“Well, now that we have official medical records, we can charge Mr. Malfoy,” Albus said as he strode into the castle five hours later.
“Yeah. Lialani, where did you get that mark?” Hermione asked.
When being examined, Lialani had finally revealed a mark that has been on her shoulder for as long as she can remember. Actually, she just remembered it today. It was a pure black winged horse. She was born with it.
“I was born with it there. No one has ever found out where it came from or how it got there or why it’s there,” Lialani replied, rubbing the shoulder it was on.
“Maybe it’s just a birthmark,” Severus said.
“That’s probably just what it is,” Lialani agreed. She yawned. “I’m tired. I’m going up to the infirmary to get some sleep.”
“I’ll walk you up,” Severus volunteered, calling that Albus wanted her guarded at all times.
Lialani simply nodded and started to make her way up the stairs wearily.
Severus watched her for a minute, but then turned back to Albus and Hermione, who were also facing away from the stairs. This was a mistake. A shrill shriek ripped through the air and reverberated through their minds. They looked up to see Draco Malfoy grab Lialani around the waist and put his wand to her temple.
“Nobody move or I’ll cast the killing curse,” he yelled down the stairs. “She escaped once but she won’t this time.”
“You won’t kill her, Draco,” Albus said calmly. “Voldemort needs her.”
“Even so, I can cast more charms that might further her amnesia,” Draco responded threateningly. “Or give it to her permanently.”
“No, you know you can’t. Voldemort also needs her powers. If you make her amnesia permanent, she will never get them back.”
“Fine!” Draco was getting irritated.
“Leave me alone!” Lialani yelled, squirming under the iron grip he had on her waist.
“Tut, tut, be quiet, little one,” he warned, using the name that Voldemort had given her.
“I’m not little!” she shouted and closed her eyes.
She rose into the air, simply slipping out of Draco’s hold. He gaped at her, shocked, but was distracted when he found himself blasted off his feet and down the stairs. Lialani remained in the air but her eyes opened. Severus saw a glimmer of panic pass through before they closed again and she fell to the floor. He immediately raced up the stairs to her. When he reached her, she was already sitting up, looking around with eyes wide and filled with fear.
“What happened? Why did my mind just blank out like that?” she cried, panicking.
“Your powers kicked in because you were scared,” Severus replied.
Lialani’s eyes closed again. At first, Severus though she was composing herself, but when he felt her slip away, he knew her powers had gone off again. She flew backwards, still sitting on the floor, and stopped about thirty feet away from Severus. He stood up and was surprised to find himself hovering slightly in the air, moving down the stairs. Suddenly, he heard screaming in his head. He, too, fell to the floor, writhing as he gripped his head. Then, just as abrupt as they started, the screams ended. He sat up, startled, and started up towards Lialani. She was lying on the floor, knees drawn to her chest.
“Are you alright?” he asked tentatively.
There was no answer, not even a nod or shakeher her head.
“Hermione, her powers are reacting to the fear she feels when her powers go off. Go get a Calming Draught from Madam Pomfrey,” Albus ordered.
“Yes, Professor,’ Hermione replied.
She started up the stairs. When she reached the top, she looked around, feeling very awkward. Severus sensed this and turned to her.
“Don’t worry about her powers. Just walk around her. But try not to make any noise,” he said.
Hermione nodded and reluctantly inched her way around Lialani, not even daring to breathe for fear of making too much noise. Much to her dismay, Lialani’s powers were still sensitive and she heard her anyway. Hermione found herself floating ten feet in the air and away from the Lialani. But luckily, it was on the way she needed to go anyway.
\"Ugh, if this is gonna happen every time she gets upset then I\'m glad I\'m not the one who\'s marrying her,\" she muttered.
Severus heard her. \"Watch your tone, Miss Granger. I don\'t tolerate it with Miss Turowsky and I will not tolerate it with you.\"
\"Yes, Professor Snape,\" Hermione mumbled and headed down the hallway.
\"Severus, what is she doing?\" Albus called up the stairs.
\"She\'s curled into a ball on the floor and when Hermione went around her, Lialani made her float in the air and away from her,\" Severus replied.
\"She obviously doesn\'t want anyone near her at the moment. Hermione is going to get a Calming Draught from Poppy.\"
\"Good idea, Albus.\"
\"We just have to think of a way to get Lialani to drink it.\"
\"I have an idea. If she can talk in my mind, then I should be able to talk in hers. If I concentrate, maybe I can tell her to drink the potion.\"
\"It\'s worth a try. When Hermione gets back take the potion from her.\"
Hermione returned ten minutes later, clutching a small vial to her chest. Severus held out his hand to take it and she gave it to him.
