The Revealing of Secrets

Chapter 19: The Revealing of Secrets

Professor Snape stood in front of his classroom and surveyed the students and they concocted the assigned potion. How innocent they all appeared but many harbored secrets and ill deeds. He looked at Malfoy. The evil little worm had more than enough detentions but still he persisted in getting under Snape’s skin. Last week he was caught sexually assaulting a third year student in his house. Snape had to do everything in his power to keep Malfoy from being expelled. Finally the girl was sent to Pomfrey’s for some mind altering. He had argued bitterly with Dumbledore and was almost surprised when the other yielded. As a consequence Malfoy was to serve detention once a week until graduation – if he graduated.

His gaze flickered to Pansy Parkinson. That little slut was caught administering blow jobs to a host of boys in the prefect’s bathroom. Her expulsion was pending a meeting of Dumbledore and the other professors.

He was disgusted with his house.

Not that the members of the Gryffindor house were any better. He looked over at Potter and Weasley who had perpetrated many schemes over the years. He cursed McGonagall for each time she let them off. And now the famous Harry Potter, he who had taken the one thing had Snape desired most, Miss Granger’s virginity. At least I got my revenge, Snape thought; I got to Miss Weasley before he did. He wondered how that would play out.

At last his hard gaze came to rest on Miss Granger. She was working patiently and diligently like she always did. His heart fluttered and his vision was clouded by memories of her astride his cock, cheeks flushed, breasts heaving…

He brought himself back. There was no place in the classroom for such idle thoughts. But as the potion percolated safely in his room he knew the time was near. When he had asked her to be his mistress he knew that he was actually offering her much, much more. But would she accept?

Immortality was a risky business, he knew. But he had studied the potion a good part of the last decade. He had the utmost confidence in his abilities; after all he was the Potions master.

In two days the potion would be ready. He had made enough for two.

Hermione tried to ignore Harry and Ron, but as usual it was difficult to do. She was trying to concentrate on her potion while trying not to think about Professor Snape at the front of the classroom. Two weeks had passed since that night and she was unable to make much more than eye contact with him.

“What is this party Ginny keeps mentioning?” whispered Ron to Harry.

“Some secret seventh year party that Hermione invited her to,” Harry said glancing at Hermione.

“I didn’t know about any party,” Ron pouted. “Did you?”

“No…Hermione?”

“Quiet, Harry, I’m busy.”

Harry turned back to Ron. “See? She won’t answer me.”

“Potter,” came Snape’s voice from the front of the room. “Miss Granger has had enough of your badgering. I trust you can work out the potion for yourself. Ten points from Gryffindor.”

Hermione heard Potter mumble a curse under his breath. Serves him right, she thought. But later as they made their way to lunch, Hermione pulled Harry aside. Something had been formulating in her brain for the last few days which she couldn’t ignore.

“Harry,” she said when they were alone. “We need to talk.”

Harry nodded. “Things have not been right with your for a while, Hermione.”

“I know.” She took a deep breath. “I didn’t want to do this, but I owe you some explanations. We’ve been friends for too long to leave things this way. In a few months we’ll be graduating and…and who knows what will happen next.”

“So when do you want to talk?”

“Thursday night after dinner, I’m buried in homework until then. Is that ok?”

“Sure, Hermione. Now let’s get some lunch before Ron starts whining again.”

+ + +

Thursday dinnertime found Professor Snape in his rooms. He didn’t like to eat with the staff unless necessary. He liked to think being a loner was part of his mystique. Besides, he had to prepare. Earlier he had dispatched a note to Hermione asking to see her. There had been no reply and it made him nervous. He wanted to take the potion that evening and he wanted her there. So after dinner he decided to patrol the hallways on the chance he may see her. He’d start with the library.

+ + +

“No Ginny, I don’t want to talk tonight. I have more homework than I can handle.”
Hermione had had it with Ginny’s incessant gossiping especially since 99% of it was about Harry. “I need a walk, I’ll be back later.”

Hermione retreated from the common room via the portrait and hurried down the staircase. She knew Harry hadn’t left the Gryffindor tower as of yet but she wanted to be there before him and compose herself what lied ahead. Earlier that day she had received a note from Snape asking to see her that very evening but did not reply.

