Synopsis: This story takes place after my previous story “The Lion and The Serpent”. In this story Harry and Draco are on their way back to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry when they are ambushed by Death Eaters, leaving Draco half dead. So distraught over Draco’s possible death Harry wishes he was never born . . . but will his wish actually come true?

The air was rich, almost sweet, like the smell of jasmine and roses in the breeze of the night. A familiar feeling hung in the air as well, as Harry looked around and somehow felt himself at ease for the first time since his return to Hogwarts. He stood somewhere in the center of a forest, in a large and beautiful meadow. The night sky was littered with countless stars, surrounding a large blue full moon hanging over the forest. The sight itself was breath taking, leaving Harry weeping at the beauty of night. But, before Harry could look around something suddenly pressed against its leg.

Looking down in surprise, Harry saw a beautiful baby stag with beaming blue eyes, just like his patronus. Harat dat down on the grass and petted the baby stag as it began to nibble and lick Harry face lovingly.

“Where did you come from?” Harry asked the stag as it suddenly jumped into its lap playfully, almost knocking Harry onto his back.

As if to answer his question, the stag abruptly stopped licking Harry’s face and looked just over Harry’s left shoulder. Harry turned his head and saw two full grow stags coming out of the forest. One looked exactly like his patronus, silver all over with large antlers, but the other was jet black all over, with beautifully eerie red eyes, and the fact that it had no antlers told Harry it was female. The baby jumped out of Harry’s lap and ran over to its approaching parents. Normally Harry would have been a bit on edge, knowing how animals were very protective of their young, but for some reason, as the stag drew closer Harry was not afraid.

When the stags where close enough to Harry, they began to sniff him, just like bloodhounds, as if to make sure he was safe to touch. The baby jumped on Harry once again suddenly, this time actually knocking him down on his back, and began nuzzling his face once again, only this time, the baby’s parents joined. Harry laughed aloud as they did so, tickling his face stomach. Suddenly, as the stags had him on the ground Harry heard a strange but familiar hissing noise near his feet. Harry lightly pushed the baby stag off of him and looked down at his feet. To his surprise he saw dozens of snakes moving around him, and watching him closely. For a brief moment, Harry thought of reaching for his wand but stopped, when he realized the stags were not afraid. As soon as he realized this, one of the snakes came forward and looked at Harry, as if it were a forgotten friend. It the hissed in Harry’s ear playfully, telling Harry it had been too long.

Harry had forgotten all about talking to snake, since the last time he spoke parseltongue was when he faced the basilisk. Before Harry could ask what the snake meant, Harry felt a large tongue licking the side of his face. It was coarse and rough, like sandpaper, but somehow comforting. When Harry finally saw what the tongue belong to, his heart skipped a beat. A great lion with large black mane sat behind Harry, along with a lioness of the same color. Instead of biting off his head, the lion merely looked at Harry, just like the other animals around him. Then out of nowhere, a small newborn cub climbed on top of Harry’s shoulder, and began to bite his ears. Harry laughed again like before, as the cubs biting and licking tickled Harry into relaxation.

“Is this some kind of dream where I learn that for every creature that dies another is born? Cause if it is, this is laying it on a bit thick isn’t it?” Harry declared out loud as he took the cub in his arms.

“Maybe, but they’re your symbols” said a small voice suddenly.

Harry looked around only to see a little boy beside the female stag. The boy was small; no more than 5 years old, with messy jet-black hair, and in its hand was a baby phoenix, chirping loudly. Harry was dumbfounded as he looked at this boy, feeling that something was right, and as Harry continued to look Harry saw a lightning shaped scar on the boy’s forehead.

“Who are you?” Harry finally asked as he stood up with the cub still in his hands.

“I’m little Harry; I’m the deepest manifestation of your subconscious.”

Harry looked at the small boy, obviously debating weather or not to believe what hs sas saying. The animals drew in closer, nuzzling and comforting little Harry as well.

“What is this place?” Harry asked, trying to understand what was going on.

“This is the sacred world inside of you, no one else can exist here” answered little Harry as he stroked the birds head.

Searching his feelings, Harry had no choice but to accept these answers as the truth, for as Harry looked around he couldn’t fight off the feeling that this place was home.

