Synopsis: This story takes place after my previous story “The Lion and The Serpent”. In this story Harry and Draco are on their way back to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry when they are ambushed by Death Eaters, leaving Draco half dead. So distraught over Draco’s possible death Harry wishes he was never born . . . but will his wish actually come true?

His heart pounded in his chest like a jack hammer as he raced across the corridor with his future self right beside him, already back in his mask.

SLAM!!! The door to Draco’s room went as Harry kicked it open.

“EXPELLIEARMSUS!!!” Harry yelled with suck force that the Death Eater was sent flying against the far wall, just as the Death Eater had pulled out his wand over Draco.

Harry quickly went over to Draco’s side to see if he was alright as the Phoenix moved over to secure the Death eater. With a quick swish and flick of his wand the unconscious Death Eater was trapped in a binding charm, the same one Dumbledore used on Luscious Malfoy and the other last year in the department of mysteries to keep them from apparating away. Harry was beside himself, only vaguely aware of his surroundings as he looked Draco over. He was still alive as before, since the Death Eater hadn’t been given the chance to complete his mission, but if Draco did not awaken soon, he never would.

“How can I save him . . . How can I bring him back?” Harry implored as a tear began to streak down his face.

“I can’t tell you how Harry, if I do, you won’t be able to save him. Just listen to your heart, it already knows what to do” replied the Phoenix.

Somehow, Harry understood. He looked back down to Draco’s face as more tears began to flow from his eyes. Not know what to do Harry placed his left hand over Draco’s heart and bent low to Draco’s ear and began to speak softly:

“I don’t know what I can say or do to make this all come out alright. Everyone always sees me as some kind tragic hero, and I do the things I do because I feel that I am because I have to be. The only time I have ever felt otherwise was when I was with you. You never saw me for more than what I truly am, with that Slytherrin wit and cunning of yours. You always saw right through me, and made me feel . . . like I could do anything. So you can’t die on me now, because I need you . . . and. . . . I love you”

At those very last words, Harry placed his lips upon Draco’s. Then, suddenly, Harry was over come by a strange sensation. He broke his lips away from his lover, and saw a strange warm silvery glow emitting from his left hand. It felt powerful, and soothing all at once as it began to flow all throughout his body. But, just as suddenly as it came, it disappeared, leaving Harry confused. Just before Harry could speak, Draco gave a large grunt and opened his eyes.

“Harry . . .” Draco whispered as he looked around at his surroundings.

Harry embraced his lover in a Hagrid like hug as he pondered how he had done it.

“Love . . . that’s how” said the Phoenix, as he looked at his own hands with a similar look in his eyes that Harry had a moment before. “Love was he key to unlocking your power to heal. You couldn’t use it before, because off all the negative things inside you kept the power buried.”

“Who are you?” Draco asked, as Harry pulled away and looked upon the masked stranger.

For a moment no one spoke as the question hung in the air. Draco looked at both of them in turn in his confusion, but gained no answer from either. Before anyone had a chance to say something else, the opening of the hospital room door opened, ending the awkward silence, and signaling the arrival of Dumbledore himself, with Fawkes on his shoulder.

“I take it, you’re the mysterious man I have heard rumors of lately” Dumbledore declared as he looked upon the Phoenix.

The Phoenix only smiled and nodded in response. Fawkes then flew over to the Phoenix and perched himself happily onto his shoulders, and began to rub his head like a cat unto masked stranger in great affection.

“The fact my phoenix seems to feel an affinity towards you bodes well for you” Dumbledore responded.

“I’ve missed you too Fawkes. I assure you Albus, everything will be explained to you later but for now I assure you I have no ill will towards you or Harry, so you may put your wand away.”

Harry then looked at Dumbledore’s hands and saw that he was indeed ready to strike given the need. Trust Dumbledore to be ready for anything. . . .

“Harry, my time here grows short, but there is one last thing I must do now that I have this chance. Meet me on the roof in five minutes, alone” he declared, speaking the last word mostly to Dumbledore, instead of Harry.

Dumbledore was reluctant to let him pass but with a glace from Harry he knew it was alright.

“What’s going on?” Draco asked, more annoyed now with his confusion.

“I’m afraid I must ask the same of you Mr. Potter. As well as many other questions” Dumbledore declared.

“I know you both have questions, and I will give you answers but for now you must trust me and wait a little longer to get them” Harry answered.

“Harry, I’m afraid that is not enough. Since the beginning of the summer, I have heard rumors of that man attacking key figures in Voldemort’s fold, leaving them all dead, and I need to know his intentions immediately.”

“Professor, I can assure you he is on our side, after today . . . The only assurance I can give you at this moment is that he helped me save Draco’s life” Harry responded.

Remembering that he had to go to the roof, Harry asked Dumbledore to stay with Draco as he went to the roof. Not giving Dumbledore the chance to declare otherwise, Harry quickly exited the room to meet his future self. Sure enough, the Phoenix was there waiting, leaning against the ledge of the roof.

“So what happens now?” Harry asked, fearing the answer.

“I have accomplished what I set out to do, and now the spirits will come to claim me and erase my existence.”

“No! Stay here, with us . . . you can be big help to the Order and . . .

“No, Harry . . .” the Phoenix interrupted. “No matter how much I may want to, I can’t stay. If I do, everything I have done will be for nothing.”

‘But, there is still a lot I don’t understand. If you only just got here, then why did Dumbledore say he’s heard rumors of you since the beginning of the summer? What’s going to happen in the future now if Draco is alive? How can I . . .”

“Harry,” the Phoenix once again interrupted. “I have been here since the beginning of this summer. I tried to change everything without ever let you or anyone else about me, but every time I tried to change what happened, as soon as I tried to leave nothing I changed stayed stable. It took everything I have to remain here as long as I have. So I decided that the only way for me to solve anything was to let you save yourself. As for what will happen now, only you can say. The future is not written yet, and whatever future you make is the one you will create.”

“I understand . . .” Harry responded.

“Before I go, I want to give you something,” the Phoenix said as he reached for Harry’s hand.

Harry gave his future self his hand, and the Phoenix placed on his armor. Instantly the armor transferred itself onto Harry’s chest along with duplicates of the Phoenix’s dragon hide boots and pants.

“This armor has many magical properties, and only the wearer can know them all. To take the armor off, you just have to think it and it will disappear leaving only the phoenix symbol on your forearm which is invisible to everyone but yourself. Given time you will learn to master its power as well as your own. You have many more abilities to unlock, and many more things to learn.”

Absorbing all this information while looking into his own eyes, Harry felt overwhelmed. All the things he waned to say, everything he felt, he could only convey with the look in his eyes. In response, the Phoenix leaned in closer, and pressed his lips against Harry. It was different from kissing Draco, but a kiss none the less. It was brief but powerful, as all the sorrow and anger flowed from one to the other, as well the joy and love each had recently discovered. When it was over, neither spoke as there was nothing left to say. The future Harry then stepped back a step and stretched his arms outwards like wings. The cry of a phoenix erupted out of Harry’s wand and in that moment, his future self exploded in a ball of flame. The flame was only slightly warm, amazingly, and then for a second it took the shape of a giant bird just before it extinguished, leaving no trace that there was ever anything there. . .
