“Severus! Severus!” she cried, her eyes wide with terror and she was wringing her hands.
Severus immediately burst out of the curtains, Lialani looking out after him with big, frightened eyes.
“What happened?” he asked frantically, unnerved by the fear in her eyes.
“Lucius and Draco Malfoy are holding Albus captive in his office,” she replied, out of breath and terrified.
Lialani gasped.
“They refuse to let him go unless Lialani is brought to them,” she continued.
Severus’ jaw dropped. Internally, he struggled between leaving Albus in such danger to keep Lialani safe or saving Albus and putting Lialani in extreme danger. He simply couldn’t decide.
Lialani, on the other hand, had come to a decision as soon as Minerva revealed what they wanted.
“I’m going to them,” she declared and made to get up from the bed.
Severus whirled around and pushed her back down, provoking an indignant squeal from her.
“I’m not gonna sit here and do nothing!” she yelled.
“Yes, you are!” Severus thundered.
“No, I’m not! I’m not leaving Professor Dumbledore in that much danger!”
“I will deal with it!”
“But I want to help!” She looked up at him defiantly, unwilling to back down.
“I have a plan,” Minerva interrupted their argument.
“What?” Severus asked instantly, snapping his head to the side to see her.
“Why don’t we use Miss Turowsky’s powers to knock them out?”
“I can’t limit my powers to individual people,” Lialani said.
“You did that night when Lucius attacked you,” Severus pointed out.
“I don’t know why,” Lialani argued.
“Why not?”
“Because I don’t, okay?”
“Tone, Miss Turowsky, tone.”
“So-rry,” she snapped.
“Tone!” he yelled. This was the other thing, other than her bubbly act, that really got on his nerves.
She quieted, knowing that she was aggravating him. For some reason, aggravating him wasn’t as fun as aggravating other teachers. Irritating Trelawney, for instance, was loads of fun and she couldn’t get enough of it. But aggravating Snape wasn’t that fun anymore. Maybe because she was engaged to him and it’s better not to get on your fiancé’s nerves or that will call for a much-tensed life.
“Thank you. Now, I think Professor McGonagall has a very good idea. We will just have to hope that you don’t hurt Professor Dumbledore too much,” Severus said.
“I can’t use my powers knowing that Professor Dumbledore will get hurt!” she objected.
“You can and I’m afraid that you’ll have to.”
She groaned and crossed her arms.
“Now, Miss Turowsky, we do not need a temper tantrum right now,” Minerva scolded.
She nodded reluctantly and got up. After wobbling for a minute with Severus’ hand on her shoulder to steady her she slipped into her flip-flops and announced, “Okay, I’m ready.”
“You’re not tired at all, are you, Miss Turowsky?” asked Poppy, not relishing the thought of her being brought up unconscious as it usually happens.
“No, I’m perfectly fine,” she replied cheerfully.
“Let’s go,” Severus commanded. He took Lialani’s elbow and led her out of the infirmary.
Harry looked after them and was surprised to see Ron poke his head back in the doorway.
“Did McGonagall say that they have Dumbledore?” he asked.
Harry nodded.
“Lialani is going to help?”
He nodded again.
“And once againre sre stuck here doing nothing,” Ron spat and came in to sit next to Harry.
“I know for a fact that you received homework this weekend. Have you done it yet?” Poppy asked.
“Oh, bugger, no, I haven’t. I’ve gotta get that done,” Ron replied, panicking and running out of the room.
“At least I have a week to do mine,” Harry grinned.
“And a week’s worth of homework along with that,” Poppy said. “I’ve arranged for Miss Granger to bring all the work from your cls tos to you each day.”
Harry grabbed a pillow and put it to his face to block the yell that burst out. Poppy smiled and mock-shook her finger at him. A few minutes later, Hermione came tearing in, thick chestnut curls whipping out behind her as she did. Her eyes were wild with fear and her cheeks flushed. Following her was Severus and in his arms was a bleeding and choking Lialani. Behind him was Albus, wand held high as two floating stretchers made their way in after him.
“What happened?” Poppy cried. “Don’t tell me she’s unconscious!”
“No, she’s wide awake and I think she’s dying!” Severus was in full-blown hysteria mode. His eyes were big and round. Magnified in them was the same fear in Hermione’s eyes; the kind of fear that was provoked only by truly scary life-altering events.
“Bring her here now!” Poppy exclaimed and with a sweep of her arm all the bedding and pillows tumbled off a nearby bed, scattering all over the floor.
Severus laid Lialani gently on the bed. She coughed up a puddle of blood and it splattered down the front of her previously bright tank top. Ron burst into the room and joined Hermione at Lialani’s side. He didn’t dare go to the other side where Severus was standing, looking as though he had seen Death himself.
“My Gods, what happened to her?” he asked. “She isn’t dying, is she?” Fear similar to Hermione’s and Severus’ flared in his eyes.