Lost in her thoughts she hurried along the corridors and made her way to the north tower entrance.

+ + +

Snape stalked along the corridor deep in thought, robes billowing behind him as usual. He almost chided himself for being so caught up in this girl. All his life he despised popular, smart and beautiful people because he had so desperately wanted to become one of them. He hated Black and Harry’s father for that very reason. And until very recently he despised Hermione. She was a know-it-all, a pretty one, but one nonetheless. Every other waking moment he criticized himself for succumbing to her, but it was he who seduced her, was it not?

A noise far down the corridor brought him back to the present. Narrowing his eyes he saw Hermione wrench open the door to the north tower and proceed up the stairs. He wanted to follow her but something told him to wait.

+ + +

Hermione paced nervously in the tower room for a full fifteen minutes rehearsing what she was going to say to Harry. A half a dozen times she almost chickened out and she was almost ready to leave when she heard the footfall on the stair and saw the door open at last. Harry entered and shut the door softly behind him.

The tower room was chilly that night and only a few candles provided light. Hermione stood opposite from Harry and they faced each other like sparring partners. She took a deep breath.

“Thanks for coming. Sorry it is so far away but what I have to say requires privacy,” she started in a small voice.

“I understand,” Harry replied.

She looked at him a moment. How he had grown in the seven years they had been together. Gone was the innocent boy she befriended on the train that first day. Now he was almost a man grown with broad shoulders and a face that was stubbly with whiskers. She shivered involuntary when she remembered the night he took her virginity, how he was resistant at first but then overcome with passion. She sighed.

“Harry, we’ve been friends for a long time now. I trust that you won’t betray my confidence.”

“Why? What’s going on, Hermione?” he asked, frowning.

“Just answer me; will you keep this to yourself? Not even Ron?”

“Yes, yes of course,” he said lightly. She knew he was anxious.

“Very well. What I have to say may shock you, but I have to unburden myself.” She paused for effect. “I found out who gave me that lust potion.”

Harry stared at her, one eyebrow raised in anticipation.

“It was Snape,” she said.

“What?! How do you know?” he said loudly.

“Shhhh,” warned Hermione. “Someone might be near.”

“Sorry,” he said in a forced whisper. “Why Snape?”

“He told me. He did it because he wanted to seduce me. He wanted a virgin.”

Harry shook his head in disbelief. “I don’t bloody believe it.”

“It’s true. But he was heavy handed with the mixture and it backfired. That’s why, we, ah, you know…” She stopped and looked away. “Anyways, he didn’t know what had happened between us and he lured me to his rooms by setting me up with detention.”

“Oh yeah, I remember that. Everyone was shocked that you got detention.”

“Yes, me too.”

She stopped. The next part would be hard. She trembled.

“Are you ok, Hermione?” Harry said, taking a step closer to her.

She nodded. “It’s…it’s just, well I went to his rooms that night and he tried to give me the antidote to the potion but I knew what it was and called him out. I guess it didn’t matter because he took me to his bedroom anyways.” Harder now. “So, then, he…he tied me up, see? Then he beat me and when he found out I wasn’t a virgin, he raped me…” The last part was finished in a haze of tears.

“He raped you? Snape raped you?” Harry yelled. “That sick FUCK! I’ll fucking KILL HIM!”

+ + +

Snape crept up the tower steps careful not to make a sound. Luckily there wasn’t anyone around. He had seen Potter go up only minutes before and it caused him to become very suspicious indeed. When he got closer, he could hear voices. They were low until he heard Potter yell. He froze in his tracks and tried to listen. The voices quieted again and he strained his ears.

+ + +

“Harry, no…listen to me!” Hermione pleaded.

Harry was in a rage and he was ready to storm out of the room and go to Snape. Their shadows danced across the stone walls and the wind began to howl outside.

“I can’t believe he did this to you!”

Hermione went to Harry and held onto his arms. “Harry, calm down and listen. There’s more for you to know.”

“What else did he do to you?” he asked, making an effort to calm himself.