Lialani opened her eyes and looked around. She couldn\'t see anyone\'s lips moving so why did she hear a voice? She listened closely to it, though, and reached for the vial as it told her to. Two minutes later, she stood up and stretched, her emotions in check from the Calming Draught. She felt much better and she said as much.
\"I feel a lot better. What was that thing I just drank?\" she asked.
\"A Calming Draught. Albus figured that it would calm you down enough to stop your powers,\" Severus replied.
\"Speaking of my powers, why did they go off?\"
\"You were scared. They went off when Malfoy had you because of anger, but when they off that first time, they scared you and therefore they went off again. Your subconscious was telling you that you wanted everyone to leave you alone so your powers kept pushing everyone away.\"
\"Right. Why did I hear a voice when no one\'s mouth was moving?\"
\"You and I are mentally, physically, and spiritually connected. I spoke in your mind because if I concentrate enough I can get into your mind and therefore I can talk in it. How we are connected we have yet to discover.\"
\"So if I was to get hurt you would feel it too?\"
\"Yes, and if I get hurt you feel it with me.\"
\"Well, that blows. I don\'t want to feel pain that isn\'t even mine,\" Lialani complained. \"Can we stop it?\"
Severus shook his head grimly. \"There is no way to break the connection. However, I am very accomplished at Occlumency and I can lock my mind from the connection.\"
\"If you do that, then I won\'t be able to feel your pain and stuff like that?\"
\"Precisely.\" Severus chose not to tell her that he would be unlocking his mind at times when he knew that she should not be using any of her powers.
\"Sounds good to me.\"
\"I\'m glad you like it, but we must handle Mr. Malfoy at this moment,\" Albus interrupted, gesturing to the still form lying at the bottom of the stairs.
Lialani blanched. \"I\'m not in trouble for that, am I?\"
\"No. You did not intentionally do it to him so you cannot get into trouble for it,\" Albus answered.
Harry and Ron chose that moment to appear in a doorway to Lialani\'s left. They looked from Lialani to the limp body of Draco at the bottom of the stairs and gasped.
\"Lialani, you do that?\" Ron asked, nodding at Draco.
She nodded and Harry laughed. He quickly stuffed his fist in his mouth but Lialani could still hear the stifled chuckles.
\"Potter, I see nothing funny about this,\" Severus snapped and instantly Harry\'s face became blank.
\"What happened?\" Ron questioned, wondering what Malfoy had to do with whatever it was.
Lialani immediately launched into the story, but was helped along by Hermione when it came to the part of her powers taking action. Harry again had to keep his fist in his mouth to stop the guffaws while Ron pumped his fist into the air and said, \"Alright, Lialani!\" She blushed fiercely. Hermione giggled at this and Severus shook his head.
\"Weasley, I don\'t think you should be so happy at another student\'s misfortunes,\" he said. \"Potter, I can still hear you laughing!\"
Both Harry and Ron simply looked at him for a minute, as though contemplating wer ter to say something back but apparently deciding against it as they turned back to Lialani.
\"Are you okay?\" Harry asked worriedly.
\"Yeah. I took a Calming Draught and now, obviously, I\'m calm,\" she replied. \"But I\'m going to the infirmary to take the nap that I\'ve been wanting to take since we got back.\"
\"I\'m coming wiou,\ou,\" Severus said immediately. He took her arm and led her away.
\"Got back from where?\" Ron looked to Hermione, confusion etched across his freckled face.
\"I\'ll tell you on the way to the common room,\" Hermione responded and they left.
Albus, now completely alone, looked down at Draco and sighed. Now he had to revive the poor boy. He took out his wand and placed it at Draco\'s temple. After he muttered a spell, Draco sat up and looked around.
\"Where is she?\" he hissed, not knowing that Albus was kneeling right beside him.
\"I believe she is heading to the infirmary with Professor Snape to take a nap,\" Albus replied lightly.
Draco looked at him, surprised.
\"You are in a lot of trouble, young man,\" Albus said sternly and pulled him to his feet. \"Come with me.\"
Draco scowled but followed him to his office. At the same time, Lialani and Severus were walking to the hospital wing. She walked slowly, her mind working groggily as the recent events settled on her. Severus didn\'t talk, knowing that she was exhausted and probably couldn\'t manage a conversa at at the moment. When they reached the newly fixed door of the hospital wing, she turned to him.
\"Thank you for walking me here, Professor,\" she said tiredly.
