Chapter 17

disclaimer: blah, blah, blah, weve heard it all before.

“Bungie? Where are you?” she cried into the fog.

There was no answer. At least not from the person in question.

“He left.”

“Who are you?” Lialani spun and looked into a gaunt, thin face framed by swinging black hair. Black eyes shone with excitement as they looked down at her. As she gazed into them, they reminded her strikingly of Severus’.

“I’m Sirius Black.”

“Oh, you are? Why do you need to see me?”

“Because I know a way to get you out of here and back into the mortal world where you belong.”

“You do? Please, can you show me the way?”

“Of course. Can you just do me a small favor?”

“Definitely. What is it?”

“I’m Harry’s godfather. When you see him again do you think that you could tell him that I love him ad that I miss him?”

“No problem! Now, which way do we go?”

Sirius grinned and they started to walk. Well, actually, they started to float. Lialani continued to look around, fascinated with the spirit world. He laughed at her obvious surprise at her surroundings. She simply giggled.

A few minutes later, they happened upon an old-looking archway that had a black veil hanging in it, fluttering in an invisible breeze. Sirius gestured to the ominously fluttering veil.

“That’s how I came here. Since you’re not truly dead and your body is still in the mortal world, you should be able to walk right through and back to where you really belong.”

“Can’t you come too?” Lialani looked up at him, sadness for her new friend etched on her slightly transparent face.

“No, I was alive when I fell through but now I’m simply a spirit.”

“Oh.” Lialani headed for the veil, but on a sudden impulse, she reached back and grabbed Sirius’ hand. Ignoring his protests, she sailed through the veil.

“OW!” Sirius hit the floor with a hard thump.

Lialani looked behind her and was surprised to see a very solid Sirius sitting on the floor in front of the veil. He looked up at her and stood, rubbing his sore rear end.

“How did you do that?” he asked, shocked.

“I have no idea,” she replied, just as shocked as him.

“Hey, you there!” came a yell from behind them.

“Uh-oh,” Lialani murmured as a wizard in Ministry of Magic robes came running toward them.

“How did you get in here?” he demanded breathlessly.

“Um, we came in through the veil,” Lialani replied tentatively. She wasn’t sure if the man would believe her or not.

He didn’t. “Do you really think that I’m going to believe that? No one can just waltz back into the mortal world once they’ve crossed over.”

“I just did,” Sirius vouched for Lialani. This was not a very bright thing to do.

“Sirius Black!” the man shouted.

“Okay, now we’re in big trouble,” Lialani said and trem ner nervously.

“Don’t worry, I still have my wand. We can Apparate,” Sirius said reassuringly, reaching into his robes for his wand.

“Hello, I’m transparent! How am I supposed to Apparate with you if I’m still a spirit?”

“Right,” Sirius mumbled thoughtfully. “That’s going to be a problem.”

The man rushed out of the room. Lialani looked after him and a thought occurred to her.

“If I’m transparent, I can float through solid objects. So why don’t you Apparate to the front of the building and I’ll float through walls and ceilings until I make it there too. Can you hide until I get there?” Lialani asked.

“Yes. I’m an Animagus so I can turn into a dog. When you get out there, if you see a big black dog you’ll know it’s me,” Sirius replied and with a pop, he was gone.

Lialani glanced around. She was seemingly alone. She sped off, whipping through walls and ceilings, pausing only to see if she was in the main entrance hall. After a few minutes of rooms and shocked faces flying past, she was at the front entrance. She floated through the wall she assumed to be facing the Muggle street. She was right. Instantly, a loud ‘woof’ met her ears. A big, black, shaggy dog ran up to her. She giggled, knowing that it was Sirius. The dog bounded out of sight around a corner into an alley and two seconds later Sirius emerged.

“Let’s go. Where is your body? Hogwarts?” Sirius asked.

“No, it’s at St. Mungo’s,” she replied.

“Off we go. I’m going to change back into the dog because I don’t want anyone to recognize me and report me. Just follow the dog.”

The girl nodded. Sirius returned to the alleyway to transform. Lialani closed her eyes for a moments rest. A loud bark startled her and she opened her eyes and was confronted with the familiar black-furred four-legged animal. He barked again and started to run down the street. She followed instantly. They wound their way through downtown London, dodging people and shopping stands and cars. No one seemed to notice that there was a ghost flying smoothly after a large black dog, although I’m sure that quite a few people noticed a flash of cold pass through as Lialani rushed through them. Finally, they reached the entrance to St. Mungo’s. They passed through the glass and immediately the waiting room of St. Mungo’s shimmered into view around them.

“I’m sorry, miss, but animals are not allowed in here,” said the plump witch behind the desk, looking a bit shaken that a spirit was there, and was being closely guarded by a big black shaggy dog.

“Fine,” Lialani answered and knelt down. She whispered something in the dog’s perked ear and the dog trotted out. Almost instantly, a man hurried back in. He had brown hair tinted with red, burning brown eyes flecked with gold, and a rosy complexion. He was tall and slim but bulging muscles could be seen underneath his faded black robes. He rushed up to the desk and scared the living daylights out of the witch behind it.

“We need to get to Lialani Turowsky immediately!” he exclaimed.

“She’s in a coma right now so there really is no point,” the witnswenswered, her tone trembling slightly with nervousness.

“Can I see her?” he asked heatedly, his eyes burning even brighter.

“Yes, yes, go ahead,” she replied meekly.

“Thank you,” he said, instantly calm. “Whes shs she?”

The witchtledtled off Lialani’s room number and immediately the man Apparated. Lialani floated up to the desk. The witch looked at her apprehensively.

“What do you need, spirit-er-miss?” she asked.

“What room did you say I-she was in?” Lialani inquired.

The witch repeated it. Lialani nodded her thanks and she glided up through the ceiling. The witch stared after heatchatching as the last of her vanished through the ceiling.

“Lialani! In here!” The man with the brown hair waved her over to a room at the end of the hall.

She slipped through the air towards and behind him into the room. It was scary to see herself laying there, looking as though she was dead. A thought occurred to her.

“Oh, man, I didn’t die when I came out of the spirit realm, did I?” she asked worriedly. “And who are you?”

The man brandished his wand. Brown eyes flickered into black orbs. He shook his head fiercely and his hair seemed to shimmer as waves of black replaced the chocolate locks. The muscular look was toned down slightly but the robes didn’t change. His face thinned and the skin became a little sallow. Sirius grinned, delighted with his trick.

“Sirius! It’s you!” The gleeful spirit clapped excitedly. “I thought I told you to just wait outside!”

“Well, I wanted to see if it works or not,” Sirius replied. “Besides, what makes you think I’m going to listen to a sixteen-year-old? Albus is lucky that I listen to him!”

Lialani giggled. Suddenly, she thought of something. “How do I get into my body?”

“I think you go ahead and just jump right into yourself. Try that,” Sirius replied uncertainly.

Lialani nodded and leaped into the air. She executed a perfect swan dive and landed right into her body. Immediately, the real Lialani shot up, choking and sputtering. She was back.
