Evasion
Chapter Eleven - Evasion
"Luna! Where are we going?!" Implored Harry as he half ran to keep up.
Ahead of him Luna was making long, fast strides down the quiet, paved corridor between the layers of tall buildings. The rain, it seemed, had only abated for a short while as the drizzle falling around the two teens began to pick up again. The few passers by left by the rain watched them pass incuriously from under large umbrellas. Panting, Harry caught up with Luna and finally managed to match her pace.
"Where are going?" He asked again.
In answer, Luna jerked her head towards a street that opened to his right. Glancing to his side, Harry saw several men emerge from the street. They looked ordinary enough, but Harry realised there were marked differences between these men and actual muggles. For one thing actual muggles didn’t move in groups that all hand their hand in their pockets or jackets.
Immediately, Harry dropped back a few feet from Luna and raised his voice a little.
"Awww come on Sarah!" He whined in a desperate voice that he hoped didn’t sound like his own. "We’ve been together for what - like, six months now!"
Turning her head round away from the men so that they wouldn’t see it, Luna worked her face into a sneer.
"And that’s all you’ve bloody well cared about Derek! Jesus if you wanted to shag someone, then go get yourself a fucking whore!" Her deeper than normal voice snarled in a strong jordy accent.
"But I thought you liked me!"
The men, who had at first glared suspiciously at the two teens, lost interest in them and began to head quickly towards the cafe as the Harry and Luna continued to whine and snap in the opposite direction.
At the end of the street, Harry chanced looking round and seeing that the men had gone, dropped the act and regained his pace at Luna's side.
"Who do you think they were?" He asked, the answer already in his mind.
"Somebody who was looking for us," Luna confirmed. "Did you see how they where all holding their wands out of sight?"
"Yeah," Harry replied "But somehow I don’t think they would have had any trouble drawing them."
They walked on in silence for a few minutes, eventually coming to a busy area with more shops crammed into both sides.
"So where are we going?" He asked again.
"That’s three times you’ve asked me."
"You nether answered."
"Well to be honest, nowhere." Luna shrugged.
"So you don’t know? Good acting by the way."
Luna smiled, "Thanks, you were pretty good too."
Nearby, Harry spotted a bench that was free and taking hold of Luna's hand for a moment, pulled her towards it. Heavily, they sat down. Harry tilted his head back, his eyes closed. He tried to think about everything that had happened in the last hour but his mind couldn’t seem to fit it all into space. Instead, the "incident" (as he chose to think of it) on the beach seemed as far off as yesterday. He opened his eyes and reached down, pulling the Resurrection Stone out of his pocket. Reaching inside his jacket, Harry pictured a small metal holder and chain before conjuring the objects out of the tip of his concealed wand.
Looking over at the small tinkling noise, Luna's eyes narrowed.
"Get your hand off your wand!" She hissed, "Someone will twig!"
"Alright!" Said Harry hurriedly as he pulled the two small objects out from under his jacket.
He threaded the metal holder onto the chain. Watching curiously, Luna took hold of the holder so that Harry could fit the stone into it.
"What was that thing you did in the cafe?" She asked.
"Dunno," Said Harry "Never done it before, though. I think its something to do with when that bit of Riddle went into me."
Luna nodded.
"I feel like I’ve been...changing for the last few days. These last three days in a row I’ve woke up feeling like a slightly different person; I don’t think that- that thing where I knocked all those people out was actually my... thing."
He paused, wondering how to continue.
"So you think that this merging thing you did with the bit of You-Know-Who's soul has given you some of his powers?" Luna finished.
Harry blinked.
"Um, yeah, I know it sounds a bit far fetched. He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly.
"No, it dosen’t." Said Luna shaking her head, "For one thing, it would explain how You-Know-Who can fly, and for another, wizards being born with such abilities isn’t unheard of."
Something in Harry’s head clicked.
"They can move objects without touching them, they can command animals without training them, they can get inside other peoples heads or make them feel pain." Harry recited the words that Dumbledore had shown Tom Riddle in his memories.
Again Luna nodded.
"These wizards and witches are very rare, about ten times more than the metamorphmagi, but their type of wizard has indeed been proven to exist."
"Do they have a name?" Asked Harry fascinated. Around them the rain was beginning to thicken again.
"It was actually Dumbledore who named them," Luna's eyes were far away. "He called them the Telemagi."
He sat, digesting this. "So," He said after a few moments, "If a metamorphmagi can change their appearance then a telemagi can-"
"Can use the abilities of telepathy and telekinesis with instinctive ease and inborn mental strength." She finished.
"Damn..." Harry shook his head, laughing incredulously.
Luna's smile finically reached her eyes and she took the Stone, chain and holder from where they lay forgotten in the other teen’s slack grip. Squinting at the holder, she took the Stone between her finger and thumb and, with a small scraping clack, slotted it neatly into the holders grasp.
"There." She said, handing it back to Harry.
"Thanks." He replied as he ducked his head into the chain and hung the stone around his neck. "I don’t think we should stay here, by the way, there’s probably a search heading up towards us right now."
Nervously Luna looked up and down the street as if expecting a group of aurors approaching at that very moment. In front of them, a flock of pigeons rose into the air as a small child charged through them, squealing loudly. Harry took her hand comfortingly.
"Come on," He said "Let’s not stay in London."
Luna looked relieved as they started to walk towards an alleyway that looked likely to offer concealment.
"Do you have somewhere in mind?" She asked.
"There’s this village somewhere called Little Hangleton." Said Harry, an odd anticipation that for once was his own bubbling in his stomach.
"Got a big empty house near it and if I’m not mistaken, a small empty house in the grounds, nobody wants to go there much, the family who used to live there got murdered."
"Sounds interesting." Said Luna, perking up "How do you know about it anyway?"
Harry shrugged "Someone mentioned it to me." He answered evasively.
Luna raised an eyebrow but said nothing as they reached the middle of the alley. Harry tightened his grip on her hand.
Together they twisted into the darkness.