\"You\'re welcome,\" he replied. \"Have a good nap,\" he murmured softly. He turned and briskly strode away.
She looked after him for a minute, and then turned to the door. She fumbled with the doorknob until Poppy opened it for her. Poppy looked questioningly at her but Lialani simply stumbled past and into her recently made bed. In a minute, she was sleeping soundly.
\'I must ask Albus why she gets tired so quickly,\' she thought and went into her office.
She was only in there for a minute when a shout brought her out. Ron was helping along a limping Harry and Hermione followed, wringing her hands.
\"Madam Pomfrey, someone pushed him down a flight of stairs and when he reached the bottom another person pushed him down another flight,\" Ron explained angrily. \"Just wait until I found who did it!\"
\"Ron, don\'t start,\" Hermione said pleadingly. \"We don\'t need you hurt too.\"
Ron quieted, not liking the sad look on Hermione\'s face. He knew that Hermione liked Harry, he had known for a year now. Harry was apparently oblivious. The only thing that stopped Ron from telling Harry that Hermione liked him was Hermione. She had begged and pleaded for nearly a half hour before Ron gave in and promised not to tell. Now, he regretted that promise. Harry was asking him everyday now why Hermione had taken the rumors of the baby being his so badly and he could not tell. Ron turned to Hermione.
\"You know, you should really tell him that you like him,\" Ron muttered quietly.
Hermione looked horrified at the suggestion. \"I could never do that!\"
\"Why not?\" a surprised Harry asked. He had caught their little conversation.
Hermione turned and fled from the room.
\"Why\'d she do that?\" Harry looked to Ron, shocked.
\"I have no idea, mate,\" he replied.
\"Ron, how long has she liked me?\"
\"I dunno.\" Ron shrugged.
\"Don\'t lie-OW!\" Poppy prodded his ankle rather roughly.
\"Why do more and more people break their ankles at the end of the year?\" she mused.
\"Because it is nicer out and more and more people spend their time fooling around outside,\" Ron replied.
\"Do not be smart, Mr.sleysley,\" Poppy snapped.
“I can’t help it,” he sniggered. “a ria right genius.”
“Mr. Weasley,” Poppy warned.
“Ron, shut up!” Harry exclaimed, wincing as Poppy poked his ankle again.
“Well, there’s no doubt about it. You’ve broken your ankle, Mr. Potter,” Poppy sighed and reached for her bag. “Not only is it broken, but broken and fractured in three places. I would feel safer if it wasn’t healed by magic but if it was set and healed on it’s own.”
Harry growled in frustration. “Whoever pushed me down those stairs better hope that I never find them!”
“You won’t be looking for a good week because I don’t want you on your feet until I’m sure that the setting is working,” Poppy explained.
Harry moaned. “Why does everything happen to me?”
“Believe me, not everything happens to you,” said a voice from the bed on his left.
Harry glanced over and saw the tired face of Lialani peering out of her curtains.
“I should probably be thankful that I don’t have amnesia, huh?” Harry asked.
She nodded. “Although according to everyone I’m getting my memory back faster than most people with amnesia do.”
“That’s good.”
“Yeah, I just wish it would come faster. I hate trying to remember something but only getting a blank space in my head!”
“Well, then everyone should try harder to get your memory back!” Poppy said, looking meaningfully at Ron and Harry.
“My family could help, you know. You shouldn’t be relying on only people at school,” Lialani complained.
“You hanly nly until Saturday to get as much of your memory back as you can so excuse me if I’m putting a little pressure on people you know and spend huge amounts of time with.”
“Then why aren’t you asking Professor Snape and Professor McGonagall and Professor Dumbledore?”
“What do they have to do with anything?”
“I’m always in trouble so Professor Dumbledore sees me a lot. Professor McGonagall and Professor Snape were the two who were with me the most over the summers I was tested and the summer when I worked for the Order!”
“Who told her that?” Poppy asked excitedly, looking from the surprised young wizards to the angry witch.
“Neither of us,” Harry replied, gesturing to himself and Ron.
“No one did, I just happened to remember it on my own!” Lialani snapped, but a pleased expression settled on her features. “Ha! I remembered something on my own!”
“Professor Snape wieed eed to know,” Poppy said absently.
“Why?” wondered Ron.
“He has requested that he be informed whenever she remembers something,” Poppy answered and summoned a house-elf.
Dobby appeared, bowing low. He straightened and spotted Harry.
“Oh, Harry Potter, sir! How are you, sir?” Dobby asked.
