Chaos

Chaos

Hermione’s heart dropped to her stomach. Had Severus just said what she thought? She looked at Ron. His face was ghost white. Suddenly Harry’s face twisted into rage.

“I am going to kill you, Severus Snape,” he said, in an eerily calm voice, drawing his wand again.

“Harry, wait, no---” Hermione began to protest.

“Hermione, first he kills Dumbledore, and then he rapes you, putting his filth into your body, and you want me to just let him go??” Harry asked her, voice rising.

“Harry, no, you don’t understand--”Hermione began, her face burning.

“Are you saying he didn’t rape you?” Ron asked quietly.

Hermione flushed violently.

“No, Mr. Weasley. Incidentally, I did not rape her,” Severus sneered.

Ron lunged at Severus, arms out, as though he meant to strangle him.

“Ron, no!” Hermione shouted, attempting to get between them. Ron knocked her over in his attempts to get to Snape.

“Now look what you have done, you insolent filth,” Severus growled, helping Hermione to her feet again.

“I can’t believe this,” Harry said, running his fingers through his hair exasperatedly. “He’s a murderer, Hermione! A murderer.”

“Harry you don’t understand, he’s innocent,” Hermione protested.

“Are you telling me that I am blind, Hermione? That I am delusional? I saw him, remember? I was there!”

Ron stood there, looking murderous, at a complete loss for words.

“No, Harry, you just don’t get it! There is more than you think! I have proof!”

“What, supplied by him?” Harry spat, gesturing toward Severus.

“No, from Dumbledore himself!” she said, tears beginning to form in her hysteria. “Severus, show him,” she pleaded.

“Oh it’s Severus now, is it?” Ron spat.

Severus ignored Ron’s comment and removed a tiny white box from his robes. He tapped it with his wand, and it returned to its original size. He opened the lid and handed Harry the letter with his name on it, along with the labeled vials.

Harry opened the letter and began to read:

Harry,

If you are reading this, then I am undoubtedly dead. I want you to know that I was aware of my impending demise, and I wish I could have told you about it. You were not completely off the track in thinking that young Draco was in fact, up to something. Professor Snape was put into a situation beyond his control, in which he was forced to take the Unbreakable Vow with Narcissa Malfoy.

You see, Harry, Voldemort had a task for young Mr. Malfoy, a task which I am certain he gave him as a means to punish his father. He never expected the boy to succeed in killing me. Yes Harry, that was Draco’s task: to kill me. Narcissa Malfoy, in her grief begged Professor Snape to take the Vow with her, promising her that he would aid Draco, and if necessary, complete the task for him.

So you see, Harry, there was no real choice in the matter. I was able to pass what I knew to you, so in essence, my role no longer became vital to the Order. Professor Snape’s role still remains wholly vital, and I trust that you understand and respect that fact, Harry. In our lives we are sometimes made to work together with people we find less than likeable, but it is in working with these same people that we can overcome any obstacles.

I have said before, and I will say again, Harry, that love is the strongest magic. That was the best lesson your mother ever taught you, and I trust that you will keep your head in this. Dark times are upon you, Harry, and anger and hatred are the path to the dark side. I believe that there is a horcrux in Godric’s Hollow. Find something there that would symbolize great innocence, great love. Tom would have thought it amusing to put something so dark and evil into something so pure and good.

Harry, I want you to know that I never viewed you as anything less than a son to me, contrary to what I may have shown you. I am sure you understand it would have been inappropriate for me to treat you above the other students. In my death, I do not think it inappropriate any longer. I know you can do this, Harry. I know you can find the horcruxes and kill Tom. You are the only one who can do this, and I believe you are ready.

Remember Harry, love conquers all.

Love Even in Death,

Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, Order of Merlin First Class, Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Surrogate father to one unsurpassable Harry James Potter

When Harry finished reading the letter, his hands were shaking, and tears were streaming down his face.

“Enough of this. I’ll kill him then,” Ron barked, making to go for Severus once more.

“Leave him alone, Ron,” Harry said quietly.

Ron looked at Harry incredulously.

“He’s innocent. Says so right here,” Harry said plainly.

“But Harry! You saw--”

“I know what I saw, Ron,” Harry interjected. “I just didn’t see what I thought I saw,” he said, green eyes fixed on his former professor.

“What? Never mind that, he still put his hands on my girl, and that is enough for me to kill him anyway,” Ron growled.

“Put that away before you kill yourself, Weasley,” Severus said calmly.

“Ron, I,” Hermione began. “You don’t understand,” she stammered. “This,” she said, rubbing her belly, “this happened before you and I got together.”

“What do you mean?”

“I am two months pregnant,” she said softly.

“How long have you known?”

“I found out the day of your brother’s wedding,” she said, her eyes glittering with tears.

“You knew from the off that it was him?”

“No. I found that out the next day,” she said a tear sliding down to her lips.

“And I suppose you didn’t think this was important enough to tell me about??”

“Ron, please, I--”

“You made love to me last night, and you knew! You knew that you were carrying his filth in your body!”

“Made love to him?” Severus repeated quietly.

“She is my girlfriend you greasy git,” Ron spat.

“Enough!! Both of you!! I--” Hermione said, as her face began to pale. “Don’t feel so well,” she finished, sliding to the floor.

“I think we better get to Hogwarts right now,” Harry said, as Severus scooped up an unconscious Hermione in his arms.

