Chapter Sixteen – The Council
Lucius didn’t return to the estate that night or the next or the next. No owls arrived and Olivia didn’t know where to turn. She was getting frantic. He had never left her so long before and certainly never without word of his general itinerary. His emotions were rioting with fear and anger, though, so she knew he was alive.
On the fifth day, the Minister of Magic appeared at the gates of the estate with two other men. She was relieved but also terrified to see him. Had something happened to her husband? Cognizant of Lucius’ rules, she activated his special protection spell for the estate sealing it against ingress even from permitted visitors, selected the drawing room as the only accessible space, and let them apparate there. The Minister lost no time.
“Olivia Malfoy, you are hereby arrested in the name of the Magic Council for crimes against our community. You will come with us immediately to answer these charges.” The Minister touched Olivia and apparated her out of the estate and into a small cell in the bowels of the Ministry.
“Where’s Lucius?” Olivia cried, but the Minister had deposited her and left without allowing her any time to ask her panicked question. The small cell was cold, and she hadn’t had a chance to even get her cloak. Luckily, her magicell phone was attached to her waist and she immediately called her father, telling him what had happened. She tried a small spell to keep warm and found basic functions were allowed but she couldn’t leave the cell.
Half a day went by before anyone came to get her. She was brought before a council of officials on a raised dais, including Albus Dumbledore, who gazed at her gravely. The Minister in the middle said, “You are charged with conspiracy against the Ministry and aiding and abetting a criminal. How do you plead?”
Olivia was dumbfounded. “What conspiracy? What criminal? I don’t understand.” She asked, “Where is my husband? Do you know? He’s missing and I’m very worried about him.” She looked at the officials as she spoke.
“Your husband was charged and sentenced for his criminal actions here in the Ministry three nights ago. He brought He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named into the vaults of the Ministry, and attempted to kill Harry Potter while stealing or demolishing many priceless artifacts. His estate and all his possessions are forfeit to the Ministry for his traitorous actions.”
Another official spoke. “And you helped him in his plans. How do you plead?”
“I haven’t done anything. Where is Lucius?” Olivia was looking rapidly from one face to the next on the council. “Is he okay?” Her gaze stopped at Dumbledore. She implored him silently to help her.
Dumbledore said, “There is an easy way to solve the question of her involvement, if she is willing. We can use the Pensieve and sift through her memories for any wrongdoing.”
“Anything,” she said. She’d heard of the Pensieve and knew all her activities with Lucius could be called up. She wished them joy of viewing her lovemaking with him, but didn’t care. All she wanted was to be let loose so she could find her husband.
At that moment, a man appeared in the court. He went to Olivia’s side and addressed the council. “Has Mrs. Malfoy been told her rights? She’s American and probably knows little about our system.” The man turned and greeted Olivia, telling her he was Lucius’ lawyer, Mr. Stone, and he would stand with her during the trial.
He spoke again to the Minister, “Attempts have been made by your office to enter Mrs. Malfoy’s home and abscond with property and papers. You will desist immediately.”
The Minister replied haughtily, “That property no longer belongs to Lucius Malfoy. He forfeited it when he committed his criminal acts.”
“On the contrary, the estate, and all business interests have not belonged to Lucius Malfoy since his marriage. All of it was turned over to Olivia’s father, as trade for Olivia’s hand in marriage. Olivia has been acting with power of attorney for her father, but all possessions belong to James White. It’s all quite ironclad legally.”
There were gasps from several members of the council. The Malfoy holdings were worth millions. The Minister motioned over a clerk and whispered to him. The clerk left the court.
Olivia caught up the hand of the lawyer, “Mr. Stone, where is Lucius?”
“I’m afraid he’s been sent to Azkaban, my dear. I will try to get you there to see him as soon as possible, but it may be a while,” Mr. Stone said sympathetically.
“Azkaban is your prison, right? Where is it? How can I get there? I want to go right away.” Olivia now knew why Lucius was giving off so much fear and anger. “Can you get him out of there?”
“I don’t think that’s possible. He was caught in the Ministry vaults with some other extremely dangerous criminals. Some of them had already escaped Azkaban once. Everyone captured has been sent back there now.” Mr. Stone added, “Lucius was tried very quickly so the Ministry could confiscate his holdings, but Lucius protected you against his activities by giving everything to your father for safekeeping if anything happened to him.”
Olivia didn’t want to discuss her father’s complicity right there, so she merely faced the council and said, “I’m ready for the Pensieve. I have nothing to hide.”
A shallow glass bowl was brought in and Dumbledore stepped down from the dais. He went to Olivia and said, “I’m sorry, Mrs. Malfoy. This seems the fastest way to absolve you of the charges against you. Are you ready?” He pulled out his wand.
Olivia nodded, and Dumbledore began removing all her thoughts pertaining to her husband. He handed the bowl to the officials who looked into the bowl one by one. Soon the council started to fidget. They were certainly getting an x-rated show, but absolutely no indication of Olivia’s involvement in Lucius’ association with the Dark Lord. She didn’t even seem to know who the Dark Lord was. Lucius had kept her cocooned on the estate for a very good reason. All the council learned was that Olivia loved Lucius totally and she liked to show it physically. Dumbledore quietly avoided the memories that might betray Olivia as an empath. The Ministry didn’t need that knowledge.
Finally, even the most suspicious members of the council had had enough. They looked very uncomfortable, and most wouldn’t meet her eyes, but they brought in a verdict of ‘not guilty’. Olivia was free to return to her estate. The Ministry would examine her father’s legal claim to the properties of the Malfoy family. In the meantime, no more invasive action would be taken. No apologies were offered, but Dumbledore winked at her when his back was turned to the council.
