what happened after Secret Lovers…read on.

This time, This place

Misused, Mistakes

Too long, Too late

Who was I to make you wait Just one chance

Just one breath

Just in case there\'s just one left

\'Cause you know,

you know, you know

Lucius Malfoy stepped out of the courtroom with one last look over his shoulder at the woman who had been his wife for over half of his life. She sat beside Draco at a small table with a sad little smile on her face. It was over. He was free. It had taken longer than he expected to sort out the divorce. Dividing and dissolving a life built over a quarter of a century wasn’t easy. But now it was done.

He did feel a certain amount of guilt for hurting Narcissa, for hurting Draco, but he just couldn’t walk away from her, not when every beat of his heart was for her. His decision had not come easy. Divorce was not something commonly done in the wizarding community, especially in pureblood marriages. He had to decide if he could handle the publicity, the stigma that would come with his choices.

Truthfully, had Narcissa not told him that she knew of his affair he would probably never have taken the steps to walk away from the lie that his life had become. He recalled that night so vividly, coming back to the room he shared with his cold, unfeeling bride after spending stolen moments in the arms of his love.

”We need to talk.” Her icy voice said into the darkness.

“About what?” Lucius asked.

“About the fact that you are in love with our son’s wife.” She whispered. Lucius closed his eyes, waiting for the sense of dread to wash over him but it never came. He only felt the relief of the lie crumbling and its weight lifting from his shoulders.

“You know.” He said.

“I do, and so does our son.” She said. Immediately he wondered if Hermione were going through the same thing at that moment, and if she were alright. “How long?”

“A year or so.” He sat up, his arms resting on his knees as he felt the bed shift beside him as she sat back against the headboard. “How did you find out?”

“Oh, Luc. I have known you so very long; I know every one of your expressions.” Narcissa said quietly. “You never looked at me the way you look at her.”

“Why aren’t you angry, Cissa?” He asked, turning his head so that he could look at her. She was beautiful, always had been, but she had never loved him. Their marriage was a contract, an arrangement made by their parents to join two wealthy pureblood families.

“I don’t know. I should be, what the two of you have been doing is so wrong…but I just can’t find the anger.” She said. “I’m hurt, frightened, but not angry.”

“What would you have me do?” He asked.

“Will you answer my questions?”

“Yes. I owe you that much I think.”

“Is it because she is so young? Is it about the…sex?” Narcissa whispered the last word as though saying something dirty and he nearly laughed.

“No. It has nothing to do with age, sex or any of the other trivial things that people might expect. I don’t know how to explain it…when I am with her my world is right.” He shrugged helplessly.

“Will you give her up?” Narcissa asked. Lucius looked at her, knowing that his answer would decide his future.

“No, Cissa. I can’t give her up, I’m sorry.”

That I love you

I have loved you all along

And I miss you

Been far away for far too long

I keep dreaming you\'ll be with me

and you\'ll never go

Stop breathing if

I don\'t see you anymore

Hermione sat alone in the small coffee house in Diagon Alley. She clutched her mug in both her hands and stared out the window. So much had happened in the last six months, her whole life had changed. She was a divorcee, albeit a wealthy one thanks to Draco bestowing a healthy sum on her in the decree, but a divorced woman in the wizarding world may as well have a scarlet letter pinned to her bodice for all the respect she received.

But she wouldn’t regret it, she couldn’t. She was free. She still couldn’t quite believe it. How had her life come to such a difficult place? Not that her life had been easy up to that point. She closed her eyes and let her mind drift back to that fateful night.

”I don’t know why you bother coming back to bed at all.” Draco said from his side of the bed. She looked over to see him rolled onto his side and propped up on one elbow staring at her.

“I am sorry if I woke you.” She said.

“You smell of him you know. When you come back to bed I can smell him on you. You are in love with my father, aren’t you?”

She gasped, her heart pounding as she felt her world tilt on his axis. Tears filled her eyes as she stared at the man she was married to. He hadn’t been a bad husband, he never mistreated her, never beat or ridiculed her. For a short time he had actually been rather tender, a passionate lover and sometimes she thought maybe they could be friends, maybe even love one another even if it wasn’t the stuff of fairytales. But it never happened, the passion fizzled and the friendship never blossomed. They settled into an odd sort of companionship, going through the motions but never feeling anything other than numb.

“Don’t try to deny it. I see the way you look at each other. So does Mother.” He said as he reached for his robe and left their bed to come stand in front of her, leaning against the window frame.

“You’ve discussed it?” She asked hoarsely, staring up at him through her tears.

“Was it so horrible being married to me?” He asked. She sobbed and shook her head.

“No. For awhile I thought I could love you. For awhile it was good between us, Draco. Then…it was like someone blew out a candle, it faded that quickly.” She said.

“I just couldn’t handle the fact that I had no choice, that the ministry had made me take a wife not of my choosing. I guess I held it against you.” He said as he turned to look out the window. “What do you want to do, Hermione?”

