Chapter 15

~ The nightmare before Christmas ~

She glides from the last steps and she is flanked by Red. They’re talking amicably and somehow she just glows. Her laugh floats back to his ears and it causes goosebumps to break on his skin.

As they pass a window her hair shines softly against the first rays of sun of this December morning.

She seems less worried then the days before. Carefree. Yes, she glows.

Tonight is the night of the dance. They pulled it off. All preparations were made. It was finished.

It made her happy. And it made him happy as well, although he never would say.

She was making her way towards the Great Hall. She shook her head towards Weaslette and looked up.Their eyes met. He saw something flash in her depths. It pulled at his heart.

His heartbeat sped up and he wondered why. This girl shouldn’t effect him this much. But he just couldn’t break the stare. His eyes were glued to hers.

“Stop staring Malfoy. This is getting disturbing.”

Malfoy snapped his head back towards Blaise.

His dark-haired house mate was looking at him knowingly.

He quircked his eyebrow at Blaise.

“Are you insinuating that I’m staring at the mudblood?”

Malfoy narrowed his eyes.

“I’m not insinuating anything! Don’t be pathetic, Malfoy. I can see you staring.

And I can tell you it makes me sick!” He made a wild gesture with his hand.

“Last year you wouldn’t give her the time of day. But now…I can’t even begin to imagine why things have changed.”

Malfoy looked over at Granger. She stood with Weaslette, just a few paces away, lingering at the heavy doors.

“Things haven’t changed! Except your obvious delusional state!” Malfoy spat.

“ I still hate everything about her with my whole being. You don’t have any clue what it must be like to share living quarters with her!”

“Yes, that’s what you say.

But it isn’t so much your words that have my insides crawl.

Its how you look at her. Your eyes betray you.”

Malfoy was silent. He knew Blaise was right. But what could he do?

He had felt different for some time now. But couldn’t place it. He just didn’t feel like himself.

He should have known it was her. Of course it would be her!

If Blaise could see. Then it was a matter of time. The rest would follow.

Blaise looked at Malfoy warily.

“Look.” He sighed.

“I don’t care what you have with the mudblood. But I can tell you that people will start to notice your strange behaviour.” Blaise looked around.

“Well not everyone….” He cocked his head towards Grabbe and Goyle who were throwing lemon drops into the air to catch them with their mouths.

“But some will eventually catch on. Ever since you’ve moved to the Head tower you act different.

And think of your reputation within the Slytherin walls if people think you’ve developed a soft spot for the mudblood.

Just consider this a friendly warning, Malfoy. You decide what to do with it.”

With these words Blaise walked away, through the doors of the Great Hall.

Friendly warning my ass. Blaise words were meant to cause uproar.

Arrogant little bastard never speaks unless it was ill news.

How very Slytherin, a true snake never spits unless it releases its poison.

Malfoy leaned his head back against the cool wall. He had to think.

Thinks were spinning out of control.

Malfoy was so heavy in thought that he didn’t see Hermione approach.

When he looked up she was in front of him. To his great horror her lips moved.

He didn’t follow her words, or the glitter in her eyes. He panicked.

Quickly he pushed her away from the Great Hall.

“How many times do I have tell you! Don’t. Ever. Speak to me in public!”

She stepped back in shock. His jaw was clenched and his eyes were narrowed.

“I can’t have people talk about ME socializing with such a common mudblood.”

His tone was disdanefull. It forced horrible shivers down her spine. She couldn’t speak, her mouth hanging open in silent horror.

“If I want to see you it be in our common room. You can wait for me there.”

He pushed her harsh into the wall and left for the Great Hall.

Hermione stayed behind, forcing down the tears that were pricking behind her eyes.

She was just going to thank him for his input in the Christmas Ball. Damn that bastard to hell!

She had trouble breathing and quickly dashed inside the nearest girls bathroom.

Inside her tears fell freely. Her insides twisted violently. She was going to be sick.

She pushed open the first cubicle and slammed it shut behind her. She closed the toilet seat and sat herself down. Her arms held her stomach as her head leaned against the cool surface of the door.

Hermione stayed that way until her breathing returned to normal.

She didn’t eat that morning.

Late in the afternoon Hermione retreated to her dorm.

She had felt queasy all day. She felt tired and didn’t want to get ready for the Ball.

Her legs never felt that heavy. They were like lead when she climbed the last stairs.

Malfoy was lounging on the couch when she entered the common room.

She kept her eyes focussed on her dorm and determinedly crossed the common room.

“Granger, can I….” He tries.

“DON’T. TALK.TO. ME! “

She glares at him for a minute.

Her eyes were like fire, she was so angry. Anger bubbling like lava, mixed with hurt, all smouldering just beneath the surface.

Malfoy took in her face. She had been crying. He could tell.

Her hair slapped wildly around her head as she turns again.
He wanted to say something. Anything. I try to open my mouth and she cut him down immediately.

“Don’t you dare!” She says without turning to face me.

She sprints up her dorm stairs and slames the door shut.

Malfoy stands and leaves for his own dorm.

Better get ready. Better to get it over with.
