Chapter Seventeen - Azkaban
Mr. Stone immediately apparated Olivia back to the estate, where he explained more about Lucius’ incarceration. “It is very difficult to get into Azkaban unless you are a prisoner. Family visits are not encouraged.”
“But they aren’t prohibited?” Olivia asked anxiously.
“No, not prohibited,” Mr. Stone replied.
“Then find me a way to get there as soon as possible,” she said. “I need to see him and know he’s okay.” She knew he was not okay, but didn’t want to tell Mr. Stone that. Lucius’ mind was being bombarded somehow and he was barely holding out against the force hurting him. Olivia had to get to him soon. She was suffering with him, and only her years of experience as an empath were giving her any shielding ability at all. But soon it wouldn’t be enough for her either.
Olivia picked Mr. Stone’s brain on the subject of Azkaban and what it was like. He gave her the unwelcome news that Lucius had been sentenced to five years in prison. She nearly collapsed at that. They would never be able to survive that long apart.
Mr. Stone worked on getting her through to Azkaban but it still took almost two weeks for the initial permission to come through. When Mr. Stone told her she could go, she assembled the small array of necessities for Lucius she had organized and asked Mr. Stone to apparate her as close to the prison as possible. He had to use a few stops along the way because the prison was so far north. Finally, they arrived at the strip of land in northern Scotland closest to the prison island in the North Sea. Past the end of a small fishing village there was a hidden inn for the magic community that provided rough accommodations for those few who visited the inmates on the island.
Mr. Stone made contact with the Warden for the prison, alerting him that Mrs. Malfoy was there to see her husband. The Warden allowed them to apparate into his office. “Mrs. Malfoy, Mr. Stone.” The Warden greeted them both warily. “Why have you come?”
“I wish to see my husband,” Olivia said, “He disappeared and I was told he’s here now. I’m very worried about him.”
The Warden knew Olivia had been cleared of charges because he had made a cell ready for her and now it wasn’t needed. “I’m sorry, you can’t see him.”
“We were told we had permission. Is there a legal reason why Mrs. Malfoy cannot visit her husband?” asked Mr. Stone.
“No, but we don’t allow visitors much here,” the Warden replied.
“You don’t allow them or they just don’t want to come?” asked Olivia shrewdly. “Is your hesitancy due to any real impediments or just the way the routine is here?”
The Warden was nonplused. It was mostly tradition and not any ruling that made him deny her. “It is dirty and cold and smelly and very unpleasant for a young lady,” he warned, trying to put her off. The Warden liked his lazy routine and didn’t want to disturb it.
Olivia thought quickly, “Are you married, Mr…I’m sorry, I don’t know your name.”
“The Warden was taken aback. No one had ever asked him his name. “I’m married,” he said reluctantly.
“And can you talk to your wife easily? Does she live here with you?”
“Certainly not,” said the Warden. “And the name is Hart. Giles Hart.
Olivia thought his name might be a good omen. “I very much want to visit my husband regularly, but if I can’t always be here, I would like him to have a way to talk to me sometimes. In the U.S. the wizard community has a magic device besides owls and fireplaces for talking long distances with each other. We are very spread out in the United States, unfortunately.”
Warden Hart nodded warily. He didn’t know where this conversation was going.
Olivia continued, “I could also get you and your wife a set of the magical devices so you could talk with each other whenever you wished. I miss my husband, and I’m sure your wife must miss you when you’re not with her.”
Warden Hart had listened to his wife’s unhappiness with his position many times for just that reason. He said as a first salvo, “Are you trying to bribe me?”
Olivia smiled at him, feeling his eagerness. “I certainly don’t need to bribe you for something that I have a right to do anyway, do I? No, I am hoping to be able to talk to my husband occasionally with the device and I thought you would appreciate having the same opportunity with your wife.” Mr. Stone stayed silent and effaced himself by walking over to a window and looking out. He knew when it was going their way.
Olivia waited for Warden Hart to make up his mind. If he said yes, she would be able to talk to Lucius and likely visit him often. She would solve the problem of confessing to Lucius about her magicell phone when she came to it.
“If this device works as you say it does, then yes, I’m interested. And, as you say, you are allowed to visit your husband whenever you want. But you must alert me first and come to my office. I’ll take you to Malfoy myself. There are dementors roaming here that would harm you otherwise.” The Warden believed he had made an advantageous deal for something Mrs. Malfoy could have had anyway. The reality was they both had benefited.
