A week of normalcy went by as if Severus was once again only Alex’s teacher, and she and her friends didn’t have a care in the world. Classes were boring as usual. Friday finally came around. It was Halloween. October 31st; All Hallows Eve. The Masquerade Ball was tonight and the school buzzed from excitement and chit chat of what the night might bring. It was a warm, sunny, crisp autumn day; probably the last for the year. Alex, Sasha, and Kevin decided to take advantage of it and headed out to the lake like many of their peers, to catch a few rays of sun. Alex and Kevin spread a blanket out under a tree while Sasha ran to get pumpkin juice and snacks.
“So Kev, what are you going to be for the Masquerade tonight?”ex aex asked.
“I’m not telling.”
“Why not?! How will I know who to look for?”
“Oh you’ll know. Maybe someone will come and seduce you into the gardens tonight.”
“Yeah, ok, and that someone will be you?”
“Maybe…”
“Oh come on, just tell me what you’re going to dress up like.”
“Wouldn’t you like tow.” w.” Kevin smiled with mischief gleaming in his eyes. “You’ll just have to wait and see, maybe you’ll be able to figure it out!”
“Well in that case, we won’t tell you what we’re going to be either!” Sasha giggled and she approached them.
Kevin shrugged. “All is fair in love and war.” He exaggeratingly declared.
Sasha pulled out their books. “So what about this Arithmancy homework?”
The afternoon progressed and pretty soon it was time to head in and get ready for the ball.
********************************
The Great Hall was full of excited whispers upon entering it. The ceiling was pitch black except for a few twinkling stars and a full moon, which was almost always half covered by a passing cloud. Bats swooped through the great hall and Jack-o-Lanterns smiled down on them with glowing faces. Black candles huddled in groups scattered around. The usual tables were not there, and in their places were lots of smaller tables scattered around the great hall with six chairs, leaving a big enough space in the middle for a dance floor. Students and teachers had to sit together. McGonagle and Dumbledore were sitting with a couple of seventh years; Sprout was sitting with Neville and his friends; and the rest of the teachers seemed interspersed throughout the crowd, if you could recognize them. An eerie music was playing from seemingly nowhere, and its tune seemed to beckon an almost scary quiet from people in the hall.
Alex and Sasha walked in with awe. It was going to be a fun night! Alex wore a Black flowing dress that accentuated her curves with long swooping sleeves. Over it she wore a black corset with blood red laces. Her normally straight hair was done up in curls piled on top of her head. Over her eyes she wore a black metal mask with red jewels adorning it. Her lips were blood red and she had charmed her teeth so that her canines were longer. Sasha wore a cream and gold colored gown with a low scoop neck and sheer glittery wings attached to it’s back. Her hair was down and curled at the bottom. Her mask was a cream colored material with gold sequins creating beautiful patterns, accentuating her deep brown eyes. Her lips were a glossy pink and her skin was charmed to be pale, completing the angelic look. They picked out a table and sat down.
“I like your vamp look, Alex.”
“Ah yes, and I like your costume. We are quite the pair: the demon and the angel. How ironic.”
Sasha giggled. Pretty soon they were joined by a black cat with yellow eyes, a blue pixie who sparkled almost too brightly, a phantom who didn’t seem to have a face at all and his hands were covered by black gloves, and a dead Quidditch player with a bludger stuck in the side of his head
As soonthe the tables were full, food appeared on their plates and everyone began eating. Each plate seemed to match the person’s costume in some way. Alex was eating a very rare steak with mashed potatoes and asparagus. Sasha was eating a green salad and garlic bread. The cat was eating a salmon dish. The pixie was eating a mix of things that didn’t look quite appetizing, but she seemed she was enjoying it anyways. The phantom was eating Chicken Parmesan, although no one could see where the food was ending up once it reached its hood. And the Quidditch player was eating meat loaf and mashed potatoes with a red gravy. Everyone was talking and making conversation, except the phantom, no one could get a word out of him, and no one knew who he was.
