People like you and me

As promised another chapter and I am thrilled you all like this story. Some explanations and the first tame kiss. I figure this is my first story where those two do not jump each other by the third chapter. I will be worth it, in the end,

12. People like you and me

The next time he woke he could at least move his arms and even if he still felt rotten, he felt considerably better than the last time he had been awake.

For some reason even without his glasses he could see everything crystal clear which was very likely a charm that Hermione had offered to show him hundreds of times.

He was not in the infirmary, of that he was sure and the room looked sterile, the only pieces of furniture his bed, the night table and a steel wardrobe on the far wall.

It did not look like a hospital room but like a.... a cell in a prison.

Of course, they had no way of knowing if Voldemort was gone and even though Harry felt nothing foreign in him any more, he was glad they took no chances. But the feeling that everybody was afraid of him felt horrible.

On the side table was a tumbler with water and a glass and to his surprise a little basket with chocolate. He could not think of any person who would send him sweets after what had happened. They were probably from Dumbledore.

Hearing steps approaching through the slightly ajar door he closed his eyes. He did not feel like company right now.

“...that is idiotic Albus.” Snape. He sounded pissed as he had always done with Harry bringing a smile to the boy's face.

“Severus, I am glad I could convince them to those terms. The poor boy does not deserve this treatment but I can understand their fear.”

“They are fools. They expect him to save their sorry asses but as soon as they are confronted with what he has to do, they show how much of a coward each and everyone is.”

“I am aware of that and I have another meeting with Kingsley later today. At the moment he appears the only one to see reason.”

At that moment the door opened and both wizard came into the room and so Harry opened his eyes.

“My boy, you are awake,” Dumbledore exclaimed honestly pleased and sat down on the edge of Harry's bed. One hand cupped his cheek and the tender touch brought new tears to Harry's eyes which caused him to close his eyes mortified.

“It is all rigt Harry,” he muttered as he pressed the boy to his chest. “Do not despair.”

After a couple of moment Harry drew away blinking the tears away. Dumbledore poured him a glass of water and obediently Harry drank. He handed the glass back when he was done and cast one glance into Snape's direction.

The potion master leaned against the wall next to the door, his face not betraying one emotion. But Harry found solace in that because it was so familiar.

“Is everybody all right?” Harry asked softly, pleased that he could talk again.

Dumbledore's blue eyes twinkled merrily as he nodded.

“Nobody was permanently harmed my boy. However you gave us quite a scare when you did not regain consciousness for so long.”

“For how long?” Harry asked.

“To be exact 23 days,” Snape evenly said from the door. “We had given up hope.”

“Severus!” Dumbledore sounded not amused but Harry saw the beginning of a smirk in Snape's face making him smile.

“That is okay Professor, I do not mind,” Harry quickly cut in. His eyes travelled to the sweets on the night table. “Are these from you?”

Dumbledore shook his head. “They are from your friends of course.”

“Do I still have friends?”

Dumbledore nodded with an encouraging smile on his face.

“They are all worried Harry about your well-being. Nobody blames you for what happened. That was magic strong enough, nobody could have resisted Riddle.”

Harry sighed. “But I played right into his hands. Professor Snape warned me that when you tap into somebody's else’s mind you are vulnerable to an attack as well.”

“I am impressed Potter, so you do actually pay attention now and then.” Snape remarked.

Harry cast him a sad smile.

“Now and then.”

“He must have taken control of your mind when you accessed Severus',” Dumbledore said pensively. “Needless to say that what he did was dark magic and I am afraid we will never fully understand how he did it.”

Harry smiled ruefully. “Maybe that is for the better.”

“That might be true.” Dumbledore gave Harry another hug and then rose from the bed.

“I have another meeting to attend Harry but Professor Snape was generous enough to volunteer for keeping your company. I will be back very soon.”

With one last encouraging smile the headmaster left closing the door after himself.

Harry sighed deeply, trying to get a little more comfortable which was not easy if you could only move your arms and you torso.

Snape gracefully sat down in his chair and rested his gaze on Harry who for some reason was uncomfortable. A while nothing was said until Harry could stand it no longer.

“So you are not afraid of me?” he asked a little bitterly.

Snape leaned back casually.

“No.”

“Very brave,” Harry muttered.

“Not really- you cannot move, you do not have your wand and if you so much as move in the wrong way I have permission to cast a stupefy on you.”

Harry pulled a face. “How long are they going to treat me this way?”

Snape folded one leg over the other as he contemplated that.

“They are expecting a Death Eater attack every day so I would assume they rather have you at their side when that happens.”

Nodding glumly Harry stared at the far away wall for a long while wondering why Snape had volunteered to keep him company.

“Why are you here?” Harry finally asked his attention back on Snape.

The potion master shrugged. “Since my cover was blown I am of no real use for the order.”

“Bullshit.”

Snape looked from the floor. “I bed you pardon?”

“I said bullshit. They are going to need people like you when the war starts.”

“People like me?”

Harry flopped into the bed.

“People like you and me. Who do the dirty work and then quietly ruin the rest of their days.”

“So you consider you and me alike?”

Harry nodded after a short moment of consideration.

“I guess so. After all my magic seems to be drawn to yours, so it kinda makes sense.”

“So before he took control over your body you managed to press Ms Granger for the required information.”

Harry nodded mutely not sure if he wanted their talk to stray into that direction. But they would have to talk about that sooner or later.

“It happened to Godric Gryffindor before the goblin war,” Harry stated citing Hermione's words. “With Salazar Slytherin.”

“I am aware of that.”

Harry closed his eyes again fidgeting a little because he though he felt a tickle on his skin some place on his left leg.

“I never had a chance to ask Hermione what eventually happens when one wizard is drawn to another.”

Snape's face showed a strange mixture of amusement and curiosity.

“In the end? Nothing really happens when both resist the pull but if they want to merge their magical signatures, this normally happens with penetration.”

“I thought so. So I have to shag you soon for us to win the war which will be great for everybody else but what is in it for me?”

“In it for you?”

“Yeah. Look, if I have to fight against that monster I want to have something waiting for me on the other end of the bridge.”

They were silent for so long that Harry figured Snape would not answer at all.

But when he held Harry's gaze with his black eyes a shudder went through the younger wizard's body but this time Harry was certain it was anticipation. Slowly Snape rose from his chair and like Dumbledore had done before he sat down on the edge of the bed.

Reaching out his fingers he lifted Harry's chin up and then his raw lips touched Harry's, lingering there, the contact not unpleasant at all. There were subtle differences with kissing a guy, but he found he rather liked it. Wondering if Snape would intensify the kiss he felt the potion master pull away.

There was a smug expression on Snape's face but this time it was laced with amusement and something that took his breath away for a second.

“That can be waiting for you on the other side of that bridge you mentioned.”
