Chapter 14
Author’s Note: Hermione is going to be a bit dark. This doesn’t follow with OTP or HBP. Sirius Black is alive and in my story Severus is a pure blood. Just so you know.
Disclaimer: I don’t own anything you recognize. So please don’t sue.
Summery: It’s been six years since Hermione left Hogwarts. She’s been doing a secret mission for the Order. Suddenly she and Severus are thrown together. Will they be able to work together or will they end up killing each other? R/R
Author’s Note: This chapter is from Hermione’s mind. It tells of what is going on while she’s in the coma. Hope you enjoy!

Chapter 14
*Hermione’s Mind*
Hermione found herself in an open field. A thick mist whirling around her. She had no idea where she was or how she got there. The last thing she remembered was killing the fifth Death Eater and then feeling the final one grabbing her and slamming a dagger deep into her back.
“See you in hell mudblood” he had whispered.
It was Lucius Malfoy. Then everything had gone black. When she opened her eyes she was here. She tried calling out when she heard voices. She had heard Remus, then Severus, then Sirius. Then all had gone quiet.
“Hello Hermione.” a voice said.
“Who’s there! Show yourself!” Hermione yelled.
The mist in front of her began to take form. She soon found herself staring at the figure of James Potter. Hermione watched in shock as James began to walk toward her. He stopped about two feet from her and smiled gently.
“I’m dead. Aren’t I?” she asked.
“No. Not yet anyway. I’m here to help you get back to where you need to be. Back to the land of the living.” James answered.
“What is this place?” she asked.
“Limbo. In between life and death.” he answered.
He extended his hand for Hermione to take. She hesitated for a few seconds before placing her hand in his. James began walking and pulled Hermione with him. The mist parted and in front of them stood a door.
“In order for you to return, you are going to have to face your darkest memories and fight them. If you succeed you will return to where you belong.” James explained.
“And if I fail?” she questioned.
“You die.” he said simply.
Hermione nodded. The door opened and James led her through. Hermione gave a startled gasp as she saw what was in front of her. It was a clearing in a forest. She remembered this event and quite well. It was the first time she had ever shed blood. She looked at James.
“You must replay this event. Some of these memories will be exactly as they happened. Others, you will have the chance to change the outcome. Even though in reality, they have not changed. Do you understand?” he asked.
“So, certain things I will have the chance to fight back, when in truth I was unable to at the time?” she replied.
“Yes.” he answered.
Hermione nodded. She walked into the clearing while James stayed where he was. This particular event was clear in her mind. She had heard rumors of Death Eaters being near the village where the cottage was and she had gone to investigate. She walked up to the tree she had hid behind and looked before her. There were four Death Eaters.
“Here’s the plan, the Dark Lord wants us to set up a base here. He wants it set up here where we will be hidden from the Order and the Ministry. According to our sources there isn’t a single Order member within miles.” the Death Eater said.
Hermione drew on the feelings that she had felt at the time. She had felt fear, anger and courage coursing through her. She waited for the perfect moment. She had silently conjured up a sword and listened as another Death Eater spoke.
“Where do we being?” he asked.
“Here in this clearing. Let us get started.” the leader had answered.
Hermione choose that moment to attack. She jumped out from her hiding place and began the attack. She quickly drove her sword through the leader. While the others watched in shock she quickly took them out as well.
She decapitated a second and third then faced the final one. She could tell he was scared. She flipped behind him wrapped her arm around his neck and slammed the sword into his stomach and drew it up. The Death Eater gave a gurgled gasp as his innards spilled out and fell to the ground. Hermione tossed the body to the ground.
She looked down at herself. Her hands and cloths were stained with blood. Just as she had when this memory took place, she felt no guilt or remorse. She magically disappeared her sword and walked away.
“You are a natural.” James said as she walked over to him.
“What do you mean?” Hermione asked.
“You’re a natural killer. You have an instinct for it. It’s rare for anyone in the Order to have those instincts. Let alone a woman to have them.” James answered.
Hermione nodded. James waved his hand and the blood vanished from her hands, clothes and face. They began walking again. Another door appeared and the entered it. This time Hermione found herself back at the cottage. She didn’t recognize this memory right away. It wasn’t until she looked on the coffee table and saw the letter.
“But I didn’t fight or kill anyone in this?” Hermione said in confusion.
“I know, but not all of the memories are of you killing Hermione. You have buried a lot of emotions that you will need in this war. You must try and get those feelings back.” James replied.
Hermione thought she understood. She slowly walked over to the coffee table and picked up the letter. She slowly began to remember that letter. On shaking legs she walked over and picked up the letter. It was from Albus.
Dear Hermione,
I have just received word that the Weasley’s were killed. All but Ron who is currently on a mission with Tonks and Moody. Death Eaters attacked them while they were having a family dinner. Molly and Ginny were found beaten, raped and their throats slashed. Arthur, Bill, Charlie and Percy were also beaten raped and then decapitated. Fred and George were beaten raped and gutted.
It saddens me to have to be the one to tell you, but you had requested to know the details should something like this happen. The Death Eaters who did this were found and were killed when they engaged in a fight with the Aurors who found them. I know you would want to be here for the memorial service that will be held, but I plead with you to remain where you are.
I hate to ask that of you, but your research may be the very thing we need to end this war. Please Hermione, stay where you are.
Sincerely,
Albus
Hermione let her tears fall. When she had received the letter, she hadn’t cried, screamed nothing. This time, she let the emotion she had hidden come forth. She ripped up the letter and began screaming. The screams were that of pain and anger. She then took her emotions out physically. She grabbed the coffee table and threw it across the room.
It shattered as it hit the wall. She grabbed her dagger and began slashing up the furniture. First the couch, then the two arm chairs. The stuffing and springs of the cushions were sticking out from the frame of the chair.
She grabbed the different knick knacks on the fireplace mantle and began throwing them everywhere. Some hit the walls, some hit the windows and others hit the fireplace. She continued on for nearly twenty minutes before falling to her knees sobbing and exhausted. James appeared and knelt beside her and pulled her into his arms. Hermione buried her face in his chest and cried.
“Hermione, it’s all right. Don’t hold these emotions in as you did before.” James whispered.
“What…good…will it do…me to…feel this pain?” she sobbed.
“By releasing these emotions, it will make you stronger. Our emotions are what lets us know we are alive. They allow us to deal with the things that life throw at us. You will need that strength to get through this war.” James answered.
Hermione finally stopped crying. She waved her wand and repaired the damage she had caused. James helped her to her feet and led her to the couch. Hermione took a deep breath and faced him.
“Why am I having to go through this?” she asked.
“You have a lesson to learn Hermione. You must learn to stop holding back certain emotions. You need to know that showing grief and emotional pain is all right. It doesn’t make you weak.” James answered.
“I don’t know how. I’ve forgotten how.” she said.
“No you haven’t. Being with Snape has reawakened them. You are starting to feel again because of him. Don’t hide them. It is you holding back those emotions that is keeping you from letting him get close to you.” he answered.
“So what do I do?” she questioned.
“Don’t hold back. Tell him how you feel and let him know what you’ve been through. You know, you and he are alike more than you think.” he replied.
Hermione gave James an inquisitive look. He simply smiled and stood up, pulling her with him. It was time for her next challenge. She was ready. She had to get through this so she could return to Severus.