As soon as everyone finished eating, the plates were suddenly clean and a band appeared in a corner of the room. They started playing music and one by one, students gathered on the dance floor. Alex and Sasha joined the crowd and danced and danced for hours to up-beat fast music. Sometime during the dancing, some one came up from behind Alex and started dancing with her. He grinded with her to the music, molding his body to hers. Terribly curious and aroused, Alex turned to see who it was. He was tall and thin and pale. Unfortunately, that’s all she could make out because his costume covered all his features. His costume was black leather, exaggerating every muscle in his body, a long black cloak swept around him, half concealing him. A black mask covered his face and hair. Instead of holes for eyes, were red jewels shaped as slits.
“Who are you?” She asked.
He leaned close, his lips brushing her ear. “Mystery.” Was the only word he whispered to her, not even a hint of a voice.
They continued to dance, and she still had no idea who he was. He pulled her closer, letting her feel how aroused he was. The music seemed to quiet down as he moved closer to her, at first his lips merely grazed hers, then the blood rushed to her ears as he deepened it. After a while, the song stopped, as well as tiss iss with a final nip to her bottom lip. “Till later, my love.” She opened her eyes, and he was gone. Scanning the crowd, she couldn’t see him. She grabbed Sasha’s hand, sweating and out of breath, they moved back to their table and filled their glasses with pumpkin juice.
“Who was that?” asked Sasha.
“I have no idea, but he was a good kisser.” They chuckled. But deep down, Alex had a sneaking suspicion that it was Severus.
“Have you seen Kev at all?” asked Alex.
“No, I wonder what he’s up to.” Said Sasha glancing around the room. Alex also scanned the room for Kevin, and a certain potions master.
The phantom came and sat down across from them. He seemed to be staring at Alex. But she couldn’t be sure since no one could see his face. If it was a he at all. They chatted for a few more minutes.
“It seems you have a few admirers tonight Alex.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well that guy on the dance floor, and now the phantom. He’s been staring at you for a while. I think it might be Kevin.”
“Are you sure though? He might not even be looking at me.”
“But it seems that way, doesn’t it?”
At this point, slow songs started to play. The phantom seemed to float up from his chair and walk to Alex, extending his gloved hand. Alex hesitantly took it and allowed him to lead her onto the dance floor. Looking back at Sasha, she gave Alex a smirk. Damn Sasha, she always had a feel for these things.
The phantom delicately held her in a tight embrace. It was kind of unnerving that she couldn’t see his face. At least with the other man, she could tell where his eyes and other features of his face were. Soon though, all that mattered was the music, and the feel of him. She could feel his every breath as his chest pressed just slightly into hers. Feel the muscles in his legs move as he spun them around. He stirred deeper feelings in her that the other did not. Awoke more parts in her than she knew of. Before she knew what had happened, he had led her off the dance floor, away from the others, and into the gardens. He led her to a bench where they sat down. He grasped her hands in his. She broke the silence after several long minutes.
“Who are you?”
The Phantom rose up, went across the way and plucked a long stemmed red rose from a bush, came back, and handed it to her.
“Why won’t you speak?”
He bent down and even though she couldn’t see his face, invisible lips touched hers in a chaste kiss. He drew himself back up to his full height and swept away, back into the great hall. It took Alex a second, but she ran after him. Entering the great hall, she couldn’t see him.
“Where were you?” Sasha asked “Was that guy Kevin?”
“I don’t know, I think so, he didn’t say anything. He left me, and now I can’t find him. Do you see him anywhere?”
“No.” Said Sasha looking around.
She whipped around in time to see black cloaks fluttering out of the hall. She chased after Kevin, with Sasha yelling after her.
“Alex! Where are you going?!” But Alex was too far ahead towards her goal to stop and explain.
I know it\'s an evil place to end it. But who\'s who? any guesses? review along with your guess! I like reviews! 10 points to whoever gets it right!
