Chapter Fourteen – The Gala

On the night of the gala, Lucius and Olivia dressed together in their bedroom. Once Olivia stepped into her dress, Lucius was affected like Pavlov’s dog at the sight of the color on her and wanted her out of it and on the bed. He sighed and finished his own attire, adjusting his trousers over his reaction to her.

Olivia looked over at Lucius staring at her. She hid a smile, feeling his lust like a fire in her chest. He was the one who looked magnificent, she thought. She never tired of looking into those mesmerizing pale gray eyes of his, and often had the same reaction to him that he had to her tonight. She sighed, smitten. Lucius in evening dress was breathtaking. He wore a black tuxedo with a snow-white high collared shirt with a white bow tie wrapped around his throat. He completed his ensemble with a low-cut waistcoat in black brocade that displayed his broad chest and narrow waist. Olivia instantly wanted him out of it and on the bed. She groaned inwardly, if I have to sit down anywhere, I hope my reaction to him won’t soak through this dress. It was really unfair that he made her so crazy. The fire in her chest leapt higher from her own desire.

Lucius wrapped her in a cloak, pulled on his cape, picked up his cane and whisked them to the Ministry of Magic’s smaller ballroom, being used as a social gathering. The crowd there was a glittering throng with most of them making a substantial space around Lucius and Olivia. Lucius flicked their wraps away and led her over to the Minister and his wife who murmured greetings. Olivia was happy to see two people she recognized, but she and Lucius soon had to move on for the next couple to be greeted. Olivia clung to Lucius as he traversed the perimeter of the ballroom in a slow walk. She smiled at others and got a few smiles in return. Finally, Lucius stopped before an older couple in long robes. She could feel his tension. “Albus, Minerva, may I present my wife, Olivia Malfoy. My dear, this is Albus Dumbledore, Head of Hogwarts, and Minerva McGonagall, Deputy Head and Professor of Transfigurations.”

Olivia held out her hand and shook both of theirs. “I am very happy to meet both of you. I know Lucius sets great store by his alma mater. I would like to visit sometime to see it. It sounds beautiful and fascinating. Where I’m from none of our buildings are so steeped in tradition.”

“Well,” Dumbledore twinkled, “if you mean none of them are as ancient and drafty as Hogwarts you’d probably be right. But it is beautiful. And it can be fascinating.” He looked sideways briefly at Lucius. “You are welcome to visit anytime. Send me an owl and we’ll arrange it. With Lucius’ agreement, of course.” He smiled at Olivia who beamed at them both.

“I’d love that. Thank you. And Professor McGonagall, I think Transfigurations was my favorite course of all. I was home-schooled so I practiced around the house with my mother trailing behind me fixing my disasters. It wasn’t my best subject you see, but it was my favorite.”

Lucius murmured about circulating some more, so Olivia said her goodbyes and they continued walking the perimeter. After they left, Minerva turned to Albus and said, “How did Lucius manage to find such a lovely girl? And did Lucius actually seem smitten with her? His face changed whenever he looked at her. Unusual for him to give anything away. Does she know what she has married into, I wonder?”

“Oh, I think he has a tiger by the tail and doesn’t know it.” Dumbledore replied. “She’s empathic, you see. I could feel it from her when she shook my hand. She wasn’t trying to hide it at all, but Lucius wouldn’t recognize it. He tries to control himself so much he’s more unaware of emotions than most. He’s going to have an interesting marriage with her.” Albus smiled, “I agree she’s a lovely girl and I think Lucius is going to be more lucky than he knows in his choice. But I hope she isn’t endangered by his activities. It’s a distinct possibility, unfortunately.”

Olivia kept pace with a tense Lucius, nodding to people and being introduced to a few. After two more strolls around the perimeter, Lucius took them into the main ballroom where there was dancing. “Do you waltz?” Without waiting for her answer, Lucius swept her onto the floor and into the circling couples.

Olivia loved to dance but almost never got a chance. She was pretty rusty and stumbled a few times, but Lucius held her up. She felt Lucius’ mood lighten as he danced and she was glad his tension had abated some. They danced several dances, mostly waltzes, which they both preferred. Olivia saw a buffet table and asked for something to drink, so they selected drinks and some food and found a small table on the nearby veranda. Lucius returned their cloaks to them and they ate outside with a few other couples.

Lucius said, “Do you want to stay and dance some more? Or would you rather go home?” Olivia could feel the tension seeping back into Lucius so she opted for home. If she was lucky the evening wasn’t going to end for them just yet. It must have been the correct answer because Lucius’ cane appeared in his hand, and suddenly they were home again, in their bedroom.

No, Olivia grinned to herself, the evening wasn’t going to end yet. She was absolutely right. And Lucius really looked even better naked than in his tux.
