled a gaze at the whole row from one end, where James sat, to the other end where Sirius sat. "Which one of you no good hooligans wrote this?"
Remus looked down, but Peter raised his hand. "I did."
The whole class shifted its attention to Peter. Peter took a deep breath. "I wrote it to Remus sir. Isis must have just been curious. Neither of them did anything."
Professor Toms pursed his lips. "You expect me to believe that Mr. Lupin told you to do something physiologically impossible."
Peter beamed; he was obviously up to something. "Well sir… I was rather hoping you would read it aloud you see…"
Professor Toms turned several shades of red until a nice maroon hue settled. Isis saw his eye twitch rather sharply and she backed up and hid behind her books. "Detention Peregreiw!" Toms spat. "And ten points from Gryffindor!"
Peter frowned and Peter hung his head in shame, but when Professor Toms turned his back he looked up and winked at Remus. Isis smiled in spite of herself. Maybe Peter wasn’t so bad. He had just gotten her, Remus, and Sirius out of a lot of trouble and the worst thing he ever did was stare at her while she was naked. Isis put her chair back at angle to rival Sirius and decided that England definitely settled with her.
When class let out Isis waited for Peter. "Thanks." She said as he filed out of the room.
Peter grinned sheepishly. "Let’s just call it pay back for not slapping me yesterday."
"Well thanks anyway. You saved all our necks in there."
Peter hoisted his bag a little higher. "Friends then?" He asked holding out a hand.
"Friends." Isis said eagerly taking his hand and shaking it vigorously.
