Chapter Seventeen
Harry nearly choked on his eggs at the sight that met his eyes. Hermione was at the doorway to the great hall, looking around. She looked stunning. Her hair fell into silken ringlets, she was dressed in the finest of robes that complimented her every curve, and she seemed so content. It was then she saw her dear friend and went straight over to him.
“Harry, it’s been too long!”
“It’s only been a week,” he murmured, hugging her tightly. “You look amazing!” He pulled back. “Have you seen Draco?”
“Not since he went to go train, but he did give me this to give to you.” She handed him a letter. “He’s going to be sending missives to the house and I in turn will send them straight here. You, of course, can send your letters over to the mansion for me to send to him.”
He smiled broadly. “Thanks. That means a lot.”
“I know,” she murmured, squeezing his shoulder.
“So you finally deemed fit to visit us,” Ron said coolly.
Sighing, she turned to face him. “Hello, Ron. How are you?”
He blinked at her. “What the hell happened to you?”
“You know, Ronald, one of these days you are going to swallow your foot so well that you could possibly kick your own ass the hard way,” she stated so dryly that the people around her were snorting with laughter that they were trying to hold back.
It was then that Ginny came flying over and hugged Hermione for all she was worth.
“It’s been forever! So what’s it like? Is the mansion as perfect as I think it is? Is Lucius hung like a stallion? Do tell!!”
“It’s good, the mansion is amazing, and there is no way I’m going to tell you the last,” she murmured, looking towards the head table where Lucius was watching her.
“So what’s it like to be a traitor?” The cold question had her turning around to face Seamus.
“Excuse me? What are you talking about?”
He snorted. “You live with a Death Eater, who you apparently whore for and you wonder why people think you are nothing more than a militant slut?”
“If you have a problem with Lucius Malfoy, take it up with him. By coming to me and using such weak insults in an attempt to make me feel as if I did something wrong, it isn’t worthy of you. You’re angry. We all are, Seamus. None of us got out of the war unscathed. But I refuse to be your whipping girl just because you think I’m weak enough to be so.”
“My mum is dead because of people like him!” he screamed.
“But he wasn’t the one to kill her, was he?” she shot back. “Seamus, if you’re going to pull the trigger on your temper, aim it in the correct direction.”
Several others pulled their classmate away from her, weeping as he went that he missed his mum so much. Hermione stood there shaking, as she tried to collect herself. Taking a deep breath, she looked over to Harry who stood there silently as he watched her attempting to fortify herself.
“I-I think I’ll go to the library.” Turning on her heel, she went walking out of the great hall.
It was on her walk over that she ran into Neville.
“It’s so good to see you,” he said with a warm smile.
“You too, Nev,” she murmured. “How are you doing?”
“Okay,” he said. “You know, I’ve been wondering why Draco never came back to school. I figured now that you’re over there, you would be the one to know.”
She nodded. “He was one of the students that came to school while under Death Eater rule, as you know.”
He nodded.
“And as you know, all of the seventh years that attended at that time were all given a choice to take the NEWTs this last August, which apparently he did.” She frowned. “Why didn’t you take it then?”
He sighed. “I may have been here, but I didn’t learn a thing. And I would have thought the same thing about Malfoy.” He thought it over. “But given how some of the students are, it probably is better that he isn’t here.”

Seamus was looking for the place he always went to drink. Trouble came with the fact that he was more than a little in his cups already and he wasn’t entirely certain where he was. He collided with a chest, stumbling back and mumbled an apology as he tried to walk around whoever it was. The person moved to the side with him, preventing the young drunk wizard to go around them. He looked up to the man and blanched at the sight of Lucius Malfoy watching him intently.
“You are in mourning,” Lucius said quietly. “As are many people these days.” He reached over and took the fire whiskey from him. “This is piss water, but it gets the job done I suppose.”
“Why are you doing this?” Seamus demanded. “Give me that back and leave me alone. Haven’t you done enough to me?”
Lucius was silent a moment. “How was she killed?”
“Killing curse, as if you didn’t know.”
“When?”
Seamus blinked at him. “Just before the battle here.”
“Where was she killed?”
“She’s dead! It doesn’t matter how! She’s gone and you did it!” he charged at Lucius, who caught him easily.
But instead of stopping him, he allowed him to hit him. The strikes were weak, but still managed to hurt now and again. Seamus pulled away weeping as he went, falling against the nearest stonewall.
“My wand was broken, did you know that?” he asked the younger wizard, who didn’t say anything, but did lift his head—a clear indication that he was listening. “The dark lord did it. True, I had some tricks up my sleeve, but it would have meant the death of my family if I attempted anything. I had hostages in my ancestral home, people being tortured for a wand I thought was a myth, and a madman…” He shuddered. “A madman who would kill anyone for any reason and, more times than not, for no reason at all.” Lucius sighed. “I haven’t an excuse to give. An apology at this point would sound trite.” He went over and leaned against the wall next to Seamus. “So where was she killed?”
“Why do you want to know so badly?” Seamus hissed.
“Grief needs to be expressed,” he told him.
“And you would know this because?”
“It’s not my place to say.” Lucius stood up straighter. “You don’t want to speak to me. Understandable. But you need to speak to someone or else it will tear you apart.”
“I-I…” But he started sobbing and couldn’t get the words out.
“One last question. Would your mother want you getting drunk and hurting yourself as you have been?”
Seamus melted down the wall. He was crying into his hands and unable to speak. Quietly Lucius slipped back into the shadows, but didn’t leave as he kept watch over the grieving wizard.

Hi! It's time for the answer to the last review sing-a-long!! The answer was "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" by Smashing Pumpkins. Cookies and BBQ sauce go out to Whisperwhite, rainie, Morgana, margaritama, and lilashannah. Sorry pandabear_08 and nonentity, but the song isn't "Rat in a Cage". This song is a prime example of just because they repeat certain words quite a bit that doesn't make it the title. And that, pandabear_08, is what made guessing this song more difficult. crysta656, I knew you knew the song, but you never answered! If I missed anyone, I'm sorry.
Time for the next review sing-a-long! "When we were young and our hearts were full of reviews, you used to say live and let review (you know you did, you know you did, you know you did)" I don't own this song either, but if you can guess the song and the group that performed it, I'm sending out shortbread cookies this time! Thanks again and please review!