“So what am I doing here? What happened to the spirits?”

“They taught you everything they had to teach you and I had thringring you here” answered another voice.

Yet again, Harry turned around, only this time; it was to see the mysterious stranger from the shrieking shack standing beside him. The stranger was only about two inches taller than Harry and like before, was still wearing a mask. The mask itself was shaped like that of the phantom of the opera, leaving on the chin exposed, which showed a very well kept goatee. The mask itself was made out of silver on side and gold on the other, coming together almost like the yin and yang symbol. Harry saw that while one of the stranger’s eyes was emerald green, the left one was an electric blue, just like Moody’s. The stra was was wearing a long dragon hide trench coat with the hood over his head, and his pants and steel toed boots were made of dragon hide as well. He wore a chain male over his chest, and over that was a plate of armor. The armor was sapphire blue with a large bird symbol, obviously a phoenix, on it made of gold.

“So you the Phoenix I take it?” Harry asked as he put the cub down on the ground.

“That I am Harry.”

“Why have your brought me here? And why are you doing this?”

The stranger only smiled for a moment, as if to let Harry consider his questions.

“Don’t sound so ungrateful Harry, for I have given you a great gift. A chance to see your deepest wish.”

“Why?!?” Harry demanded.

“For you Harry, and for Draco, and all the people you care about. For you could not see the extraordinary difference you make in their lives and in this world.”

“Maybe, but I don’t see what . . .”

“You were questioning your worth, Harry, on the brink of giving up! And that would put that which you hold dear in great danger, just as you saw. Your mother sacrificed herself for you, leaving her love inside your very skin. All your family mourns for you Harry as well as with you, and if you had given up on yourself, Voldemort would have defeated you. If you had never been born, Neville would have been chosen to fight Voldemort, and all the Weasley’s would already be dead. Draco would have never reformed, and become a true ally, friend, and lover. And because Neville did not posses what you have, he would have lost to Voldemort, just as you saw. So I let you see the possible consequences of your yearnings.”

“Why? You put me throhellhell!” Harry shouted.

“Maybe this will answer your question” said the stranger as he took of his hood.

As he took off his hood, Harry saw a head filled with messy jet-black hair, exactly like his own. bef before Harry could say anything the stranger took of his mask. His face was horribly burn on the left side of his face, and his left eye was gone, replaced by a magical eye, just like Harry surmised before. Yet none of that was what disturbed Harry so much as he looked upon the strangers face. What was by far the most disturbing was the scar on the stranger’s forehead. Harry tried to speak, but his words became stuck in his throat. As if he were reading Harry’s mind the stranger pulled out something from within his coat:

“Perhaps this will help you understand a bit more” the stranger said as he opened his hand and revealed a time turner in his palm.

“But I saw you die!” Harry said to his future s

“Harry Potter did die that night, or so it seemed. When I tried to absorb more energy from Hogwarts, I let my guard down and Voldemort took the advantage. But the energy I absorbed kept me alive, but just barely. It took almost a year for me to finally recover enough strength to leave the ruins that was once Hogwarts, and when I did, Voldemort had already destroyed most of Britain. He had gained completely control and there was nothing I could do to stop him. I became the phoenix to try and hide my true identity a secret for as long as possible, while I tried to find a way to repair all that had been done. Finally, I managed to breato tto the ministry of magic, which became Voldemort’s strong hold, and stole the time turner. I brought myself back to try and stop you from doing what I did, and hopefully giving you the chance to win the war, so I called upon the spirits to show you all you have seen.”

“I still don’t understand. If you came back here to stop me from giving up then why didn’t you just save Draco!?!” Harry demanded.

“I can’t save Draco, Harry . . .”

“Can’t? Or won’t!?!” Harry spat.

“Both, Harry. Only you can save him now.”

“How?”

“Does this mean you don’t want to give up then?”

Harry thought for a moment, surprised by the question his future self had asked.

“No, I don’t want to give up!” Harry answered.

“Then you have already taken the first step to saving your future Harry. Now you must open the door to change what you want” said the stranger, gesturing to the edge of the forest, where a strange door suddenly materialized.