“I don’t know.” She sobbed, tears falling into her lap.

“We could go away together, see if we can find the spark that we had once upon a time. But you would have to promise me that whatever is going on between you and my father is over.” He said. “Can you do that, Hermione? Can you walk away from him for good?”

“No. I can’t, Draco.” She cried. “I’m so sorry.”

She shook her head as a single tear rolled down her cheek. She wiped it away with her fingertips and glanced down at her watch. It was almost time.

One my knees, I\'ll ask

Last chance for one last dance

\'Cause with you, I\'d withstand

All of hell to hold your hand

I\'d give it all

I\'d give for us

Give anything but I won\'t give up

\'Cause you know,

you know, you know

Lucius stood on the back veranda of his ancestral home and stared out over the lake as the sun sank lower in the sky. He breathed deeply of the fresh air and pictured her face as he thought of the last time he had seen her staring at him from across the breakfast table the morning after their lie had come out.

She looked pale, her cheeks streaked with tears as they began to discuss what would happen next. Draco and Narcissa were willing to agree to dissolution of the marriages, providing that Hermione and Lucius agreed not to see one another until the divorces were final in order to circumvent the gossip.

No one believed that they would come away unscathed by the press, as soon as it became public knowledge that divorce was pending the papers were filled with speculation. They had agreed reluctantly, but were willing to do anything for the chance to be together without the lies.

Hermione and Draco had settled their divorce within a few short months. They owned no property together and had no children and only a few assets to divide.

Lucius and Narcissa’s had taken almost a year. But that very afternoon the papers were signed, it was over, finally.

He had come into his home, half empty of all its things with no one around but the elves who were making themselves scarce. A clean slate, a new life, a second chance to be happy were his for the taking. He waited, though not very patiently for the clock to chime. He had sent her an owl that morning, his first bit of contact with her since the morning they parted with a kiss flavored by tears.

My Dearest Love,

It is done, finally we are both free of the past. My heart is still yours and has been all along. If your heart has remained true to mine you can find me by the lake at 8 o’clock. I will wait for you.

All of my love,

Lucius

He withdrew his pocket watch and observed the second hand as it moved with agonizing slowness that last little bit to shove the minute hand forward to 8 o’clock.

“I’m not late am I?” Lucius closed his eyes and a relieved sigh escaped his lips. He tucked the watch back into his pocket and turned to look at her.

“No, my love, you are right on time.”

That I love you

And I miss you

Been far away for far too long

I don\'t see you anymore

So far away

Been far away for far too long

So far away

Been far away for far too long

But you know, you know, you know

Hermione was across the veranda and in his arms in a blur. Lips met, parted and met again in a frenzy of need. It had been so long, too long. Lucius pulled back and looked down into her face, his hands sliding over her as he took in the sight of her after so long.

“I was beginning to think I would never see you again.” He said as his fingers came up to brush over her lips. “I was afraid that after so long your feelings would have changed, that you would have decided it was more trouble than it was worth to wait.”

“Never. I love you, Lucius. I have never said those words to another and I never will.” She said, her hands coming up to cradle his face. “Is it real? Are we really free to be together?”

“From today on it is just us, always.” He turned his face into her hand and placed a kiss against her palm. “I will never be parted from you again, my love. I promise you.”

“I love you, Lucius.” Her eyes were filling quickly, the tears spilling over.

“No more tears, there is no need for them now.” He said, wiping them away. “I missed you.”

He lifted her into his arms, cradling her against his chest as he carried her back into the house and up the stairs towards the master suite.

“The house is empty.” She said, looking around at the nearly bare house that once upon a time had been filled with priceless antiques.

“A clean slate for us to start our life together with no memories interfering.” He said, the double doors opening as he approached. “I took the liberty of having this room redone already.” He said as he carried her inside and laid her in the center of an obscenely large sleigh bed.

“Do you mind if I look later?” She asked breathlessly as she tugged him down to her. “Right now I need to feel you against me.”

He moaned softly when their lips met, passion overtaking them quickly as they became reacquainted with the taste of each other. Clothing came away piece by piece until there was nothing between them but a fine sheen of sweat as two pieces of a puzzle came together, a perfect fit. They couldn’t stop kissing as they moved together, every inch of their bodies touching. Moans were muffled as slick bodies rocked towards passion’s crest, their shouts of completion swallowed by the other.

“I love you, so much I can barely breathe without you.” She said, her arms wrapped tightly around his chest as she held him against her, refusing to let him pull away.

“Then hold on to me, don’t ever let me go.”

I wanted

I wanted you to stay

\'Cause I needed

I need to hear you say

That I love you

I have loved you all along

And I forgive you

For being away for far too long

So keep breathing

\'Cause I\'m not leaving you anymore

Believing,

Hold on to me and, never let me go