“I’m good. How’re you?”
“Dobby is doing well, sir. He is working very hard in the kitchens.”
“That’s good. But Madam Pomfrey needs you now.”
“Thank you, Mr. Potter. Dobby, I need you to tell Professor Snape that Miss Turowsky has remembered something. Can you remember that?” Poppy asked.
“Miss Turowsky, miss? Well, that be Lialani.”
“Hello, Dobby!” Lialani cried happily and thrust open her curtains.
“Lialani!” he squealed delightedly and jumped on her bed.
She gathered him into a hug.
“Lialani, how do you know Dobby?” Harry asked, bewildered.
“I used to sneak down to the kitchens when I couldn’t sleep,” she replied. A happy smile lit up her face. “Another thing I remembered!”
“Dobby, I need you to give that message to Professor Snape,” Poppy said impatiently.
“Yes, miss. Perhaps Dobby will see Lialani later?” he asked hopefully.
“Perhaps,” she replied and reluctantly let go of him.
“Go, Dobby,” Poppy commanded.
“Yes, miss.” Dobby bowed low and with a crack, he disappeared.
“Really, Miss Turowsky, sneaking into the kitchens,” Poppy reprimanded as she bustled around getting the supplies she needed to set Harry’s ankle.
“There’s no use yelling at me now,” Lialani pointed out.
“Even so…” Poppy didn’t continue, leaving the end hanging in the air like an unspoken threat.
“Lialani, where did you go today? Hermione didn’t get the chance to tell us,” Ron said and perched on the end of her bed.
“St. Mungo’s,” she replied, unconsciously rubbing her shoulder.
“What for?”
“Professor Snape wanted official documentation of my injuries.”
“Why? Isn’t Madam Pomfrey’s good enough?”
“That’s what I said!” Poppy retorted, looking up from Harry’s ankle.
“But he wanted a doctor’s signature on all the medical documents. Not to mention we waited for an hour just so I could see the doctor he’s seen for thirty years.”
“Only the best for his precious Lialani,” Harry smirked and promptly received a pillow full in the face.
“Mr. Potter! I don’t want to hear that again!” Poppy scolded.
“Yes, Madam Pomfrey,” Harry responded, grinning.
“Anyway, back to what I was saying. How’d Malfoy get involved?” Ron inquired.
“Grabbed me and threatened to kill me.”
“But doesn’t You-Know-Who-”
“For heaven’s sake, Ron, just say ‘Voldemort’!” Harry exclaimed. Poppy and Ron flinched. Lialani didn’t even bat an eyelash.
“Yeah, he does. Luckily, my powers kicked in and I got away.”
“Why do you have to get as much of your memory back by Saturday?”
“Because I’m going to see my parents to tell them everything.”
“That means-” Ron broke off and pointed to the ring that was sparkling on her left ring finger.
“Yup, even that.”
“How’re they gonna take it?”
“I have no idea. My mum has a panic-attack every time I fall off my bike, I dunno what she’s gonna do when she finds out that I’m getting married to my Potions’ professor.”
“We’ll just have to wait until Saturday, Miss Turowsky,” Severus said as he strode to her bedside.
“Wait, what’s a bike?” Ron looked confused.
“It’s a toy that kids in the Muggle world use, Ron,” Harry answered for Lialani.
“Oh. But don’t you live in the wizarding world?” Ron asked Lialani.
“Yeah. But we visit the Muggle world sometimes,” Lialani replied.
She looked a little nervous so on an impulse, he grabbed her hand and squeezed it slightly and she smiled softly. At a raised eyebrow from Harry, Lialani simply snapped the curtain shut, enclosing her and Severus inside. Harry snorted with suppressed laughter as Ron inched up to the curtain. Instantly, the curtain flew open and Ron was confronted with a laughing Lialani and a not-so-pleased Severus. Lialani shook her finger at him, her entire body shaking with mirth.
“Tut, tut, everyone seems to forget that my senses are fifty times more powerful than theirs!” she chortled.
“Eavesdropping, Weasley?” Severus asked silkily. “Ten points from Gryffindor for an invasion of privacy.”
Ron moaned and sat down next to Harry.
“Thought that would happen, mate,” Harry snickered.
“So why didn’t you say anything?” Ron asked angrily.
“I wanted to see you find out for yourself.”
“Real nice, Harry!” Ron jumped off the bed and headed for the door.
Harry looked after him, bewildered at his reaction. Ron didn’t usually act like this at a simple joke. Just as the door closed behind him, it opened again and a pale-faced Minerva burst in.