“Yes, that would be prudent, Mr. Potter,” Severus said quickly as he tightened his grip on the mother of his child.

“I think this is the horcrux,” Harry said, holding up the bear.

“Bring it then, we may not have much time,” Severus said, worry escaping in his voice.

They apparated separately to the gates of Hogwarts, Ron, Harry, and Severus with Hermione.

“Professor, perhaps until we can get safely into McGonagall’s office it would be wise for you to wear a glamour,” Harry said.

“Or he can just waltz in there as his slimy self and let everyone beat him to death,” Ron spat venomously.

Severus scowled deeply at Ron’s remark, and at his own carelessness about the glamour.

He turned his wand on himself and cast a glamour on himself, looking like Arthur Weasley.

“You bastard! How dare you disguise yourself as my father,” Ron growled.

“Mr. Weasley, who the bloody hell else am I going to be?” he spat back.

“Ron, he’s right. Let’s just go in and get Hermione help,” Harry said insistently, leading them through the wards.

They practically raced up to the doors of the castle, and flew up to the hospital wing, all hoping Hermione was going to be alright.

“My word, what the devil is going on here?” Poppy said, visibly flustered and thoroughly surprised at the unlikely gaggle of people who had just entered her office.

“She was hit with an illusion-dropping stunner, Poppy, and then she just, passed out,” Severus said.

The glamour only disguised his body, but not his voice

“What is the meaning of this?? Severus?? Is that you??” she screamed.

Severus dropped the glamour.

The mediwitch shrieked.

“There is really no time to explain right now, Madam Pomfrey,” Harry said hastily.

Looking utterly terrified, Poppy began to inspect Hermione. After a moment, she pulled a vial of pepperup potion out of the pocket of her robes and poured it into Hermione’s mouth.

“The stunner did not affect her, something else did. What in the name of Merlin is going on here?” She squealed. “The poor child passed out from stress!”

The three men looked at the floor guiltily.

“I am going for the Headmistress. You three have a lot of explaining to do,” she said sternly as Hermione began to awake.

“Where am I?” Hermione asked, as Poppy left the room

“You are at Hogwarts,” Severus told her. “You passed out.”

Hermione grabbed her stomach.

“Is the baby alright?”

“Fine, unfortunately,” Ron said coldly.

Hermione’s face fell.

“Ron, she told you it happened before you were going out. Give her a break, will you?” Harry said exasperatedly.

“Yeah that happened before, but what I want to know is how the hell it happened!”

“I guess I should be thanking you really, Mr, Weasley,” Severus sneered. “You see, if it were not for the fact that you are a complete idiot, Miss Granger would not be carrying my child at all.”

Severus,” Hermione hissed.

“It’s the truth, love,” Severus said innocently.

Ron shot Severus a murderous look.

“You may have gotten her pregnant, you greasy, loathsome excuse for a git, but she is still my girlfriend,” Ron barked at him, “and you will not be addressing her that way.”

“I believe that is a matter of opinion, Mr. Weasley,” Severus said. He tapped his wand on Hermione’s finger, causing the ring to appear.

Ron looked deeply wounded.

“H-Hermione?” He addressed her, pain in his jade eyes.

Hermione looked away.

“Did you fuck him?” Ron asked hotly.

Hermione’s face went red.

“No, you know, I already know the answer to that,” he said, tears forming. “You can have her,” he said to Severus. “She’s as filthy as you are.” He turned to leave, but nearly collided with McGonagall.

“What is going on here?!” She demanded In a tone that made everyone present stand up a little straighter.

“Professor,” there is a lot to say, so perhaps you should sit down,” Harry told her, motioning to Hermione’s cot.

McGonagall considered him for a moment before taking a seat.

The room was silent except for the sound of Harry’s voice recounting all that had happened, including Hermione’s pregnancy, and Severus handed her the box, save for what had his own name on it.

Minerva looked around the room, absorbing what she had just heard.

“This means that Severus, you are still a valuable asset to the Order, and getting you killed will do no one any good,” she said quietly.

“I think there is only one solution here,” she said, looking at first Hermione, then Ron. “Does anyone outside this room know about this pregnancy, or Miss Granger’s involvement with Professor Snape?”

“No,” Hermione and Severus said together.

“Then we shall keep it that way,” she said simply.

“Yeah, and how are you going to explain about that?” Ron asked coldly, pointing to Hermione’s swelling belly.

“Mr. Weasley,” Poppy scolded,” Professor Snape and Miss Granger’s daughter is not an object, or even at fault here!”

D-daughter?” Hermione asked, eyebrows raising into her hair.

“Well, yes, of course dear. I thought you said you took the pregnancy potion?”

“I-I did, b-but I--”

“Well, didn’t your stomach glow pink?”

“Well yes, but I just thought that--”

“It would have been blue if it was a boy, dear,” Poppy said, half laughing.

Minerva smiled.

“So far as anyone knows you and Mr. Weasley are in a happy, committed relationship, are you not?” She asked them.

“Yes,” Hermione said.

“Supposing you mean people outside of this room,” Ron said coolly.

“Yes, Mr. Weasley, that is in fact, what I meant,” Minerva said, matching his icy tone. “The only solution is, for the time being, to continue to allow people to think that.”

“Minerva, you can’t possibly mean---”

“Yes, Severus. Everyone outside this room needs to think that baby is the offspring of Mr. Weasley.”