“After…days after I saw him again. He was sorry for what he had done. In fact, he took a beating for it by someone, I don’t know who, but it was bad. Remember how he was limping around in class?”

“I’ll give him a beating,” murmured Harry. Then he looked at Hermione. “He apologized?”

“Yes, and he made it better, Harry. He took all the cuts and bruises away.”

“It still doesn’t make it right.”

“I know…I know, but something happened, Harry. We…ah…became lovers.”

Harry took a step back. “He’s got you under some spell, Hermione. I know it.”

“No, no he doesn’t, Harry. You have to listen…there is more.”

“What else now?” he sighed.

“Well, he asked me to bring another virgin since I wasn’t anymore. I had to or else he would expel me and worse…so I…I found another.”

Harry stared at her. “Who?” he asked in a quiet voice.

“It was Ginny, but I didn’t know that you two had already done it…I swear I wouldn’t…”

“Hermione, are you mad? We didn’t ‘do’ it. In fact I haven’t even worked up the nerve to ask her out!”

“But, Snape said she wasn’t…”

“Did Snape touch her?” Harry asked, enraged again. “Did he TOUCH HER?”

+ + +

Snape had heard enough. It was time to put a stop to this conversation. He stormed up the stairs and threw open the door. Harry and Hermione stood there gaping at him.

“Enough!” he yelled as he entered the room. “Enough with these lies!”

Potter turned to face him, wand out. “I don’t care who or what you are Snape,” he said with a voice full of fury. “I will kill you.”

Snape readied his wand. “Just try it,” he sneered.

“I’ll kill you for touching her,” Harry said taking one step closer. “You sick pervert.”

“You are totally out of your league, Potter. You got lucky against Voldemort but you won’t against me.”

And with that he raised his wand and prepared to deliver an Unforgivable Curse. He would kill Potter once and for all and call it self defense.

Potter raised his wand.

“Avada…” began Snape.

“Cru…” began Potter.

“No!” screamed Hermione.

The final syllables tumbled from both wizards mouths’ and two flashes of light erupted at the same moment Hermione ran between them.

Two flashes came together around Hermione and she collapsed on the floor like a rag doll.

+ + +

Snape dropped his wand and bent over Hermione.

“No, dear Merlin, no,” he said in a strangled voice.

“What have you done?” cried Potter as he stood over them.

Snape ignored him. He placed two fingers on Hermione’s neck and held his breath. It was very, very faint but there was a tiny bit of a pulse. He had to work quickly or he would lose her for sure.

“I’ve got to get her to my rooms quickly,” he said snatching up his wand.

“Is she…?” asked Potter, stunned.

“She will be if I don’t hurry.”

And with an unbelievable amount of strength, he lifted Hermione in his arms and strode out of the room and down the steps. He was only dimly aware of Potter following him but he didn’t care. He had to save her.

Miraculously they were able to get to his rooms without anyone seeing them. Once inside he placed her carefully on the divan and knelt beside her. The pulse was still there but it was fainter than before.

“How…how did she survive?” asked Potter in a small voice.

“I don’t know…perhaps the spells were trying to cancel each other out so it didn’t get her full force.”

“Oh, please…don’t let her die…”

Snape stood up and glared at Harry. “Leave us.”

“But, I can’t…”

“LEAVE US!” Snape thundered. “NOW!!”

Potter looked at Hermione and withdrew at last, slamming the door behind him. Snape had to work fast; they would be here soon to take him away. He looked down at Hermione who was whiter than white.

“Oh please, don’t leave me now,” he said in a broken voice. “I will mend you, I promise…just hold on.”

Snape retreated to the bedroom to retrieve the immortality potion. It was ready and he had planned to take it that very night. With Hermione. Now he was counting on it to save her life. When he returned she was gasping for breath. She was starting her death throes.

“Noooo…please,” he moaned. “Wait, Hermione, you’re not ready yet.”

Carefully he spooned some of the liquid into her mouth and massaged her throat so she could swallow it. Spoonful after spoonful was administered by Snape’s steady hand until at last she began to breathe normally. When he looked into the jar, it was empty. He was in a quandary indeed.

