Like King's Cross...Only Not
Hermione’s vision felt blurred for a moment as she was floating. Everything around her was white, and unfamiliar, almost in a sterile sense. But she felt him, the warm presence as it floated near her. She closed her eyes focusing on the embrace and it came, for however brief around her neck. “Severus,” she whispered.
“No, Hermione,” he said and pulled his ethereal figure back from her.
“I don’t understand…”
“This is not the place for you,” he touched his ghost like hand to her cheek.
“But I— we…”
He shook his head slowly and then floated close to her. “You have far greater things to accomplish, Hermione.” Then his ethereal fingers reached forward and stroked her glowing stomach. “Bringing new life to this world for starters…”
“What?” she gasped. “But how—”
“No more questions, Hermione. If you linger, you’ll become a trapped soul.”
“I want to be here with you.” She muttered and threw herself at him, passing right through him.
“I have Lily,” he gestured to her, but the redhead shook her head.
“No you don’t, Severus.” Hermione said. “She has James.” The redhead nodded but floated toward her old friend anyhow, embracing him.
“Lily…” he whispered and she gave him a sad smile.
The redheaded younger witch turned to Hermione. “Dear girl, don’t you see he’s trying to be worthy of you? So that someday, when it is your time, you two will be together again?”
“What?” Hermione did not understand, she felt dizzy, light headed, almost faint. “I don’t— no! I want to stay here with you! I love you!”
“I know,” he whispered and concentrated all his energy into touching her hands. “I love you, Hermione, but it would be selfish of me to want to keep you here. This is no life for you,” he whispered. The white space they were in seemed to surge and for a moment it was as if both Severus and Hermione were real, whole, fleshy human beings. “You showed me love, Hermione. You let me live again…”
“But I—”
“Shh,” he whispered and held her in his arms. “It’s my time, I’ve paid my dues. I would have been a miserable soul doomed to wander all eternity if it hadn’t been for you…” Her tears were falling hard now, soaking against his robes, as she rested her head against his chest. “You allowed me to feel again, you opened up my heart to love. And now? Now I have something to look forward to. I’ll be right here waiting on the other side many, many, years from now.”
“But I want to be with you now,” she sobbed. “It hurts to lose you! I can’t bare to go through it all over again!”
“Don’t be ridiculous,” he whispered and kissed her cheek. “You’ll have company, and I’ll always be with you…” he placed his hand over her stomach and she could have sworn that she felt a spark. “I love you, Hermione, with all my heart. I owe you the only true happiness I’ve ever known.”
Tears tumbled down from her eyes as he pulled her close for one last kiss. “I love you, Hermione Granger.”
“Wait,” she whimpered, feeling his lips fade from hers. “Wait! I love you! I love you! Gods!” she cried collapsing to her fleshy knees as he and Lily Evans faded from sight. She was alone in the sterile white room. Her lungs filled with air and she shrieked as loud as she could. Falling to the ground, Hermione closed her eyes and the world went black.
“No, Hermione,” he said and pulled his ethereal figure back from her.
