Ch 12. Costume And Details
It was the day of the gala and the Black Pearl was docking; only now she was called The Serpentine. It seemed fitting, as the Captain was a descendant of Salazar Slytherin. She was still black, but she was shining in the sun. They had spelled the sails a deep emerald green, and the flag was in grey silk with the Slytherin crest embodied, curtsey of Bella. She did not even know how many times she had doodled that crest in her books. She knew every detail off by heart.
Their dressings had not been hard to find, as Barbossa had, in short, collected nice clothes. Bella had given them a more modern cut and removed some of the lace- it was really tacky- and changed the colours a bit- she didn’t look good in pink and yellow, neither did Jack. She was now thankful for all the hours her mother made her spend at Madame Malkin’s to pick out fabrics and cuts. Her knowledge came in really handy.
Jack had not been hard to remind of his childhood way of life, as he had never forgotten them. Jack had spent years honing his persona as Sparrow- the care-free, drunk libertine who was just a bit crazy. His efforts to make people underestimate him had grown into his habits.
They had spent hours upon hours upon deck to somehow shake the bounce out of Jack’s swagger steps. The man was dynamite; always ready at a milliseconds notice. He was too energetic, and it showed, but it had paid off and now what they stepped up on the helm and stared at the view of Port Royal, it was not Jack Sparrow, the man he had made up and showed to the world, but, Jackson Teague, the man he was born as. But seriously, all Bella had really done was to throw the rum over board.
Jack’s energy had found another outlet, as his walk now had a calm authority about it. His eyes were burning from the wild magic in him and his every move was crackling with power. The crew’s respect had grown even more as they saw their Captain’s true strength. It had never occurred to them that maybe their Captain was hiding anything or holding back; he always seemed to flaunt his abilities.
Jack had found that he really enjoyed his playful side much more what he didn’t have to force it to be present all the time. He had forgotten how bloody good it felt to brood once in a while, especially when he had the girl he loved using his as a pillow. It had surprised him that they had been able to sleep in the same bed for so long, with Bella only wearing one of his linen shirts and nothing else, but they had still not had sex. Naturally a bit of playing had occurred, but they had never gone all the way. He wanted her to be completely his before they went down that road.
These were the thoughts that were soaring through the mind of the lord, turned pirate, turned lord- and hopefully back to pirate. His dark eyes were shooting nervous glances at the beauty beside him, not that she noticed. She was wearing a deep green silk dress with back velvet lace; it was a gown worthy of a queen. But then again, she was a queen, a pirate queen. Her outfit matched his black suit with silver lining.
They were quite the pair. Bella’s inky locks had been braided with silver chains, while his long wavy sun bleached mane had been tamed and tied in a black velvet band.
Bella was stealing glances at the man she loved. He was standing with his hands caressing the newly painted wheel and his head held high. The wind was pulling gently at a few locks that had lost their way, but it was so sexy she could not bring herself to fix it. The pink sunset made his tanned skin glow. The look on his face as he stared at the horizon made her realise that he would always be part pirate, a rebel that sought for freedom above anything else, but she would be lying if she said she ever wanted him to change.
Before she could stop herself her hand had reached up and caressed his cheek and soft lips. He caught her finger between his teeth and smirked down at her. He no longer had a long beard, but she had demanded that he would not be clean-shaven, so now he had a sexy scruffy chin that looked adorable and just a bit dangerous. It felt so good when he kissed her.
“See something you like, love?”
“How could I not? You’re here.” She grinned back at him then she grew serious. “Are you nervous?”
“No.” he answered simply. “But I’m not entirely calm either.” He admitted after a few uneasy breaths. “I haven’t seen him in nearly twenty years, and now I drop by to rob him. He does deserve it though. He was a shit father.”
“I know love.” She said and snuck under his arm. He obeyed the gesture and laid his arm around her shoulders and pulled her closer. The crew had packed the sails and the Pearl was gently gliding into the harbour.
Jack was staring intently on his left hand, or rather the Celtic engagement ring on his left hand. His mother had given them to him, to wear when the right woman came along, and now she was here. Bella wore the other ring, but it was just for show. He didn’t want it to be for show.
Possessiveness welled in him when he thought of all the other men she would dance with that night. Sure, she was his ‘girlfriend’, but ‘girlfriend’ was not set in stone. ‘Girlfriend’ allowed others to paw her, so to speak. In the Pirate world, she was as good as his wife already, but he wanted it to be carved on their head stones and to be black on white legal papers stuffed away in a drawer in a dusty office back home in Britain- One hundred per cent his.
He took gently hold of Bella’s hand and kissed the soft palm.
“Bella…”
“Hm?” came the satisfied response. Oh how she adored being cocooned in his arms. The heat radiating from him was enough to keep her warm in the cool breeze that was filling the emerald sails. She smiled as she felt a strong arm wrap itself securely around her waist and another hold her hand as it was gently kissed once more by his hot lips.
“Will you marry me?”
Bellatrix’s world stooped into slow motion. Every sound was erased by her heartbeat; thundering in her head. Thoughts and images raced through her mind. The world came back into proportion when she felt Jack pull away.
Jack let go of her and pulled away. Her reaction was not to be mistaken. His heart had been doing 180 a minute until she grew cold in his arms, now he struggled for it to pump the blood in his veins at all.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered in a broken voice and turned to leave.