But he didn’t have time to think about it. At that moment there was a loud bang on his door.

“Professor Snape! Open up!” It was Dumbledore.

“Damn him,” Snape muttered. He knew he couldn’t forestall the inevitable but there was one more thing he had to do. He quickly wrote a note and stuffed it into Hermione’s pocket.

“Snape!!”

It was a very defeated Snape that opened the door. Accompanying Dumbledore was McGonagall, Lupin, Tonks and Potter.

“Well, well what a nice surprise,” he said icily.

“Snape, what have you done to the girl?” Dumbledore said pushing Snape back into his room.

“She’s alive Headmaster. See for yourself.”

Everyone crowded into the room to find Hermione breathing but she was still out of it.

“Consider your self lucky she lives, Severus,” said Dumbledore sternly.

“It was just as much Potter’s fault,” retorted Snape.

“But you raped her!” shouted Potter and made a move towards Snape. Lupin and Tonks held him back, but it wasn’t easy.

“Harry, get a hold of your self,” warned Lupin.

“Severus Snape, you are charged with the rape of a student, conspiracy to commit rape of a second student. And attempted murder,” pronounced Dumbledore formally. But as he said it, there as pain etched in his face. Snape knew he had disappointed Albus terribly.

“You will be tried at the Ministry and if convicted, you will be sentenced to Azkaban,” Dumbledore finished.

Snape cursed Potter silently. But he also regretted saving Hermione now. She’s the one who had gotten him into this mess. Apparently she told Potter everything. He hung his head, utterly defeated and he had been so close!

“Will you come quietly?” Tonks asked.

“I will,” he said and suddenly he felt very tired.

+ + +

Hermione was swimming in a very dark pool. It was cold and the water suffocated her until she knew couldn’t hold her breath anymore. Maybe she should just give up. But then she looked up and saw the sun. It was a watery orb so far away but if she fought hard enough she could reach it and be set free. Slowly she swam, up and up and up. It was hard work but she wanted to live. And that will to live spurred her on to reach the surface. When at last she broke through, she took a deep breath and woke up.

Harry’s concerned face was the first thing she saw.

“Harry?” she said and her mouth tasted funny.

“Oh, Hermione, you’re alive…” he said as he hugged her fiercely.

“What happened?”

“You don’t remember?”

“All I remember is being with you in the tower, and then Snape came in…after that…I don’t know.” Her head was fuzzy.

“We each unleashed an Unforgivable Curse at each other. Somehow you rushed towards me and got caught in the middle. You took it full force.” He swallowed and his face etched with pain. “We thought you were dead.”

Hermione closed her eyes but she couldn’t remember anything else. Harry went on.

“Snape brought you here. Somehow…he saved you…” Hermione looked up and saw tears falling unchecked from Harry’s eyes.

“Where’s Snape now?” she asked.

“They took him away. I’m sorry Hermione, but I had to tell Dumbledore.”

Hermione felt panic rising. “Everything?”

“Yes, everything. They’ve taken him to the Ministry. I guess you’ll have to testify.”

She thought she was going to vomit but she held on.

“But he’ll go to Azkaban!” she said, horrified.

“What he did was wrong, Hermione. Very wrong.”

“You’ve always hated him,” she said, angry now. “From the very first day. So are you happy now?”

“What are you saying? That’s crazy! He hurt you and was about to hurt Ginny!”

“Ginny…I’m so sick of that miserable little brat.” Hermione was feeling much better now. In fact, she felt as if she could stand up and kick Harry’s arse. “Well she’s all yours, but I guess someone got to her before you did, Harry!” She laughed hysterically.

Harry grabbed her shoulders tightly. “Get a hold of yourself. Stop talking like that.”

“All I wanted was you Harry. Before the potion. Remember over the holidays? That one kiss? Didn’t it register?”

Harry was silent and she saw that he couldn’t look at her. Suddenly her heart went cold.

“Fine. It’s over between you and me,” she said, standing up. “I am no longer your friend. You betrayed me.”

“Hermione, please…stop it. You’re not feeling well,” Harry said desperately.

“Oh no, I feel fine. In fact, I’ve never felt better in my life.”