“She is,” Poppy replied mourny. “y. “Her body is slowly shutting down. She needs to go to St. Mungo’s. We don’t have the technology she needs.”
“I’ll Apparate her there,” Severus said quickly. He grabbed her back into his arms and with a crack that sounded like a gunshot, they disappeared, leaving behind a puddle of blood that had dripped down from the numerous cuts on Lialani’s body.
“Will she be alright?” came Harry’s voice.
“I don’t know, Mr. Potter, I really don’t know,” Poppy answered, eyes gray and cloudy as she stared at the spot where the two had vanished.
-----------------
“I am Severus Snape and this is Lialani Turowsky. She has been severely injured,” Severus nearly shouted at the clerk at the inquiry desk.
“Would it be any type of magical injury, sir?” she asked coolly.
“I’m not sure. She was hurt at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and the resident nurse said that her body is slowly shutting down and she would need to come here,” Severus replied.
“Alright. You need to go up to Spell Damage where they can check her for any kind of spell damage and they’ll tell you what to do from there,” the witch said. “That would be the fourth floor.”
Severus simply nodded and sprinted to the staircase. He looked disdainfully at the stairs and Apparated to the fourth floor. A Healer spotted them and her eyes nearly bugged out at the sight of all the blood dripping from the now convulsing figure of Lialani.
“I’m Hazel Nostrodom and I can tell from just looking at this unfortunate young lady that this is not an injury ca by by a spell,” she said.
“I don’t care what caused it, I just want it fixed! Madam Pomfrey said that her body is shutting down!” Severus yelled and Hazel jumped.
“Calm down, sir, there’s an empty room at the end of the corridor. Bring her there,” Hazel commanded and led him to the room.
Severus placed her on the bed and Hazel stepped up to the side of it. She held her wand over Lialani and ran it up and down the length of her body. Immediately, a few pieces of paper floated to the ground in front of Hazel. She crouched down to see them and gasped.
“She has Shuddon Syndrome. Her body really is just shutting down. There isn’t a real cure for it. We can only give her potions.”
Severus put his face in his hands. “Will she live?”
“Yes. She will come out of this alive. The potions we’ll give her will just help along her body as it repairs itself.”
“How long will this take?”
“It all depends on her, to tell the truth. It depends on the speed at which her body repairs itself.”
“Start now.”
“Alright.” Hazel pushed a button on the wall and immediately a small, stocky wizard appeared.
“Get me a Body Repair Potion and a Blood Replenishing Potion right now,” she said and the wizard nodded. “Sir, there are papers that need to be signed and arrangements to be made and costs to deal with.”
“I will deal with those now. I am her fiancé so I can take care of most of the paperwork but her parents will need to be contacted as she is still underage. As for costs, money is no object. I will pay for everything.”
“Okay. Just wait a minute before we leave, we have to wait for my assistant to get back with the potions.” Hazel nodded at the door.
In a minute, he was at the door with two small jars and a goblet clutched in his hands. He handed both items to Hazel. She thanked him and walked over to Lialani. Lialani tilted her head back as she sensed the goblet near her mouth and drank the vile-tasting liquid. This was repeated with the second potion. She settled back into her pillows. Hazel ran one more test just to make sure that the potion didn’t have any negative effects on Lialani, and when Severus saw her face, he knew that the news wasn’t going to be good.
“Oh, dear,” she muttered to herself.
“What? What happened?” Severus asked, worried.
“She seems to have fallen into a coma,” Hazel replied. “And this is very rare indeed. Most times the patient’s body repairs itself while the patient is sleeping and the patient is allowed a fairly normal daytime life here in the hospital.”
“Is it bad?”
“Well, really, sir, everything depends on the patient when it comes to an illness like this.”
“Even though she is in a coma, will she still live?”
“Yes, most likely.”
Severus sighed with relief. “Now for the paperwork.”
They left, leaving behind Lialani, who at the moment was somewhere very, very far away.
------------------------
“Where am I?” she wondered aloud.
All around her, people were drifting in and out of the soft, flowing fog. Stars shone brightly overhead and when she looked down at her feet, she was shocked to see that she had no feet, just a ghostly wisp of a tail, and there wasn’t really a floor, only a fluffy white cloud.
“What is this place?” she asked, mainly to herself. She didn’t really expect an answer but she got one anyway.
“This is the spirit world,” came a deep voice.
Lialani quickly spun around and was face-to-face with her great-grandfather. She squealed with delight and hugged him tightly.
“Bungie!” she cried excitedly. “What are you doing here? Where am I? What is this place?”
“I told you that, Pebbles. You’re in the spirit world. This is where everyone goes when they have died,” Bungie replied.
“I died?” she screamed.
“Oh, dear Gods, heavens no! You’re in a coma, Pebbles. You don’t really belong here since you haven’t died, but you’re here.”
“But I’m not dead.”
“No, you’re not.”
“Well, that’s a relief.”
“Yes, it is. Now, there is someone who wants to see you, Pebbles.”
“Who is he?”
“Sirius Black.”
