“Are you all right?” Juan asked as he adjusted her bag on his shoulder as they walked into their apartment building a week later.
“Yeah,” she said looking into his face. “I . . . have a lot of things on my mind.”
She smiled weakly as they entered the lift. Juan looked at her earnestly. He rubbed her shoulder as the lift rose.
They walked to her apartment. Juan closed the door behind him. He took a seat on her couch as Hermione entered the kitchen. She poured them both a glass of cranberry juice.
She handed him the glass as she took a seat next to him. She turned on the television and watched blankly.
“Come on, Hermione,” he said turning his head to face her.
“I’m pregnant,” she sobbed.
Juan inched away, a little taken aback. “Okay,” he said a little sheepishly. “It wasn’t me was it?”
Hermione let out a laugh. The comic relief was much needed. She kissed him on the cheek.
“How far along are you?”
“Thirteen weeks,” she said looking down at her hands.
Juan made some simple calculations in his head. He knew it could not have been her husband’s child. He just smiled at her; she would tell him eventually who the father was.
“Todo estará bien, Hermione,” Juan said
“It’s not Ron’s,” she looked at him, knowing he already knew.
Hermione had told him about Ron. She had said he had died in a work related accident in March. He wondered if that was why she had left England. Or had the father of her child been abusive? She kept some things to herself.
He pulled her into a hug. He rubbed her shoulders as her tears finally subsided. He looked down at her with a reassuring look. She just nodded and stayed in his embrace for a while. Hermione was glad that he did not push for answers. She felt safe in his arms. She was lucky to have him as a friend.
